Re: Madden 10 Trailer impressions

I'm pleased with what I saw. The Depth of Field effects were so natural and subtle I didn't really notice them until my second viewing. (That's a GOOD THING!)

I really got a feel for the combat. The OL/DL interaction looked pretty cool and the little touches of jostling I noticed were great. That kind of stuff will go a long way once I've got the disc booted up with a controller in my sweaty hands.

If I could offer two critiques on the unfinished product -

1. The Ref's "First Down" Animation: I'm thrilled to have officials in the game, but his arm movements didn't look too hot. Bluntly, the animation wasn't very good. It looks like his arm is being 'pushed' forward to signal First Down. I'd like to see the Madden official really snap and pop those arms when making calls...like Ed Hochuli and Mike Carey. The less robotic they look and move, the more I'll yell at them for their calls.

2. Post Effects: While the Depth of Field is a WELCOME addition to my beloved football game - I'd love to see more post effects on top of the gameplay. I'm not sure if that falls outside the philosophy of the design team - but this early preview of Madden 10 looked a little too clean. I'd love MORE texture and atmostphere in the image. (Look at Ian's FIFA 09 video - see that slight haze? That's a touch of what I want!) Can't wait to see the weather effects.

I've seen Madden 10 in motion and I'm pleased. Even though I've got a Madden on my shelf right here - I want to play the new one. Another good thing. Looking sharp so far, fellas.

Boy you going to break your back if you really think there done with improving this game.

O well guess you will miss out on the biggest comeback ever, Ian and co are almost better then Kobe in the clutch, I trust them and will let them take the last shot of every close game.

NO SELL!!!!!!!
Lol @ the biblical analogy.

The good: gang tackling, some better DB animations, evidence of OL/DL interaction.

The bad: no evidence that the 1-1 OL/DL stuff takes place within the context of a dynamic and lifelike pocket--the other four guys would have been interesting to see in that shot; I saw some HUGE gaps between WR and DB in man coverage, way bigger than you see normally in the NFL.

The ugly: the running and player movement is still stiff as hell. It's just ugly, and it's a shame that they all move like hulks or robots. It's something about the way the limbs and torso move together that just isn't right. And every player movement from WR/RB strides to QB throws makes it stick out.

It's too early to say "no sell" for me, but them's my thoughts.

EA has you all in the palm of their hand. WAKE UP people, the problems will never be fixed. They show you one trailer and your all ready to let them off the hook for the last 6 years of next gen madden? get real!!
