The Case of the 40-Minute Game

This article tries to make a case of cutting the NBA game from 48 minutes to 40 minutes. I'm not a big fan of this but the writer does make some good points. NBA games are too long but to me most of it is because of too many commercials and in-between-the-action entertainment. Cut those down significantly and you'll get your standard 2-2:30 game.

I am a huge fan of this, for a few different reasons, but a 3 minute overtime would be terrible.
I would prefer a 5 min overtime.

Re: The Case of the 40-Minute Game

The game being 48 minutes has never been the issue. It wasn't an issue in the 80s and 90s. Reducing the # of timeouts per team or media timeouts would help the game. The issue is more with National TV games than anything. Games that aren't on National TV seem to get over faster because the commercial breaks and media timeouts are shorter.

I went to the 76ers Jazz game this year, one that was on ESPN and all timeouts felt longer. In college basketball during March Madness it's the same thing. The media timeouts are significantly longer and as a result some games just drag on and the college game is 40 minutes. Media timeout length, # of team timeouts and possibly an increase in free throws per game are the culprits of the game being longer.

Re: The Case of the 40-Minute Game

It's a good article but I disagree. But I don't really have a big problem with the length of NBA games, if they find little things to do to cut out dead time, great. One thing I do agree with is making sure games start on time. Baseball and football its very easy to find out the exact time for first pitch/kickoff. If there's a place to find the exact time for tipoff for NBA games I don't know where it is.

Re: The Case of the 40-Minute Game

My biggest issue has never really been the length of the game itself. Instead, it's the breaks in the action that get me. I feel that angle was mentioned within the article, but not particularly focused upon. I think reducing at least one of the mandatory TV time-outs per quarter would be quite beneficial. Though, I know that might be tough to pull off with the marketing and whatnot.

What I'd really love to see implemented is a reduction of time-outs for each team within the final two minutes of a contest. At that point, it's not a matter of "Oh my, full game time is now approaching 2 hours and 30 minutes." It's "Alright, could the ending of this game possibly get any less climactic? Time-outs after every single possession?"

At a Pistons-Bobcats contest last year, I watched each team burn through a combined six timeouts in the final two minutes of regulation. Still, the game went to overtime. And then? Each team was rewarded with another bushel of time-outs. It was just an awful end-of-game experience. Tie games with the clock winding down should be thrill rides, not brief moments of possible excitement smashed in between nothingness.

In short, my problem has more to do with game flow than actual time elapsed.

Re: The Case of the 40-Minute Game

Interesting theory but there is something to say for the ones always trying to make it "easier" for these so called better athletes nowadays.

No matter what, the NBA $$$$$$$$$$$$ machine is in full force, and its too late to change it.
