Rich Rodriguez out as Michigan coach/hires Brady Hoke

myFOXdetroit.com Staff - Sources tell Fox 2 that Rich Rodriguez is being relieved of his duties as head coach of the University of Michigan football team. The decision being made just three days after his team suffered the worst bowl loss in school history, a 52-14 trouncing at the hands of Mississippi State in the Gator Bowl. Fox 2's Ryan Ermanni learned that Michigan Athletic Director David Brandon is informing Rodriguez of his decision to terminate his services. The Michigan football team will be informed of the decision later this evening. Rodriguez was 15-22 during three seasons in Ann Arbor. He lost a school-record nine games in his debut with the Wolverines two years ago, was 5-7 after starting 4-0 last season and turned a 5-0 start into a 7-5 finish this fall.
The Wolverines were also 1-10 against ranked teams, 0-3 against rivals Michigan State and Ohio State and 1-2 against Wisconsin during Rodriguez's tenure. Athletic Director David Brandon would not immediately name a replacement. Rumors have swirled that Stanford's Jim Harbaugh, a former Wolverine quarterback, and San Diego States Brady Hoke, a former U-M coach, are on the list of possible candidates.Reports Tuesday said Harbaugh's return to Michigan, however, is highly unlikely. He is reportedly deciding on staying at Stanford or pursuing a heading coaching position in the NFL.

If this story is accurate, things are going to be bananas. Firing RRod without a "commitment" from Harbaugh or a Les Miles could be a huge mistake.

Not a surprise, it was the right move even with not being able to get Harbaugh.

Not sure how firing him without a replacement would be a mistake. Michigan has become the laughing stock of college football. The sooner he is out of there, the sooner they can start to fix some of the problems that him being there has caused.

I'm sure it's because they are reasonably sure that they can at the very least get Brady Hoke. I don't see Harbaugh going to another college job right now, not while his star is so hot. My money says he's in the NFL next year (hopefully with my Panthers); he can always go back to college.

Unfortunately it looks like the Panthers are only seriously looking at NFL coordinators to fill the HC vacancy... Richardson doesn't want to spend money on a big name

Re: Rich Rodriguez out as Michigan coach

They can have any coach at LSU not named Les Miles or Frank Wilson.
