Converting a DVD to CD

Hi all, Glen's Wife here...

So my nephew is graduating from high school and is applying for scholarships. One scholarship he is applying for requires a CD of him performing on the marimba, his instrument of choice. Apparently he has DVDs, but no CDs of his performances. Is there a simple, easy way to convert a DVD to a CD?

Should be easy to get a DVD-ripper (maybe HandBrake - HandBrake although I'm not sure what the latest and greatest of them are), and then extract the audio file.

There are definitely website tutorials or user manuals that walk you through it step-by-step. I've used them before, since it's not something I do very often. Really in fact I've only done it one time, but I found it to be pretty simple when laid out step-by-step by the user manual for the program I used.

Just remember that a DVD holds more data than a CD. So depending on how much is on the DVD, it may not all fit on the CD.

Oh yeah - I guess I dunno why I assumed it was just the audio track.

Can you not contact the school to ask them if the DVD you already have will work? I'm certain that the music dept. at this college can handle playing a DVD.

I'm assuming it's video and audio on the DVD, so you may be correct. If it's just audio, unless there's a 8 hour marimba medley on it, I'd be surprised if it's gigs of audio.

I would assume this as well...CD can sometimes be used as a "catchall" phrase.

The requirements for the scholarship clearly state CD and my sister-in-law has contacted the organization. All entries that do not have a CD will be disqualified. Not sure on the reasoning, but rules be rules.

As long as it isn't more than 700MB of data, it should fit on the CD.

I use iSofter DVDtoMP3, I think. I do it regularly enough to have a paid program, but not so often that I can ever remember what I use. I may have also used Prism Video Converter.

I'm pretty sure you would want to rip the audio from the DVD. They are unlikely to want a video performance on a CD. And if they do, that literally makes zero sense.

This kind of absurdity would absolutely make me consider a different school (if it is a music dept. scholarship obv). Yes, they just want the audio track.

The awesome thing is going to be when 2/3 of the freshmen assignments(at least) are to be completed online with no hard copy.

But we need a disc, cause a MP3 format file is too hard.

The scholarship is not to any specific college. And I think its just a bunch of ladies that want to do something good(think red hat society does scholarships). If I had to guess why they want audio only it would be that they can then judge the applicants by talent only, rather than the type of showman they are, or how 'needy' they are.

I was going to say that if a school can't handle a DVD then that might be a sign to apply elsewhere.
