Getting tougher. I greatly respect Traffic, but the Dead have a bigger, better resume. And as much as I value Joy Division, Supertramp has two brilliant albums and another great song from another record which gives them a better case.

I saw Million Dollar Quartet over the 4th of July break and got a newfound appreciation for Jerry Lee Lewis.

Sublime is the worst band in the history of the world, and I'm offended that they're even on this list.

Judas Priest v. Tears for Fears will be an interesting one. I'm not sure the 80s produced a better song than Everybody Wants to Rule the World.

Too bad it's more pop than actual rock. That this is even close illustrates the weakness of the original list, as well as the bizarre nature of FOFC posters.

Very interesting stylistic battle. With Priest (at least in their heyday) you have classic 80's metal (though with more than a bit of pop sensibility), and with Tears For Fears a new-wave group that evolved to bring a lot of jazz sensibilities into their mix. And "Sowing the Seeds of Love" was one of the better impressions of late-period Beatles that I've heard. |

Was slightly surprised at their omission, as they didn't make the tournament coming in at 318 in the rankings. I know they fell off after their debut album, but still, they had a very unique style. Others of note that didn't make it Sweet (273) Quiet Riot (274) Collective Soul (280) Eddie money (292) Warren Zevon (305) Hootie and the Blowfish (314) Skid Row (315) April Wine (322) This rating is way too low! Ratt (334) Cheryl Crow (348) UFO (355) criminally underrated band Matchbox Twenty (373) Kid Rock (378) Maroon 5 (383) James Gang (400) Dire Straights (423) Shockingly low Bad Brains (444) The Outlaws (449) Everclear (457) Night Ranger (546) Okay, fucking Spinal Tap is ranked higher than Night Ranger at 542, are you kidding me? Alter Bridge (557) Oingo Boingo (599) |

After looking at that list & comparing with some of what has been included, umm ... credibility does become a bit of an issue for the list.
Then again we actually have voters taking Tears For Fears seriously as a rock band against one of the Mount Rushmore bands of their era so I'm not really sure how much the original list matters. That pretty much relegates this to joke status.

The rankings definitely cast a wide net in terms of genre of "rock" and/or what it takes to qualify, but it is pretty much equal to any act that created music with even the slightest amount of "rock" in it. As far as the voting, it is favorite act, so it is a matter of taste. So Tears for Fears winning is pretty much is an "is what it is result" to me. I am surprised they are beating Priest too, but that's what makes this tournament fun. You never know how tastes will influence the vote and it would be boring if all the top seeds won. As others have mentioned, just the age demographic of this board will result in some very talented current bands not getting the votes they may deserve. At least in terms of talent/product. What you call "fun" I call not being able to take it seriously. That's akin to a groundswell of support that names the Rolling Stones as the top motown/soul/r&b group of all time. It could happen ... but it would also be fucking ridiculous.

I actually really like Sublime. They had a distinctive sound that they owned, and I can tell you, as a 20-something Cali kid in the 90s, the message they were sending fit my crowd perfectly. But, I agree. It's a travesty Oingo Boingo is so low in general. They were a terrific band. They also had a distinctive sound and culture that they completely owned. I went to their Halloween shows a few times amd those Dead Men's Parties were amazing. Extremely underrated.

I didn't totally mean to trash on sublime. Someone mentioned them before so they were an easy target. But they represent 90s one hit wonder. I like the 90s and seeing them represented but seeing one hit wonders of the 90s 80s 70s 60s make the list over people with such distinctive sounds and history of work like oingo and dire and crow. I honestly think that this sort of tournament would be more fun flighted. Very few people would argue Beatles/Stones/Who/Presley against almost anyone on this list, but the interesting competitions are the Judas Priest v Tears for Fears ones.

I pretty much agree with everything here--except for calling Sublime a one hit wonder. They may not have hit your personal airwaves too much (I'm guessing), but several of their songs have been and continue to be regularly played on multiple alt rock stations wherever I have gone. On top of your one hit (guessing that is "What I Got", Sublime's most well known song), they are particularly well known for "Santeria" and the "Date Rape" song. Several songs on their selftitled album (6 time platinum) are fsirly likely to be heard on any alt rock station in any city of some size. You have also likely heard their cover of the Toyes' "Smoke Two Joints" although maybe you didn't realize it is them. I agree with you about Oingo and Dire and many of those others (I would go to a Boingo show over most other bands in any top 250 or top 600, including Sublime), but Sublime is considered to be one of the most influential punk-ska fusion bands to ever come along, and who knows how far they might have gone if Bradley Nowell hadn't passed away OD on heroin.

In fairness, by the numbers, they are a three-hit band: What I Got, Santeria, and Wrong Way (neither the original nor the re-issue of Date Rape got significant airplay as far as I can tell). That's a #1 and a pair of #3 on the alternative/modern rock charts. The difference in spins for those chart positions is pretty minimal (depending on the life cycle of each of course) The difference most likely comes from What I Got crossing over as a mainstream rock hit whereas the other two didn't. That represents, give or take, probably twice as many total spins at that point. That means greater penetration, and creates the sense for some that they were a one-hit wonder.

Agreed. And I entirely can see Sublime being a huge niche band, as opposed to being a widespread hit machine. But it's not the obly band like that on this list. There are many that are very significant within their niches, while getting only abbreviated airplay on mainstream, national airwaves. For instance, some of the best metal bands almost never got.mainstream airplay, but I would put up Metallica (which didn't get any mainstream airplay until releasing "Nothing Else Matters"), Megadeth, Iron Maiden, etc. up against most of the best mainstream rock bands of all time. Same canbe said of many different musical niches and their various seminal influencers and acts. Really, I just protest to dismissing Sublime as a one hit wonder. True one hit wonders aren't so influential nor do thwy more than rarely get airplay from more than one song.

Sublime is not a one hit wonder. In addition to songs mentioned, Summertime got a lot of airplay. If the guy had not OD'd their follow up would have sold well on the rep of the last album. They have more hits and more recognizable songs than Joan Jett who is in the hall of fame off the success of one cover song.
