FOFC Favorite Rock Act - Round 2 Group D

Heartbreaking loss for %Talking Heads in group C, falling to SRV on the high seed rule in our second tie of the tournament. That was the closest Group C gave us to an upset, but group D holds a couple of possibilities.

Beastie Boys are a tough sell as a rock act, but I love them so much more than Nirvana.

Licensed to Ill might be my favorite album by anybody ever, and Paul's Boutique is a game changer.

Sabotage is my favorite Beasties song. Love them but Nirvana is my favorite band. Both are in the HOF and huge contributors to rock.

As I said in a prior of these threads, Nirvana was the poster child for a rock era which more or less eliminated new rock music for me for most of the 90s.

I don't dislike ACDC . Good history and story. But their music is just kinda boring to me. A few songs I can listen to...some good rockers but it's all kinda the same.

Tom Petty/Moody Blues is a toss up. I think I like them equally.

Both have stuff I love and stuff that's meh.

indeed that one is EXTREMELY tough.

I have to say that I like REM more. Just more my taste. But at least Prince has like a depth of sound and albums.

Clash and Oasis are kinda similar really. I mean hold them up next to each other and their sound is very similar. I never realized that before now.

I never really considered Clash as that punky even tho they are one of the big "punk bands ever" (along with Sex Pistols and Ramones)

Maybe they had a bunch of earlier albums.

Still adore Rock the Casbah and London Calling. Just perfect sound.

I actually do really like the Beastie Boys, yes. But I will agree that that vote is far more a vote against Nirvana than it is for the Beasties.

I have always found the Clash to easily be the most palatable of punk rock bands (amongst the old style punk rock bands). They were a much more commercially presentable form of the genre. I love both of those songs too, along with Should I Stay Or Should I Go.

Yeah, really. I went with REM because they are one of the few acts I own every album of. But Prince... I mean, c'mon. His 80's output is up there with anyone in any decade ever. I even like some of that carryover into the 90's. Too bad he didn't make it back around to have a renaissance.

I will vote against U2 in every poll.

Same here. I think, for me, it all comes down the awful lead singer with his 3-note range. Nearly all rock singers of the 70s and 80s had great range. Musically AC/DC was good, vocally they suck.

I think this depends greatly on if you are talking about Scott or Johnson.
I think that's a fair descriptor of the latter but wholly inaccurate for the latter.

Sure many more know Johnson...but their best music was pre 1980

No.

Back In Black assures that this is not true.

BIB is more iconic....I'd say the earlier stuff is better technical music.

74 Jailbreak is still my favorite work of theirs even though I do like a lot of the work after Scott.

I can't stand U2, but outside of that there isn't really an artist/band here that I feel particularly strongly for or against.

Doesn't seem like there's much middle ground on U2. Not sure if it is more popular, in general, to hate them or like them, but curious for those that don't like them is it the music itself or their politics, or some combination of both?

For me it was two extremely talented artisits who I like a lot of their stuff.

My choice came down to 1 is a rock act and the other is decidedly (IMHO) not.

For me it's just the music. I don't actually hate them, I just think they are incredibly overrated. They are a perfectly fine band - very good, even (I really enjoy Where the Streets Have No Name in particular). I just really don't think they are upper echelon, all-time good.

My friend and I have this conversation all the time - they are the exact inverse of Nickelback, who is hated so much that they are actually underrated. Not that I enjoy them much, or at all - they just aren't nearly as bad as the hate they engender would lead you to believe.

I think it is hard to really pin Prince to a specific genre as he crossed into so many. Dude was so talented though he could have kicked ass in about any genre he chose if he had focused on one.

I really like U2. But if you subtracted their best album from their catalogue (Achtung, Baby), they would be much lower in my rankings. However, that album is in my all-time top 5, so it carries them a long way in my eyes. Given the choice of keeping Achtung, Baby or the rest of their catalogue, I'd take Achtung.

Replace Achtung, Baby with Joshua Tree and you've got my take on it. Tracks 1-3 of Joshua Tree are all top 10 songs for me.

I think that's part of why they're so popular. They have 2-3 albums from their different eras as a band that spoke to a big chunk of people who may not think the rest of their work is that great, but that 1 is an all-time great to the fans that like it.

Oasis are one of those bands that you need to listen to a lot of their music. Some of their B sides are better than the hits. Until you go that deep, you can't get what they are about. Certainly up there with the Beatles, Queen etc. Incredible range of music. Huge band in the UK but they never seemed bothered about expanding their market strangely.
