Apparently you aren't aware of the thing called peripheral vision and how it works...

You also don't really seem interested in the truth, only in defending your stance...

I have no vested interest in the outcome, and am only interested in the truth. For your sake I will try to explain it better:

The position of the meter as it is shown, on the field of action below the player, will only serve as a distraction... An unnecessary step in the cognitive process...

It will go:

recognize pass opportunity
press button
watch meter fill to desired amount
release button

With the meter off or in the periphery it would go:

recognize pass opportunity
press button to desired amount
release button

The latter gives you a much better sense or realism. There would be no need to look at the meter directly, only to "sense" it with your peripheral vision. Once you got a feel for it you could turn it off all together. Or you could even leave it on without having it disrupt the impression of playing a real life soccer game, because after all these meters don't exist in real life. I know I didn't see any when I watched the recent World Cup.

If there is concern of a meter in the corner blocking any action that could easily be solved by adjusting the camera to compensate for that.

Visual perception and visual design is my trade by the way, so I'm not speaking out of personal opinion, or saying that I don't like the passing meter. It is bad design... There's really no way of getting around it. Design has function, and in function there is truth... As opposed to say art, in which there is more freedom of expression, and thus opinion.

Since you are such a smart guy, I assume you know the meaning of the word "condescending".

I get it, you don't like it....either turn it off or don't buy it.

I'm gonna have to go with spit on this one. I'd rather have it at the very bottom. You can see it in your peripherals, and still be able to keep your eyes on the action, without all the clutter that's gonna be all over the screen.

They should have 3 options though - Above the player/ At the bottom / removed completely.

I agree with you. I will try to play with this removed and then go from there.

In short, it uh... How shall I say it... Breaks the flow.

If you're going to put it anywhere put it on the bottom of the screen, so it can be seen using peripheral vision, and still give you the feel that you are playing soccer.
Part of what makes footy games so easy for a lot of us is due to the fact that most of us play on tele or slightly zoomed in tele-like cameras. On these angles you can see nearly every player on the pitch making it easier to pass, shoot, maneuver, etc... For this angle I agree with Bahnzo. Putting it underneath the player allows me to not take my eye off the player with the ball and still use my peripheral vision to find teammates, etc...

If you want to really get the feeling like you're playing you have to use the 1st person view IMO (can't remember what it's called in PES, in FIFA it's Be a Pro view). This view is usually so zoomed-in that you'd have to put the meter at the bottom of the screen since you can't see your legs for a lot of the action.

The 2nd part only applies to the meter being off. With it in the periphery, you're still using some of your vision to watch the meter fill.

I think the whole idea of showing meters in all sports games is to get users to a point where they don't have to rely on them. Once you have the controls down with a certain team you just play by feel.
