Best Way To Make A Custom Roster?

I'm hoping to make a custom roster for a particular season, say 1985-86. What is the best way to go about this? I'm hoping to avoid major mistakes that would cause me to have to start over half way through.

Should I edit the players on the current rosters, or make all custom teams? Also what are the few really important aspects other than ratings to make it playable, tendencies?

I don't make custom rosters but I know one thing. Make multiple saves since a lot of time 2K will just download it's living roster over something. I would also turn off living rosters.
