Anyone ever bricked a TV?

Was going through the visual setup portion of a PS4 game this morning when my TV basically shut down. It made a clunk noise, black screen, and now doesn't respond to anything, even pressing the power button (the "on" light stays on). Remote does nothing. Unplugging and plugging back in will allow the power button to turn it on, but nothing else.

Anyone ever had anything similar? Any easy way to fix and/or reset things?

We had that happen to an old 32" - heard a pop, went black. Of course, that was an old CRT TV (which for whatever reason we actually got fixed - surprisingly, there are still TV repair shops). SO...yeah, that probably doesn't help you any.

When you say black screen do you mean the screen is off or that it's lit up but nothing is on it? Hope that makes sense.

As best I can tell, it's off. Even though the power button is lit (and stays lit even when the button is pressed).

I'm going to guess it's the power supply board.

If you're looking to be a bit adventurous, there are a ton of YouTube videos on how to test the power supply board to see if it's the issue (maybe can even find one for your specific TV). You'll need a multimeter and a little caution. From there if that's the problem, you can just order a new one if the TV is expensive enough to salvage.

It could be something else but your symptoms sound a lot like power supply board issues. I asked before about Samsung because they have a history of those kind of problems.

OK, so after fiddling with the power button a bit I figured out that if I hold it long enough it turns off, and that turning it back on again will make it start blinking. Based on the number of blinks and some google searches, sounds like there's a board in there that's fried and will need replacing.

if the light is blinking, that's an error code. Is it a plasma or a LCD panasonic? A loud clunk is probably bad news.

edit Okay, you found the blinking light, that's at least a good start.

If its a plasma and you are a plasma fanboi..*raises hand* its worth fixing.

Display board, flyback xfmr, or cap problem is most likely culprit on vierra plasamas.

If you arent VERY GOOD at PCB repairs, just order the board. The XFMRs are a beotch on these.

yup, this happened to my panasonic plasma

love the picture, thought it was worth fixing rather than getting a new tv (and cost less too). year later, still going strong. i left it to a professional though, who if i recall said it was actually due to cheap screws or something, which caused vibrations, which lead to something or other breaking.

Am going to take this into a service center and see how much it would cost to fix.
