Of Tom Brady and the Patriots
So my new thinking is that the Patriots have been underrated and that Tom Brady has been overrated.
Winning three Super Bowls in four years, and attending five in eleven years, in the salary cap era is an amazing accomplishment. To be able to keep re-loading year after year after year is impressive. We almost take for granted that the Patriots will be great. That does not make it any less impressive. And for a while I bought into the whole "Tom Brady and 52 other guys" thinking about them. Now, I think that I have been selling "the other guys" short and giving Brady too much credit. If I had to pick one QB to lead my team next season, I'd pick (in some order): Brees, Rogers, Rothelisberger, Eil, or Peyton*before I picked Brady. On the other hand, if I had to place a bet on one team to go to a Super Bowl over the next ten years, I'd pick New England. |

Oddly enough, my thinking is complete reverse of yours. I used to think Brady was a system QB and overrated, but now I think he's legitimately one of the top QBs in the game.

I think from 2001-2004 the Patriots were underrated and Brady was overrated. From 2005-today I think the Patriots have been overrated and Brady has been underrated.

Early on, I thought that Brady was overrated. I thought Belichick was smart and just never putting him in a position to fail. Those first 2 Super Bowls were more about their defense than Brady.
This is something I thought about last week. Is Belichick the best coach in NFL history because the team he took to the Super Bowl this year is totally different than the ones in the past? The first 3 Super Bowls were all about their defense. The first against the Giants was more about their high powered offense. This one is more about offense. Who gets the credit? Brady? Belichick? Both? You have to give them both credit because they've been the constants and everything else has changed. |
