Re: OS Roundtable: Pugilist Edition

The sport of boxing is not boring and the fights aren't junk. A good fight is as exciting and dramatic as any other major sporting event. I've seen at least a dozen fights on HBO and Showtime in the last year that were more exciting that, for example, last night's NBA game. But you'll only feel that way if you follow boxing, which few people do these days, that's a shame. I don't expect the average gamer to care about a sim boxing game (if they play a sim sports game it's only for sports covered by Sportscenter), but I do expect a little more from "sports gamers", especially when Tyson is in an EA game.

For many reasons (no good american hevyweights, no organized league, lack of coverage, boring tactical fighters, young kids not wanting to take up the sport for its brutal nature, etc) boxing is simply not that popular, and it takes a true fan to really appreciate it as a sport these days. However, UFC, despite some of these same problems, seems to be growing (despite a much lower skill level than championship boxing). On paper, FN4 will be the greatest boxing game to come out since Punch Out, and the best simulation of the sport ever made. But apparently gamers, even sports gamers, prefer the arcady feel of a Punch Out to a Madden of boxing, and that's because there's a huge gap between the following that boxing has compared to somehting like the NFL.

that's why i'm looking forward to facebreaker.

to me the average sports fan would rather have a Rocky-like boxing experience over mimicking the junk we see on HBO nowadays.
Wow!, are you a true boxing fan? In a game you could avoid the garbage like hugging and not throwing punches. It's what you do that makes the fight.

I was with you until that remark. How could you say UFC the most talented league of MMA has less skill than championship boxing. I won't go as far as to say it has more, but it has to be at least dead even. You have to train and be proficient at multiple styles in order to compete in MMA let alone be upper echlon. You must also know how ot defend against multiple styles, and dictate the fight to be the style you want. you have to guard punches, kicks, knees, elbows, takedowns, submissions. the fact that you have to take all of that into consideration puts it #1 in combat sports as far as skill required is concerned. I love boxing, but boxing is just 1 part of MMA.

And I don't think Prizefighter is getting the respect it deserves (not saying it's a great game, but it's not bad from what I've played so far).
How precious-it's a Maddenite displaying his unconditional love.

Im sorry but i can give 2 craps about facebreaker. I want Boxers Road 2 for the psp translated to english with minor tweaks and Next Gen Graphics.

Boxing is the sweet science, and its pugilistic chess. You guys aren't boxing fans then. If im looking forward to NBA Jam over the new Live or 2k9. then im just not into basketball that much. Leave the boxing discussions to the actuall fans.

Note to self: don't say anything bad about UFC around ManiacMatt.

I got to agree with you there, that was the most lame thing I've read while being a member of OS.
