So essentially buying the Combine would allow me to:

a.) Try the game out earlier than the official demo.
b.) Build up my player giving myself "extra" points by doing drills and the 5 on 5.
c.) Upload my player to the servers for some sort of draft. (Not to sure I understand this one or if I read it wrong)

If I am missing anything feel free to add it in. Hopefully, when they talk about the My Player mode somethings are cleared up.
