On Wednesday, Coca-Cola announced plans to stop selling Coke Zero in the US in August, replacing it with a beverage with a different recipe, design, and name: Coke Zero Sugar.

I wonder why they're revamping the one that's gaining in sales instead of the one that's falling.

Eh, I'm willing to give those crazy soda scientists a chance

Coke Zero over Diet Coke for sure. But I am willing to give the new version a try.

I don't think I have had a coke in 20 years, literally the only carbonated thing I drink is tonic, because it mixes nicely with Gin.

I should, I so totally should. Except that it's my go to caffeine drink when I'm working. I don't drink coffee or tea, so it's either Diet Coke or Diet Dew. And there are simply times where that kind of thing is necessary. I know I should quit it, but I don't think I can.

Don't you know that drinking a caffeine beverage this late at night can fuck with your sleep cycle? WTF are you thinking? Knock that shit off.

Heh heh I'm going on three hours sleep. Metallica could play a whole set next to my bed and I would be able to sleep through it.

Yes, in this case it seems they might be mimicking Pepsi for the better. Pepsi has "Pepsi Zero Sugar", and it tastes not that far off from Pepsi.

Unlike Coke Zero, which has its own taste, but it is definitely not Coke. I too am a big Coke Zero drinker, and look forward to trying the new flavor.

I started with outrage, too. I feel like Coke Zero is the smartest thing that "big soda" has done for me in some time.

But I'm drifting toward seeing this as an off-ramp. I have cut way back on my soda consumption anyway, and this might make an easy place to just pull off the road completely, like some of you already have. It's for the better, without a doubt.

My son was demolishing Diet Mt Dew six-packs until recently when he decided to limit himself to a bottle a day.

Sprite Zero is good. Wife much prefers Diet Coke to Coke Zero (and dislikes Diet Pepsi). I like Coke Zero but don't drink it often enough to buy it. I've been sticking to the house brand 2-liters of Diet Ginger Ale or Diet Dr. Perky.

This is where I am on the subject. I like Coke Zero much better than Diet Coke and drink it frequently. I tried a regular Coke recently and was turned off on the extreme sugary taste.

Does anyone know if it the new mixture has been released? Saw new labeling on a machine today and still tasted good, though not sure if it was different.

I saw some at Costco today. The bottom half of the pallet was the new Coke Zero Sugar, while the top was the regular Coke Zero. Wasn't able to pull one of the new ones out to try.

That orange citrus breakfast-y one is so freakin' good that I'd probably drink it even if there was no caffeine-y goodness in it.

Of course if it did end up in a 2-liter then they'd probably charge $12/bottle or something.

Coke Zero Sugar is pretty much all the good stuff from Coke Zero minus the shitty Coke Zero aftertaste.

Completely botched launch for a pretty excellent product.

I know this is a Coke thread, but has anybody had the Pepsi Fire yet? I've been watching my soft drink intake lately (damn getting old), but it may have become my go-to soft drink over Cherry Coke. Noticeable cinnamon taste and a "fiery" cinnamon aftertaste.

I wouldn't say that. It's definitely sweeter than Coke Zero. Its not bad, but it's not as good IMO.

This Paste Magazine article hits it on the nose, IMO:

Coke Zero vs. Coke Zero Sugar: An Official Paste Taste Test :: Drink :: Features :: Coke zero sugar :: Paste

Quote:
Coke Zero

The “original” Coke Zero is very much “old timey cola” on the nose, with notes of cola nut, cinnamon and sweet spices. On the palate, it’s honestly a little bit nondescript: Semisweet standard cola, with a slight medicinal note on the back end. It would be a mistake to describe it as “not sweet,” because it is, but in comparison to the Coke Zero Sugar it’s drier and slightly sharper and more “tinny,” in a way that isn’t necessarily unpleasant—just different. It certainly finishes more crisply than Coke Zero Sugar does, and is just a drier cola in general, which one might argue boosts its drinkability or the likelihood of finishing a whole can.

Coke Zero Sugar

From the moment of first sip, it’s difficult to deny that Coke Zero Sugar doesn’t taste more like Coca Cola Classic than its predecessor—it just does. If you immediately react in a negative way toward Coke Zero Sugar, then you’re probably not a big fan of the classic Coca Cola taste profile, because that’s what they’re trying to replicate here. The nose is similar, but more layered with vanilla and brown sugar. On the palate it’s noticeably sweeter, with a slightly more syrupy texture and rounded mouthfeel. It’s a more overtly “sugary” type of sweetness that Jason Rhode described as a “sugar lift,” noting “It does a better job of fooling my taste buds into believing that they’re drinking a can of Coca Cola Classic.” The sweetness affects the entire flavor profile, giving a note that I have written down as “maraschino cherry.”

Is this better, or worse than Coke Zero? That, I’m afraid, will depend on your perception. Some may decry Coke Zero Sugar as too sweet or syrupy, while others may find it closer to what they always wanted from Coke Zero in the first place. I find myself falling somewhere in the middle for now. In tasting the two side by side, I picked up more tinny artificiality in Coke Zero than I have in the past, but at the same time the sweetness of Coke Zero Sugar made me feel like I might be less likely to finish a full can at any given time. I immediately wanted to try pouring the Coke Zero Sugar over ice, which might also have a measurable effect in balancing the sweetness.

Maybe we'll get a Coke Zero Classic sometime in the future for those of us who like the drier cola better .

I don't have a sophisticated palate but prefer the orig Coke Zero. It seems to have more fizz and more "taste". The new version is sweeter but doesn't seem to have that oomph (?).

Coke Zero was miles ahead of Diet Coke. I wish they would just keep it.

I'm very confused by the marketing of this new product. I've seen the ads a bunch of times now, and maybe it's just me, but I keep hearing it called "Coke zero SUGAR", with the emphasis on "sugar". Shouldn't the emphasis still be on "zero" or am I just hearing it wrong?

It's how I would expect them to advertise for one of those real cane sugar versions.

One thing I noticed about the new drink is that it goes flat much faster than the caffeine-free Coke Zero I normally drink. As in, I opened a can of each side by side and a couple of hours later the Zero Sugar product was notably less carbonated than the other. At least in my area they still seem to be stocking the caffeine-free version of the earlier formula (fingers crossed). If they stop offering that, I might just switch to diet Canada Dry or something.

Giving up on the new Coke Zero, can't get over the "flatness".

Going back to Diet Coke.

How flat is the new coke zero where diet coke is considered "less flat"?

This is how I would describe it

New Coke Zero Sugar- Very Flat and other issues : Soda
Quote:
Lack of carbonation(no bite at all), also very flat in taste too(as in no coke taste)
Overly sweet with a very confusing aftertaste to it a really bitter chemical aftertaste with a little hint of raspberry perhaps cherry like taste, in the end with dry mouth feel(maybe coke taste testers couldnt taste bitter?)
Overall: Reminded me of own brand supermarket diet cola, Coke Zero Sugar tastes like a cross between Coke and Diet Coke while being pretty flat or maybe the Diet Coke combined with Coke Life.

Edit: evidently taste buds differ quite a bit. There's plenty of these reviews out there

http://people.com/food/new-coke-zero-sugar-taste/
Quote:
The cans of Coke Zero Sugar promise a “new and improved taste”—but does it deliver? To put their success to the test, four PEOPLE staffers (and avid Coke Zero fans) did a blind test, side by side—and the results were split right down the middle.

The new recipe was noted by one taster to have “a stronger overall taste and leaves a sweeter aftertaste,” with another adding that it “doesn’t taste as fake.” Both of these staffers preferred Coke Zero Sugar to the original.

Some purists, though, still preferred the old one—saying it tasted “more like the real Coke” and “less chemical-y.” Another note was that the new version tasted flatter and less carbonated.
