Harris Earns April's Top Batter Prize in CL

Billy Harris battered Continental League pitchers all April and wound up taking home the Batter of the Month Award.

"I've been around FOOL-X long enough to know you really have to work hard day in and day out to be able to put up this kind of consistency," the 28-year-old Harris told reporters. "I put in a lot of work, even on the days I might not take the field, and it's always nice when everything comes together for me like it did this last month."

In 21 games, Harris hit .354 with 6 home runs, 21 RBIs and scored 15 runs.

Cleveland's Hsueh Snaps up April Batting Award
Friday, May 1st, 2116
Seasoned by several years of professional experience, 33-year-old En-lai Hsueh put together a solid offensive month for Cleveland and was crowned April's top batter in the Republic League.

He batted .364 with 8 home runs, 23 RBIs and 23 runs scored.

Valentín Wins CL Top Pitcher Award

Iván Valentín has been around the league long enough to know that relievers are often overlooked. That has never stopped him from doing what he does best -- and he did it extremely well in April and stole away with the Continental League Pitcher of the Month award.

The Banana Sluggers bullpen ace collected 9 saves and 13 strikeouts in 11.1 innings, holding the opposition to a .209 average and posting a 2.38 ERA and a 1-0 record.

Rattlers Hurler Named April's #1 Starter

Alonso Giuggioli hasn't been around the big leagues long enough to know that youngsters shouldn't be winning Republic League Pitcher of the Month. But when you put up numbers like his, you're going to get some notice.

In April the Maricopa starter earned a 3-2 mark in 5 starts. He threw 35.2 innings, struck out 38 and compiled a solid 1.26 ERA.

Adler Named CL's Best Rookie

Randy Adler of the Omaha Bees has been honored as the top Rookie in the Continental League.

In April he delivered 17 hits, no home runs, 6 RBIs and 10 runs scored. He hit .378 with a .431 OBP.

Waikiki's Springer RL Rookie of Month

23-year-old Paul Springer is deceptively poised for such a young man. In 4 starts he bagged 3 wins in April and took home the Republic League Rookie of the Month Award.

The Waikiki hurler logged a 3-0 record, 25 strikeouts in 24.2 innings, held opponents to a .284 average and compiled an ERA of 2.92.

Continental League Picks May's Best Batter

Though his face is weathered and his hands are calloused, Skip Lucas can still get it done in FOOL-X. In fact, the 36-year-old first baseman for Havana was named the Continental League Batter of the Month today after putting up an impressive performance at the plate.

In May he batted .307 with 9 home runs, 22 RBIs and 20 runs scored.

Looking at his present stats, Lucas has compiled a .266 batting average in 51 games with a .386 on-base percentage, while hitting 14 home runs and driving in 38 runs.

RL Batter of the Month Honors to McMonegal
Monday, June 1st, 2116
The most recent Republic League Batter of the Month trophy was awarded to left fielder Melvin McMonegal of the Waikiki Beach Boys.

In May he stood head and shoulders above all other batters by hitting .321 with 6 home runs, 25 RBIs and 21 runs scored.

This year McMonegal has batted at a .366 pace with 75 hits, 11 home runs, 37 RBIs and scored 44 times.

May's CL Top Pitcher is Bishops Carmona

Despite the number of years he's been in the league, Gabriel Carmona still gets excited when he puts together a quality stretch like he had in May. The 27-year-old starter for London was named Continental League Pitcher of the Month earlier today.

He collected 4 wins and no losses with 17 strikeouts in his 5 starts, putting up a fine 1.22 ERA in 37 innings of work.

Carmona has made 9 starts so far this year and put up a 5-3 won-lost record with a 3.55 ERA. In 58.1 innings he has allowed 63 hits, walked 13 and struck out 32.

Nichol Tabbed as May's Starter of the Month

Veteran Troy Nichol put together quite a successful stretch in May for the Las Vegas Wildcats, earning himself the Republic League Pitcher of the Month award.

Nichol racked up a 5-0 record in 6 starts, posting a 0.76 ERA over 47.2 innings and striking out 39.

This year Nichol has worked 79.2 innings with 65 strikeouts en route to a 8-1 record and a 1.81 ERA.

Pedro López's eyes seem to light up whenever he sees the baseball. The young Havana third baseman has been hitting everything in sight for the better part of a month.

In May he was voted the Rookie of the Month Award.

During the month he hit .295 with 4 doubles, no triples and no home runs. López also scored 3 times and drove in 7 runs.

This season in 40 games López is batting .306 with 2 home runs, 10 RBIs and has scored 6 times.

Bartolo Salas is still a bit shy, but then, who could blame the newest Republic League Rookie of the Month honoree? He hasn't been around the league long enough to fully know the ropes yet, despite the fact that he's putting up veteran-like numbers.

In May the Waikiki hitter tagged opposing pitching for a .291 average with 30 hits, 2 home runs and 15 RBIs.

To date this season Salas is hitting .274 with 3 home runs.

López Grabs CL Best Batter Award for June

Júlio López, the Oshawa left fielder, certainly made a name for himself this past month. He banged out a .388 batting average with 40 hits, 5 home runs, 15 RBIs and scored 24 times.

That kind of hitting earned him the Continental League Batter of the Month honors for June.

Currently López is batting .361 with 8 home runs and 44 RBIs.

Meléndez Cops RL Batter of the Month Honors

In June, Carlos Meléndez let his bat do the talking for him. The Chicago designated hitter smacked the ball at a .438 average as he laid claim to the Republic League Batter of the Month award.

He rapped 1 home run, drove in 12 and scored 23 runs.

This season Meléndez has hit at a .351 clip and produced 29 RBI, 9 home runs and 60 runs.

Farley Garners CL #1 Pitcher Award

Last month's cream of the crop on the mound was Rudy Farley of the St Louis Hops. He captured the Continental League Pitcher of the Month award for his outstanding performance in June.

Farley started 6 games, threw 37.2 innings, yielded 24 hits and logged a 4-0 record. He put down 40 batters on strikes, walked 8 and compiled a 1.91 ERA. Opposing teams batted .176 against him.

So far this season Farley has 8 wins and 4 losses and a 3.76 ERA.

June's Pitcher of the Month Goes to Kennedy

June was a very good month for Dave Kennedy of the Cleveland Naps. He held opposing hitters for a .231 average and took home the Republic League Pitcher of the Month award.

In 7 starts he claimed a 4-2 record as he put up a 2.23 ERA and struck out 11 in 40.1 innings.

This year Kennedy has a 7-8 record with a 5.00 ERA.

June's Top Newcomer Picked by CL

In June Salvador Ortíz swatted his way to the Rookie of the Month Award in the Continental League by putting up a .263 batting average.

The Manchester Terriers second baseman also racked up 25 hits, 1 home run, 7 RBIs and scored 11 runs.

For the season Ortíz is batting .239 with 63 hits and 3 home runs. He has scored 25 times and batted in 19.

Salas Selected RL's #1 Rookie

Youngster Bartolo Salas emerged as the latest Republic League Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Waikiki deserved the honor, batting .258 with 2 home runs and 11 runs batted in. Is the month of June a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Salas enjoy the limelight.

Salas is presently hitting at a .269 pace with 5 home runs and 34 RBIs. He has played in 74 games and scored 31 times.

July's #1 Batter Announced

On the heels of a very productive July, Ken Hodges received Continental League Batter of the Month recognition today.

The battle-tested second baseman hit .372 for the London Bishops and racked up 4 home runs, 26 RBIs and 13 runs scored.

Hodges is hitting .316 this year with 17 home runs, 66 RBIs and 53 runs scored. He has 116 hits in 367 at-bats, 45 walks and a .395 on-base percentage. Hodges has played in 103 games.

July's RL Batter of Month Award Announced

When guys like Maricopa's Pedro Arteaga win Batter of the Month awards, it just makes you feel good. In a productive July, the longtime Republic League veteran toyed with opposing pitchers all month long, collecting 40 hits in 105 at-bats.

The veteran center fielder hit for a .381 batting average and collected 7 home runs, 21 RBIs and 22 runs scored.

This season Arteaga is batting .300 with 130 hits and 15 home runs. He has scored 64 times and has 55 RBI.

July's #1 Hurler Announced: Valentín Wins Award

Iván Valentín was ecstatic to win July's Continental League Pitcher of the Month honors today. The 34-year-old Havana pitcher thanked fans, his coaches and the voters for the honor -- despite the fact that he deserved much of the credit himself.

Valentín's star burned bright last month as he made 12 relief appearances, notching 9 saves and 9 strikeouts in 10 innings. He held opposing hitters to a .200 average to put up his 1-0 mark and 0.90 ERA.

This season Valentín has crafted a 4-2 won-lost mark, pitched in 46 relief appearances and rung up 30 saves. He has a 2.85 ERA and has allowed 37 hits over his 41 innings of work, struck out 43 batters and walked 7.

Wolverines Starter Named July's Premier Pitcher
Saturday, August 1st, 2116
July's elite pitcher was Jason Coleman of Ann Arbor. He silenced Republic League hitters the entire month and claimed the Pitcher of the Month award with 4 wins and no losses in 5 starts.

Coleman restricted opposing hitters to a .252 batting average. He rang up 26 strikeouts in 30.2 innings of work, surrendered 4 walks and crafted a 2.64 ERA.

So far this season Coleman has a 7-6 record, 21 starts, 120 innings, 136 strikeouts and a 4.58 ERA.

CL Names Rookie Star of the Month

One of the Continental League's brightest newcomers, Salvador Ortíz was at the head of his class in July as he picked up the Rookie of the Month honors.

The 26-year-old Manchester second baseman batted .301 with 3 home runs and 10 RBIs.

In 102 games this season Ortíz has compiled a .255 batting average with 91 hits and 6 home runs. He has also scored 39 times and knocked in 29 runs.

Salas Gets RL Rookie of Month Honors

Bartolo Salas earned July's Rookie of the Month honors in the Republic League for last month's performance. The boyish Waikiki catcher might be wet behind the ears, but he's proving that he has what it takes to play at this level.

Salas hit .323 with 3 home runs, 21 RBIs and 10 runs scored this past month on his way to winning the award.

This year Salas is batting .282 with 8 home runs and 55 RBIs.

Hodges Takes Best Bat Trophy in August

Ken Hodges, the London second baseman, had a productive month in August. He put up some solid numbers with a .375 batting average (36 for 96), 2 home runs, 15 RBIs and 17 runs scored.

That standout offense earned him the Continental League Batter of the Month Trophy.

Thus far this season Hodges has hit .328 with 19 home runs, 81 RBIs and scored 70 times.

Prospective free agents love to have hot streaks and Rafael Torres is no exception. The Spring center fielder capped off a fine month by hauling in Batter of the Month honors in the Republic League.

This season in 131 games, Torres has hit at a .271 clip with 130 hits, 26 home runs, 73 RBIs and 76 runs scored.

The Pitcher of the Month in the Continental League for August was Havana's star reliever Iván Valentín.

"I was wondering if relievers were even eligible for this thing," Valentín joked with reporters. "I guess the voters do know there's actual pitchers down there in the pen."

The Banana Sluggers bullpen ace collected 5 saves and 23 strikeouts in 18 innings, holding the opposition to a .172 average and posting a 1.00 ERA and a 3-0 record.

This year his season stats show Valentín has 35 saves in 59 relief appearances with a 7-2 mark and 2.29 ERA.

Sweeney Acclaimed Top Pitcher in August

He was the best pitcher in August according to the voters. Terence Sweeney shut down enemy batters to win the Republic League Pitcher of the Month Award.

Maricopa's star reliever held the opposition to a .197 average and put up no saves and 24 strikeouts in 34.1 innings with a 4-1 mark and a 1.57 ERA.

To this point in the season he has had no saves. Sweeney has made no relief appearances, tossed 159 innings and struck out 109 with a record of 14 wins and 6 losses.

A veritable toddler to the Continental League, Sixto Vázquez just sewed up the Rookie of the Month trophy for August.

Over the past month the 23-year-old center fielder for Manchester hit .263 with 20 hits, 1 home run and 7 runs batted in. He also logged 5 walks and compiled a .313 on-base percentage.

Vázquez is presently batting .229 with 5 home runs, 25 runs scored and 27 RBIs. His OBP is .287.

López Wins CL Prize, Named Best Hitter in September
Thursday, October 1st, 2116
Júlio López of the Oshawa Mullets certainly made a resounding impression on the Continental League pitching corps in September and today reaped the reward as the league's best batter for the period.

The left fielder put up some good offensive figures as he hit .327 with 9 home runs, 23 RBIs and 19 runs scored.

López is hitting .339 in 2116 with 94 RBIs and 26 home runs.

Andersen Named RL Batter of the Month
Thursday, October 1st, 2116
Jack Andersen earned September's Batter of the Month honors in the Republic League by reeling off a .364 average, going 39 for 107 with 11 home runs, 25 RBIs and 28 runs scored.

The soon-to-be free agent was hitting with great urgency in an effort to bolster his asking price in the Portland clubhouse and around the rest of the league.

This season Andersen has 35 home runs and a .286 batting average.

He was the top pitcher in September, according to the voters. Iván Valentín shellshocked enemy batters to win the Continental League Pitcher of the Month Award.

Havana's star reliever held the opposition to a .127 average and put up 7 saves and 19 strikeouts in 15.2 innings, with a 3-0 mark and a 1.15 ERA.

This season Iván Valentín has been credited with 42 saves. In 71 relief appearances and 74.2 innings pitched, he has a 10-2 won-lost mark, 2.05 ERA and 85 strikeouts

Troy Nichol of the Wildcats pretty much bewildered opposing batters in September and was honored as the Republic League Pitcher of the Month earlier today.

The Las Vegas starter sparkled last month with a 4-0 record and 0.50 ERA. He made 5 starts, tossed 36 innings and had 25 strikeouts.

Thus far this season Nichol has posted a 16-7 record, started 32 games, struck out 164 batters in 214.1 innings and compiled a 2.44 ERA.

When all the votes were counted for the Rookie of the Month in September, Sixto Vázquez of the Manchester Terriers was on top of the pile. The standout center fielder rifled hits here, there, and everywhere in Continental League ballparks the entire month to win the honor.

The 24-year-old center fielder took the trophy by putting up a .263 average and .348 on-base percentage, 15 hits, 4 home runs, 9 RBIs and 9 runs scored.

Thus far this season in 149 games Vázquez is batting .234 with 9 home runs, 36 RBIs and 34 runs scored. He has 89 hits in 380 at-bats.

Marquee Month for Ortega, Top RL Rookie

In September, Sixto Ortega knocked Republic League pitchers all over the ballpark all month long and put up numbers good enough to be voted the Rookie of the Month.

Last month the 23-year-old Chicago third baseman played in 25 games and hit .319 with 8 doubles, 3 triples and no home runs. Ortega also scored 10 times and drove in 9 runs.

In his season totals, Ortega has 2 home runs, .250 BA, .309 OBP, 57 RBIs and 59 runs scored. He has played in 153 games.
