Sayers preaching the truth. Urlacher getting his panties in a bunch.

You all see this story that has become completely blown out of proportion? (Thanks largely to the hype-meisters at ESPN)

My take as a Bears fan? Shut up, Urlacher and worry about actually finishing above .500.

I'm on the side of Urlacher on this one! Sayers came at him strong. Sayers started this whole thing first.

I mean I have never seen Jim Brown bash the Clevekand Browns or Joe Namath bash the Jets or Roger Staubach bash the Cowboys.

I mean Sayers went off on Jay Cutler, Lovie Smith and Urlacher. I mean c'mon!!

Riiiiiiight....One of the greatest RBs of all time who'd be even MORE recognized for his achievements today if his knees wasn't ripped to shreds doesn't know what it takes. That right there shows how little you understand yourself.

Anyways here's the timeline of what caused this story in the first place from the NYT NFL blog:

Quote:
Gales Sayers, speaking at a booster banquet May 4 for Boys Town in Omaha, his hometown:

“Cutler hasn’t done the job. Urlacher, I don’t know how good he’s going to be coming back [from surgery]. He’s 33 years old (Note: Urlacher is actually 32). They need a couple wide receivers, a couple defensive backs. They haven’t done a good job.

If Lovie [Smith] doesn’t do it this year, I think he’s gone. He had a good team the Super Bowl year. Nothing came together for him the last couple years.”

Brian Urlacher’s response, through The Chicago Tribune:

“Let me ask you a question: ‘How many championships did Gale Sayers win? How many playoff games did he win when he played? None. None. None.

Does it bother me? There are enough people throwing daggers at us right now. Why does one of our ex-players have to jump in? There are enough experts talking [expletive] about us, so why does a Bear, an all-time great, have to jump in? I just don’t like that.”

… Does [Sayers] know how to win football games? Does he? No. How are you going to criticize someone else when you haven’t done it yourself?

He’s one of our own, so that’s why it’s so frustrating.”

Gale Sayers’s response (through The Chicago Tribune):

“When I am asked a question, I have to answer it. I don’t want anybody to think I am afraid to talk about the Bears. … Right now, the Bears are hurting. …

And Urlacher, how old is he anyway? He should know that himself, that he is on the downside of his career.

If somebody asks me, ‘How do you think the Bears are going to do this year?’ If I say, ‘Oh, they are going to win 14 ballgames,’ they know the Bears can’t win 14 ballgames. Why should I lie to the people? … Football people understand that.”

Dick Butkus, to The Chicago Tribune, when told about Urlacher’s remarks:

“It’s a real reach to say: ‘What did Gale do?’ Urlacher wasn’t even born yet, what does he know? I say things to other people, too, about the Bears. It’s total frustration. You think [Sayers] is saying it because he hates the Bears? You get so tired of sitting there watching them.”
I look at that and say that Urlacher got way too sensitive over it. I mean what's Sayers supposed to do? Be all smiley faced and say the Bears will be great? The man didn't outright criticized the team he just told the truth. C'mon if you're a Bears fan are you going to deny what he said?

What did Sayers say that was wrong? He was on the money on every point.

Urlacher talks to much for being a mediocre player. Dude gets by simply on rep.

I don't blame him for being sensative. I mean if you play football and somebody says that they have doubts about you ever being effective again,...then of course you are going to be sensative about it.

Why? If you want to prove them wrong do it on the field. You don't run your mouth to an icon of the Bears and the game itself.

Urlacher talks too much... If he were half as good as he thought he was he'd be a nice player.

You want to shut up Sayers and others,do it on the field not in the papers.

SMH at this Urlacher character.

Sayers wasn't even attacking anyone personally, his comments were mild at the most.

Urlacher should be slapped
