The Ultimate Baseball Game

As gamers we like to bemoan that fact that our choices in games are consistently dwindling, and for good reason. I would like to see more than one NFL title each year. College hoops fans are now completely out of luck. We have lost the wide range of quality arcade titles, like NHL Hitz or NBA Street. Essentially, your favorite sport now has one, maybe two, significant options each year to play.

Baseball is not really an exception. I say "not really" because our sim-style choices have consistently been two: MLB: The Show or MLB 2K. But dig a bit deeper, and baseball, more than most sports, has recently offered a wider range of choices for fans. Games like MLB Power Pros, The Bigs and even Out of the Park Baseball offer more options for baseball gameplay than those that exist in the football and basketball genres (probably combined).

What if, though, these choices start to dry up as well? Well, here is what I would want to keep from these games if given only one option -- one "ultimate game" if you will.

One thing I would love to see added is customizable camera angles. I'd love to somehow replicate Star League Baseball's sideways camera (not sure if I'd like it anymore but I would like to try). I'd love to see a camera that would zoom out enough for me to actually track flyballs rather than just follow shadows or cursors.

For my dream MLB game, I'd take everything from The Show and allow unlockables to transform the gameplay into The Bigs (moonshot homers, ridiculous defensive plays, power meters, super powers, etc.), and each of those elements could be turned on or off. I could play that one game forever.

I too would love to see more of a storyline added to RTTS, or at least some more cut scenes involving the player during some pivotal moments in his career. It'd help keep it moving.

Nice post.

Re: The Ultimate Baseball Game

Dang Nem, make us a game. That's a good list.

I'd like to see more atmosphere with fan shouts/cheers/music and the ability to really assign just about every atmospheric sound to just about everything. I actually enjoy the game without announcing and would love it to be even more involved.

No more three man booths, there's no reason to have a three man booth.

For me...allow everything to be edited.
EVERYTHING.
...and allow custom leagues and league structure.

That's all.

Nemesis, great list.

I kept mine to next gen, just to keep it simple; but I dig the love you give to the MVP series. After The Show, it's my favorite baseball franchise. That game just played so well.
