Again, the physics looks great, but as a game, it looks very very incomplete.
That I will agree with. The stands do look nice, but you are right, there is v ery little atmosphere. I mean, at leas APF had The Beast..lol That's something that could eventually hurt the game.

If there's no style or substance to the presentation and atmosphere, it will indeed be an experience in seeing how this new engine works and then limited to that.

That video looked great!!!

Going to pre-order very soon. Love the organic right stick movements. Might be the only football game I will ever need, if the customization is really on point.

A few of these complaints have already been addressed. We've already got confirmation that weather effects will be handled via engine, other demos have shown a clear pocket developing.

Yes, DB AI is a minor concern at this point. That being said, after over a decade of Maddens DB's instantly knowing where to go after the ball is thrown, having a few people out of position would be a lot more interesting and realistic. The question that sould be asked, as if bad routes are the exception, or the rule.

Everything the demo showed is that the engine is about where I expected it, and as I said from day 1, the AI will make or break the game. I see some good, some bad, but until we get actual gameplay videos, we don't have much to go on. And I'm sure the devs are listing to the reaction, and will address the largest concerns.

How any fan of video game football could not be anything but impressed with this game simply confuses me. This game is going to do things no other football game has done, and from what I saw and heard in that clip , it will do them well. Can't wait to give it a try on launch day.

I'm with you. I'd be satisfied with some more info, some actual gameplay (human on human or human VS AI), or a playable demo.

Re: Backbreaker Developer Diary Video #1 (Gamespot)

I too am extremely excited, but there are some frightening concerns I have with this game. I want them to succeed. I have already pointed out some positives in my prior post (link at the end of this post below). But the game can only get better if there are people constructively critiquing the game from an unbiased stance in combination with developers taking those critiques into account and acting on them.

I have seen some negatives that should be addressed. I’ll point them out as I go along in a later post(s). A quick one that unfortunately has some resemblance to “EAMadden” – Defensive back (DB)/corner back (CB) understands the route better than the offense. Fundamentally, this is not something that I would dismiss lightly.

Look at both player’s helmet head-tracking the football. This is an offensive pass play to a tight end receiver.
  • Corner Back: CB#20 makes the cut on the ball first to make an interception.
  • Tight End: TE#89 soon after will follow with his cut to attempt to make a catch.
  • Game play footage in trailer is seen at @2:52 ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dV4XPCFJVQ )
  • Gameplay footage reveals #20 has no hesitation or hick-up in his foot route. It's a seamless transition as if #20 was expecting the ball. #89 was also expecting the ball to be thrown in the direction.
  • Note: I wanted to see the good in this one particular play, but I can’t. I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt. Initially, I wanted to believe #20 was a running back to the flat. But, then you’ll have to figure out why #89 decided to “headtrack” to attempt to catch the football a split second after #20 headtracks the football for a catch (e.g. interception? vs. completion?). Even though #20 looks to be going up field after the catch, I am not sure if it’s meant to be an interception or completion. I believe #89 is the intended receiver. If #89 was a defender, the question becomes why would he have attempted to make a catch at the last minute after the CB#20 made the interception.

For the second dev installment, I would prefer not to see any more tackles or receptions. They already look solid as can be. I also don’t want to see any offensive schemes (e.g. throwing or running with the ball) either. I would like to see defensive schemes in their second installment. I want to see some footage of: (1) WR vs CB interaction (2) OL vs DL interaction, etc.

There is one major concern that I have, and I believe it could fix some issues, and I will post it later. It is something we/I have not seen in any backbreaker footage yet.

My previous post(s) in this thread: Positive light on backbreaker.
