The relationship is fine. I think they just looked at the resources needed to make such a game and realized it wasn’t worth what they were going to get back in return. Game studios now are so overbloated and cost of making games is somehow higher than ever due to the tech needed that it’s just expensive to enter or re-enter the market.

I mean in the 90s/2000s we have 4-6 different NFL football games because the barrier to entry was low. We had Madden, various versions of 2k, NFL QB Club, Gameday, and Fever. To make all of those games now and make decent sales would be impossible today, hence why only EA is making the game.

For this to make sense, 2k would have to invest a lot in building the game up from almost scratch on the new tech and then hope it sold enough copies to offset the cost of making it in the first 2-3 years or risk being canned. Kind of like what happened to EA with their new golf game. One year, spent a ton on it, then the sales were so bad they just gave up on it.

I believe the NfL wants more money this time around
That's why they wanted Madden to hit certain numbers to get that additional year
