Tomas Kopecky gives up Silver Medal

Slovakia won the silver medal at the World Championships recently. Most players take the medal home, and add it to a list of accomplishments. Kopecky had a different idea

That's Tomas Kopecky putting his silver medal on a fallen countryman's grave, not just anyone though, Pavol Demitra. Often times sports stars transcend to a plane of popularity in their own countries higher than those more deserving. But Demitra meant more to Slovakia, and its national hockey team than most. Demitra was the kind of guy who helped his country out fiscally, before himself. He was a hero to many and a friend to all. And what a gesture by Kopecky.

That's a touching gesture by Kopecky. I have a lot of respect for him after doing that.

Re: Tomas Kopecky gives up Silver Medal

The best game I attended at the 2010 Olympics was Slovakia's 2-1 shootout win over Russia. Demitra was the best player on the ice that night, and dynamite for the whole tournament (he nearly gave me a heart attack by almost scoring the tying goal against Luongo in the dying seconds of the CAN/SVK semifinal). I took this shot of Demitra scoring the game-winning 7th round shootout goal against Bryz.

That plane crash is one of the worst sports tragedies I've ever known. It makes me sick knowing these thrilling players are no longer with us.
