Hydro Thunder Hurricane Review (360)

It has been 11 years since Hydro Thunder graced us with its presence. Now with HT Hurricane available on XBLA, the speedboats are ready to make their dramatic return to stardom…err…mediocrity. Yup, I said it. The once proud title of Hydro Thunder has fallen into mediocrity (not to mention repetitiveness) and possibly even further. If you want to do the same thing over and over again, flail your boat across the screen and explode on random barrels of TNT then this game is for you.

Tough crowd! I had a lot of fun with this one. It's just good old-school fun, especially in local or online multiplayer.

I agree that the Gauntlet mode and Challenge mode are basically just artificial ways to extend the game length.

But I liked the ring mode because it showed you some new shortcuts that you wouldn't have found on your own.

The depth of this game has always been finding all the shortcuts (there are tons!) and figuring out which route will net you the best time.

And the steering does suck for the novice boats, but once you unlock pro boats like the Thrasher, steering is no longer an issue.

I would've given it about a 7 overall.

Agreed. As part of the summer of arcade, it was not a bad deal. I think it is fun little arcade title. If this was trying to pass for a $60, I think the review would make more sense. But i found it to look great, feel great, and easily provide some fun from time to time.

Dont know what game this guy was reviewing, but this is a fun, great looking game with a lot of strategy involved knowing the courses and avoiding problem areas, and drafting off rivals. One of the better, fun racing experiences I have had, and for the price, it's a no-brainer! Handling is great too, not too easy and not too hard. Love the look of the water and its physics.

Yeah Wave Race 64 is the only water racer I'd rank above Hydro Thunder.

Then again, you can't play 4-player splitscreen or 8-player online in Wave Race 64 like you can in Hydro Thunder.

So Wave Race 64 for single-player, Hydro Thunder for multiplayer!

They put out a $5 DLC pack and it is actually pretty good. I've played the bonus tracks and boats on a friend's xbox and they are all real nice.

But I'm a cheapskate and have been waiting for a DLC sale.

If you wait long enough, just about everything on XBLA goes on sale eventually.
