Game Notes
College Park, MD. - Maryland started off the season on a sour note after a 27-17 loss to the Kennesaw State Owls, but bounced back with wins against D2 Bowie State (45-7) and Georgia Southern (41-13). A home matchup against the #2 USC Trojans is a considerable step up in competition, a fact that Terps HC DeShawn Foster acknowledged.

"USC is a different animal entirely," stated the former UCLA Bruins HC, "You've got to play 60 minutes of physical, mistake free football. And even then you might not be able to best them."

The former Bruins HC has gone 28-36 over the last five seasons in College Park, but was never able to beat the Trojans while the HC at crosstown rival UCLA.

Maryland QB Jason Ricci has played mistake free football to start the season for Maryland and will need to continue to keep the turnover sheet clean if the Terps have any chance at slaying the Trojans this weekend.

LEFT - Your weekly reminder not to run into the endzone to evade the Trojan pass rush as they record their 4th safety on the season.
CENTER - After an opening drive INT by the Terp D, Nicholas Sandland gave Maryland an early 7-0 lead after beating the press for a 29 yard TD.
RIGHT - PJ Shembo burst through the Terps defense with a 53 yard jaunt to give USC a 27-7 lead.

College Park, MD. - Terps HC DeShaun Foster stated prior to this contest that it would take an entire 60 minute effort to stall the USC Trojans this weekend in Maryland, a fact his team unfortunately proved after they squandered a physical start in an eventual 60-7 beat down at home.

Maryland intercepted a poor pass by Mafu Lambo on the Trojans opening drive and capitalized with a 29 yard TD from Jason Ricci to Nicholas Sandland to open up an early 7-0 lead on the #2 team in the nation. Maryland's defense continued to keep the pressure on Lambo, frustrating the sophomore QB with constant pressured as they recorded three sacks and nabbed another interception in the 2nd quarter.

Unfortunately for the Terps defense, their offense wasn't up to the challenge on the afternoon and surrendered six sacks in the 1st half as they were routinely bowled over by the physical Trojan pass rush.

Terrance Vaughns returned the Terps 1st punt 79 yards to tie the game at 7 and forced the Terrapins to settle for sky punts in an effort to keep Vaughns from flipping the field.

As a result, USC was gifted field goals of 30 and 45 yards after taking over offensively at midfield. Ricci's 1st INT of the season came with under one minute in the 2nd quarter as Maryland attempted to push the ball to cut into the Trojans then 13-7 lead. Instad, PJ Shembo plunged into the endzone with 14 seconds left and despite their best defensive effort, Maryland was in a 20-7 hole at the break.

PJ Shembo and Manny Velasco would finally get the Trojans offense on the right track as they each started, and ended, drives in the 3rd quarter with long touchdowns, of 53 and 55 yards respectively, as the Terrapins finally wore down after squandering a admirable 1st half effort.

In the end USC collected 40 2nd half points in an eventual 60-7 drubbing as their defense continued to harass Maryland QB Jason Ricci to the tune of 14 sacks. The Terrapins would end up with just 19 total yards of offense, despite 141 passing yards, thanks to the negative 122 rushing yards accumulated due to the sacks.

The Trojans will return home to host the Minnesota Golden Gophers (2-3) before embarking on anothe east coast trip to face longtime rival Notre Dame.

Game Notes
Los Angeles, CA. - The Minnesota Golden Gophers opened the season with big dreams after breaking into the pre-season rankings at #16, but its been downhill since then.

Minnesota handled the teams they should have, but have struggled against the upper echelon of talent was Washington (35-14), Alabama (35-20), and Ohio State (30-27) brought the Gophers back to earth.

Offensively SR QB Kevin Abreu and RB Charles Ruffin have kept the Gophers in most of their games, but 2nd half defensive lapses have killed Minnesota in all three of their losses.

USC continues to be driven by their defensive physicality and a punishing rushing attack that has an added wrinkle this year thanks to the speed of QB Mafu Lambo. Lambo has struggled with consistency in the passing game (7TD / 5 INT), but has provided a spark from the back field as he leads the country with 8 rushing touchdowns.

LEFT - Gophers QB Kevin Abreu finally got the Minnesota offense rolling until Cris Amatova perfectly read the screen pass and jumped the route for a pick-six.
CENTER - Interceptions continue to plague Lambo as he tosses two more against Minnesota, including ending the opening drive with a pick for the 2nd straight game.
RIGHT - Kevin Abreu was under pressure all afternoon as USC logged another 5 interceptions.

Los Angeles, CA. - Despite a pair of interceptions by Mafu Lambo, totaling 7 already on the season, the Trojans offense rolled to a 45-6 victory over pre-season darling Minnesota.

Lambo opened the game with another interception, his 2nd straight game with an opening drive INT, but bounced back with touchdown passes of 43 and 56 yards, to Matt Cummings and Braydon Mooney respectively, as USC quickly built a 14-0 lead in the 2nd half.

The aerial assault continued into the 2nd quarter as Mooney collected two more touchdowns, 54 and 19 yards, as he burned the defense in every direction in a statement game for the true freshman. Lambo would finish the 1st half 7/12 with 241 passing yards and four TDs as USC took a 38-0 lead into the half.

Minnesota was able to muster 87 yards in the 2nd half (125 1st half yardage) as they were able to chip in two field goals to avoid the shutout in an otherwise forgetful west coast trip.

USC will embark on the road once again next week as they travel to South Bend, Indiana for their annual matchup with longtime rival Notre Dame, who fell to 4-3 on the season after losing to #9 Middle Tennessee State 35-31.

Game Notes
South Bend, IN. - Newly hired Notre Dame HC Adrian Curtain went 11-2 last season with San Diego State, but is finding the air is a bit thinner at Notre Dame as the Irish have struggled to a 4-3 start after losses to Louisville (35-33), Duke (33-30), and Middle Tennessee (35-31).

Offensively, they are the #1 unit in the nation with just over 400 YPG and 37 PPG, but in a stark contrast to their offensive efficiency the Irish defense ranks dead last in YPG allowed and is the direct contributor to their 3 losses this season.

Despite the up and down season for Notre Dame if Curtain can lead the Irish to only their 2nd win over the Trojans in the last 10 years it will definitely serve as a morale boosting moment for the 1st year Irish HC.

On an interesting side note, JR RS QB Tim Williams was heavily recruited by the USC Trojans in the 2029 draft class before opting to take his talents to South Bend. The junior is lighting up defenses in his 1st year as a starter with 1,965 passing yards and a TD/INT ration of 21/2.
