Posted before I did. Good work.

Man, all of my favorite voices from the grunge era are dropping like flies: Kurt Cobain, Layne Staley, Scott Weiland (I know STP weren't really grunge, but work with me here) and now Chris Cornell? Somebody please send Eddie Vedder a personal bodyguard to look after him.

He doesn't need a bodyguard he needs a nutrition doctor and an AA buddy

Wow, so now all the four horsemen of Seattle grunge are dead. Weiland, Staley, Cobain, Cornell.

If there was a mount rushmore of legendary lead singers from the pacific northwest, there it is, IMO.

Wow, that blows. Out of left field.

I saw Soundgarden a couple years ago on tour with NIN. It was a great show and Cornell sounded great.

RIP

I'm totally stunned. He's been one of my top 5 for a long, long time. I haven't seen them since back in the college days, but he always blew me away. I missed a couple chances to see him later on because of work and time and money, and I regret it. It sucks. This one hits hard. He's been sober for years, so I don't think it was drugs. I've followed him from SG, to his solo career, to Audioslave, back to solo, back to SG and never got old. Very saddened by this one. He was so much more than an incredible voice. His songwriting was top notch, and he could carry a band, any band. Just fuck.

If you really wanted to, you'd throw Andrew Wood in there instead of Wieland. Massive talent that ended up launching PJ. Cornell's work on Temple of the Dog (to celebrate Wood) gave us one of the greatest front to back albums from that era.

And he just played Detroit last night and was tweeting happily about it before the show.

There's a lot of decent video of the last show out there, I wish I had gotten to see him live at some point.

Cornell has battled depression before, so it's not totally surprising he'd commit suicide. But it's incredibly sad, and another tragic reminder that depression is literally a life and death matter - get treatment and don't be stubborn about taking medication to treat it.

This one hits really close to home. He's my generation from my city, and of all the Seattle bands, Soundgarden was the one that grabbed me the most. An incredible vocalist, very good guitar player and impressive songwriter. Just terrible news to wake up to.

Was not the biggest fan, but loved a fair amount of the Soundgarden stuff he did at the height of their day.

Really sorry to hear about this.

It just doesn't seem to make sense about the hanging. Band on tour, guy has a family, seemed to be in good spirits.. What demons were eating at him to cause this?

Or was it auto-erotic asphyxiation being painted as suicide to save some dignity?

I'm leaning toward the latter personally, but I don't care if I ever find out whether or not that is factual. It sucks that it happened and that many will be left without answers. Hopefully his family knows the truth and that's all that matters.

So, seems awfully curious that he would be prescribed Ativan given how he's talked about issues with depression in the past. Among the side-effects:
  • thoughts of suicide or hurting yourself

Also:

To make sure Ativan is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have:
  • a history of depression or suicidal thoughts or behavior
  • a history of drug or alcohol addiction

Check, and check.

From watching some clips of his performance, it certainly fits with his wife's contention that he took too many of them.

I just started taking Ativan last week and I love it. I fall asleep within 10 minutes and never wake up in the middle of the night. I have no depression at all thankfully.
Does anyone else take it? I see it can be addicting. Sorry not trying to derail the thread.

Yeah I've seen a lot of sentiment elsewhere on the internet that this is "big pharma" at it again. Seems to me reading through his history and looking at songs he wrote that it probably wasn't Ativan (or extra does of Ativan) that lead to his suicide. No reason to pile on the guy who just died I agree but also not really the time to go after pharmaceutical companies who help a lot of people either.

I don't see this as an issue with "big pharma", but it could be a case of malpractice by the doctor that prescribed it. Of course that depends on what Cornell told him about his mental health history and history of alcohol abuse, and whether it's true that he suffered from clinical depression.

I've taken it situationally to help in spots that give me extreme anxiety. Before dental procedures for example. I've never taken it consistently for any time, however.

I'd definitely do a little research into benzodiazepines if you've been prescribed it to take regularly over a long term. You can build up a tolerance requiring higher doses over time and it can be a bitch to get off of.

dola, I took ambien for many years, its not exactly the same class of drugs but is similar apparently. It took me about 3 months to taper off it safely when I decided I didn't want to rely on it anymore. Also I had a couple instances where I messed up a refill (or my doctor messed up a refill), and missing a night of it once I'd been on it for some time was a legit nightmare. The few times it happened to me it meant a sleepless night with a couple horrible panic attacks. Apparently stopping suddenly after taking for a long time there's a small chance of siezures as well. I never had tolerance issues, I was able to stay on the same (10mg) dose for many years and it remained effective. I've read lots of reports from others who had problems requiring higher doses over time and then had a much bigger problem getting off it.

Will do Radii. Thanks! Ambien is interesting. My main problem is sleeping in which I wake up in the middle of the night and takes me 2 hours to get back to sleep. Also it takes awhile just to fall asleep when going to bed. My mother who recommended Ativan because she says I need to calm down lol. So is ambien better for sleep than Ativan?

Not to be "that guy", but if you don't actually have a prescription for Ativan, please see a doctor and talk to a pharmacist. Many of these drugs have serious side-effects and not only can it be dangerous to take them without making sure they're the right solution for you, the person giving them to you can get in big trouble.

Ativan is like the worst choice you make for a sleeping pill. It's side effects are numouours and severe (including suicidal thoughts) and the withdrawal when you stop using it can actually kill you. It also causes long term problems with memory and thought processes as it builds up in your system and can mimic the signs and symptoms of dementia.

Bingo. Anxiety is a life altering condition for many. In that circumstance it is a drug worth taking and the reality is that nearly all anxiety medications come with similar side effects. There are just so many other options for sleep aids that it isn't worth the risk.

When I had issues with depression back around 2009, I was given Ativan once during a hospital visit. The most blissful feeling I had ever felt. I can see how it can be addictive. It is unfortunate that the long term effects are so bad with regards to brain health.

The good news is that something new is in the works that is outperforming Ativan without major short term or long term side effects, something called BNC210. I'm excited for it to finish its trials. I think it is entering phase III soon. It might still be a while before it comes out and becomes available, but the stuff sounds about as close to a "happy pill" as has ever been developed.

I've been prescribed 2-3 anti-depressants as off-label insomnia treatments...lots of folks' insomnia is at least somewhat related to anxiety, and I get the impression it's become pretty common, fwiw.

Likewise I see folks questioning the 'suicidal thoughts' warning, but as far as I can tell that's become a standard disclaimer for ALL anti-anxiety and anti-depression medication (probably out of fear of liability), which makes it all the more difficult for a casual observer to figure out if it actually means anything.

I've had lots of depression and tons of anxiety especially in the area of sleeping. I've taken ativan before and it really did help me.

Especially getting to sleep and stopping my brain on its treadmill of "Why can't I sleep" during nights where it was crucial that I DO sleep.

I don't ever recall any of that type of stuff granted I get depressed sometimes anyway.

And the doctors in general haven't precribed that to me for a LONG time.
i took a low dose when i needed it tho. i recall taking some on planes too

They give me bottles of ambien tho

i had xanax once. half a pill of those little babies knocked me right out. love those things.

A bit more info on Ativan and some of the things to watch out for if you are taking it:

http://www.rollingstone.com/culture/...-pills-w483638

This summary jibes pretty well with what my wife (a pharmacist) told me about it.

yeah the last dose of "...pan" I was given was this. Also effective but they were really shy about giving it to me. They give me ambien by the truckload tho.
