FOFC Favorite Rock acts - Play in Round - Voting Closed

With the favorite movie tournament winding down I thought it would be fun to start a favorite rock act tournament, so here goes. Hopefully it will be as enjoyable as the movie tournament has been (Thanks Carman)

The seedings are based on ranker.coms rankings for all-time best rock bands. But, as with the movie tournament, this is about favorite and not necessarily the best (which is subjective anyway)

The tournament includes not only "traditional" rock bands, but also blues, Motown, etc artists that have some type of rock connection. It includes both bands and individual artists.

I selected the top 264 from the ranker.com list and we will start with acts ranked 249-264 in a 16 act play-in round to make the main 256 act tournament.

So, without further adieu, the first 16.

Counting Crows shouldn't make the top-256 of anything. Top 256 of bands with "Crows" in the title. They are terrible.

My music stances are much stronger than my film ones, so I'm in.

Should be fun.

I'm going to place the over/under of number of classic (70's) band in sweet 16 at 14.

You make it sounds like that's a bad thing.

Thanks for doing this, I didn't know there was an imdb-like ranking. I'll certainly do my part to vote up the classic rock bands.

As will our tastes.

Of the 16 in this round there were only 4-6 that I even consider truly "rock" acts, only 2-3 that I'd intentionally listen to under any circumstance.

I don't think I've even heard of half these bands, but I am interested in the tournament though.

Yeah, that made me go look up your age
(Not a diss, I was simply curious to see if that was the key factor)

Give or take, I'd say around half (maybe a little more) of the ones listed here no longer existed as functioning bands on the day you were born.

Same. So I voted for the ones I did hear of... or the one that sounded like an interesting band name .

I liked some of Counting Crows earlier stuff, but they fell apart as they went along.

Garbage is my favorite of this list.

Tough draw, a not-entirely-rock band against a dead center rock guy that has name value with at least two decades.

LOL, my wife endorses this post. She doesn't know horse racing, so she bet on the shiniest ones when we played them. (Actually came out ahead too)

woohoo Badfinger comeback! Their story is immensely sad. 2 of em committed suicide...meanwhile I despise Counting Crows.

oh wait...whoops. I confused them with the black crowes.

That one is going to the wire. Just too bad the winner has a first round match up waiting for them against

With perhaps the single best male rock vocalist of the past 20 years or so.
(Though Russell Allen is at the point of giving him a run for that title)

One interesting thing I found about these rankings is how many band member also appear as solo artists, which you will see.

Jon Bon Jovi is in for his band and solo, and as you would expect all of the Beatles are in as solo artists, with Paul McCartney showing up a 3rd time with wings as well. Neil Young is also counted as a solo artist outside of Crazy Horse, but is not included in the Crosby, Stills and Nash incarnation that included him.

Almost done calculating all the first round brackets and there will be some interesting matchups as we move past the first round.

Ironically, I'm ok with the faces losing, but if that was the Small Faces (the original lineup with Steve Marriot instead of Rod Stewart) I'd be raising me some hell....the Small Faces probably didn't even make the list.

Sheesh, some of these were pretty tough. If this is the play in round, the actual tournament could be brutal. Looking forward to this one.

I accidentally put 4 days for the poll instead of 2, so I will end this tomorrow at 8. Thinking two full days is enough to get a good number of votes in, unless anyone thinks 3 would be better?

2 days should be enough, since it's the play-in round. Is anybody really gonna be offended if one of these bands doesn't make the round of 256?

It will be. This is, to me at least, way more subjective, but there are many more people here who are super passionate about music than movies. I predict one suspension before this one is over.

This event is going to hammer home how little rock music I actually know. It has to be at least a dozen times my wife has been playing the radio and I'll ask who's this and she'll sadly reply, The Beatles...

Okay, I am closing this one then and we will move to the tournament proper, with two full days to vote for each group.

There will be 16 first round groups, so that will help us get through things somewhat quickly and should give enough exposure.

A reasonable argument could be made that I'm actually more passionate AND more absolute about this subject than about politics.
