Yeah it really changes how you call a defense on short yardage downs because you have to blitz A gap if you don't want to rely on a dice roll block shed by your interior linemen. The players don't adjust actions to down and distance.
I'm guessing in real life if a team called a base D on a 3rd and short, the LB's would still be gearing to fire their gap against the run even if they have a zone responsibility against the pass. Then again, that'd be the game working for the user and maybe that's not desired.
