DIII World Series

Chapman Univ. defeated Christopher Newport University (my Alma Mater) to take the DIII World Series.

can someone explain the brackets? I don't understand them.

Well it's usually straight double elimination.

I'm not quite sure how they ended up w/ ECSU back in the 'winner's bracket' after they won game 9. Had Eastern won game 13, they would have had 3 teams with 1 loss each remaining (Chapman, Eastern and C. Newport). I'm not sure how that would have played out looking at it - although it looks like Chapman and C. Newport would have played 1 game with the winner playing Eastern for the title.

Chapman brought their bats to the championship round 15-2 and 15-7 on the last day. I'm to lazy to look, but I doubt many teams have come up with 4 wins out of the loser's bracket with 2 wins in the championship round to win.

It was normal elimination until games 12 and 13. Then, they readjusted to allow C. Newport to play Eastern because they hadn't played yet. C. Newport had beaten both Chapman and Anderson, and the bracket states the brackets will be adjusted to avoid rematches.

If C. Newport had lost Game 13, then they would have gotten a bye to the championship game, by virtue of having won game 11. The other two teams would have played to see who joined Newport in a winner take all championship game.

I'm not sure what the rationale is for designing a bracket this way. It seems to take away the reward for winning the winner's bracket (you don't get the rest you would have, if you got to sit and see who survived the loser's bracket). Instead, you have to play a game in the middle.

It would have been nice to defend the title, but C.N. got a double play liner in the ninth after Eastern had loaded the bases with only one out.

Oh well, not like they won't be back next year . . .

No, Eastern.

I did the play-by-play on radio broadcasts there from 94-96.

It's Division III and the NCAA calls it the Division III Baseball Championship.

What do you know, a DIII baseball thread. I am an alum of Marietta College (1998), which has one of the most successful baseball programs in DIII. The team finished either first or second in nearly every year in the 80's.

The DIII Championships were held in Marietta until 1987, and the school (enrollment 1,200) has produced several big leaguers, including Kent Tekulve, Terry Mulholland, and Dodgers manager Jim Tracy.

Marietta finished runner-up in both 2001 & 2002, beating CNU in the semis in '02 before losing to Eastern Connecticut in the title game.
