Indiana Jones Trilogy to be released on DVD!

The man in the hat is back--and on DVD for the first time.

Looking to tide folks over until the eventual release of the fourth Indiana Jones feature, Paramount Home Entertainment announced Tuesday that it finally plans on releasing the first three Indy films on November 4 as part of a four-disc DVD set.

Dubbed The Adventures of Indiana Jones: The Complete DVD Movie Collection, the set will not only feature all three Indy flicks--1981's Raiders of the Lost Ark, 1984's Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and 1989's Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade--but will also include a disc devoted to bonus material, including brand new interviews with director Steven Spielberg (news), producer-writer George Lucas (news) and star Harrison Ford (news).

"When we began, we kind of went on our own Indiana Jones archaeological dig in the Lucasfilm archives to see what we had and kind of hit a treasure trove of materials," says Jim Ward, vice president of marketing for Lucasfilm (which is producing the set with Paramount) and an executive producer of the DVD. "What we're trying to do right now is figure out what will go on that final disc...we have a lot of great never-before-seen things."

In the name of fortune and glory, the filmmakers didn't hesitate to raid the vaults. Among the goodies unearthed for the bonus disc: interviews with cast and crew members, new behind-the-scenes documentaries, featurettes on visual effects and music and hithtero unreleased footage cut from the original films.

One highlight is a deleted fight between Indy and a Cairo swordsman that Spielberg spent days choreographing only to have Ford--under the weather because of a stomach virus--improvise and just shoot the baddie, which wound up in the finished Raiders and was one of the best-remembered moments. The full scene has been resurrected for the DVD.

The Indy DVD set is expected to retail for approximately $50.

According to several DVD-centric Websites, the Indiana Jones movies rank behind only the original Star Wars trilogy as cinephiles' most-requested titles never released on the format.

And Paramount and Lucasfilm have not let them down in keeping up with the Jones.

Not only has each film been remastered in THX surround sound, but they have also been digitally preserved by Lowry Digital Images--the company behind the restoration of such classics as Paramount's Sunset Boulevard and Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

Noticeably absent, however, are audio commentaries from Lucas, Spielberg and Ford. (Guess we'll have to wait for the next special edition for that one.)

Meanwhile, the three principals are still on board for the forever-in-the-works fourth Indiana Jones flick. Spielberg, Lucas and Ford committed to making the project a year ago but are waiting on the script, which is currently being written by Shawshank Redemption writer-director Frank Darabont (news).

"It's all a matter of aligning the planets with George, Steven and Harrison's schedules, but they definitely have the intent to do it," says Ward.

Little is known about the latest quest other than it will be set in the 1950s and focus on a more mature Indy. At 60, the AARP-eligible Ford will be dusting off the ol' fedora--and probably be getting a cortisone shot for those creaky knees.

The fourth adventure will reportedly reunite Indy with his dad, played in Last Crusade by Sean Connery (news), and possibly include a cameo by Temple of Doom's ear-splitting damsel-in-distress, Willie Scott, aka Mrs. Spielberg, Kate Capshaw (news).

Indy 4 is tentatively slated to start filming sometime in 2004 in time for a projected July 4, 2005 release.

I will already die happy with just this DVD set. All I have to do is throw away the 2nd DVD and pray very hard that Capshaw will not be in the 4th movie.

Why do some people hate Temple of Doom? I thought it was as good, if not better than Raiders. Of course, Raiders was just a year or two before my time, while Temple was during my teenage years, and came along with that bunch of movies that defined my youth: Karate Kid, Goonies, Temple of Doom, etc... (at least this is how I remember it)

It's about friggin' time!!! I bought this set on VHS for my Dad years ago, and have been waiting for it to come out on DVD to buy it myself.

I agree Marmel. I didn't think it was bad at all. Okay, maybe not as good as one and three, but sometimes I think the main reason people don't like Temple of Doom is because its emphasis on Far East archaeology didn't appeal to people near as much as the European-Biblical themes from one and three. It's also a much darker movie which I don't think some people want to see in an Indiana Jones flick. I guess they're releasing these to boost interest in the fourth sequel that is supposedly being made?

I originally liked Raiders of the Lost Ark the most, but I have since grown to prefer Last Crusade. Temple of Doom isn't bad, but it's not nearly as good as the other two.

Unfortunatly, I highly doubt they will ever release the original Star Wars Trilogy on DVD. (By that I mean the ORIGINAL trilogy, some day we'll get the special edition "original" trilogy)

Last Crusade is the best, IMO. Raiders was second best, and Temple of Doom was not bad at all. You gotta hate it when they rip your heart out of your chest and throw it into a fiery pit. Sure sign of a bad day in progress.

Sad but true. I know a few Star Wars fans who are jealously guarding their original widescreen, THX enhanced versions on laserdisc... wish they'd just port those to DVD....

I'll but Star Wars when it comes out on DVD. I don't know what the hold up is......it take about 20 minutes to put a film on DVD. He has had years.

Lucas is the greatest merchandising whore on the face of the planet. He struck gold with one good movie 25 years ago and has been pimping it until it's dry and raw ever since.

There's a rumor spreading that he will start charging people to access the official Star Wars website for news as the release date for Episode III approaches. Yeah, I'm getting sick of movies that have ten video games, five lunchboxes and three sets of toys shipped to stores the day the movie is released and flicks that are only approved after all actors and crew are signed for two sequels.

It wasn't so much that it was Far East stuff (even though that has something to do with it) but unlike the other two where the scenes just take you for a ride, Doom relied much more on shrieking and over-the-top gross out - signs of a weak screenplay. But more than anything else, the failure of Doom can be summed up in four words: Kate Capshaw and Short Stop. The latter just got in the way and added nothing while Capshaw's performance was the worse acting job this side of Diana Ross. Karen Allen in Raiders was far, far superior and Capshaw was a depressing letdown.

Marmel, you had to been there when Raiders opened and the unexpected impact that it made.

You are correct, sir.

I have no idea who the bad guys will be in the pending 4th film, but, rest assured, if Lucas has anything to do about it, he'll be entirely shallow and poorly mis-cast and mis-directed. Also, Indy will be sure to have a clever all-CGI sidekick along for the ride this time.

You're skirting around why Temple of Doom blew chunks: SHORT ROUND! What the hell was that? That should have been our clue that one day Lucas would bring us Jar Jar. He's the freakin' cousin Oliver of the Indiana Jones trilogy.
