It's the same 'ol Chargers

Norv and GM AJ are coming back. They didn't even have a press conference, they posted this shit on their website. A squirrel has more balls than the Spanos. Fuckin ruined my day

Turner, Smith to return

Quote:
Turner, Smith to return
Posted 1 hour ago
a a San Diego Chargers Chairman of the Board & President Dean Spanos today officially ended speculation and confirmed that General Manager A.J. Smith and Head Coach Norv Turner will return in 2012.

“Bottom line, I believe these two men give us the best chance to get back to the playoffs,” Spanos said. “A.J. Smith is the best man to improve our roster, and Norv Turner is the best man to lead that roster on the field.

“Together, we have stability and experience that’s hard to find in the NFL. They’ve both been in this league a long time. I don’t think there is anything they haven’t seen or experienced. They’ve led us through some difficult situations.

“As we’ve seen throughout Norv’s tenure and particularly this past season, the players believe in him, respect him and play hard for him. When we went through that tough stretch, no one quit. The team kept playing hard, and that’s a tribute to Norv’s leadership and the respect the players have for him.

“Now we will take a hard look at everything, from player evaluation to coaching to the rash of injuries we’ve suffered in recent years. Injuries have killed us. And no one is ever perfect in this business. Player evaluation isn’t an exact science. We need to improve across the board and I’m going to make sure we do.

“We all have our quirks and faults, but I want A.J. and Norv on my side. They are the right men to help us win a championship.”

During Smith’s nine-year tenure as general manager (2003-11), the Chargers have won 88 games and five AFC West titles. Only three teams (New England, Indianapolis and Pittsburgh) have won more games or division titles during that time. During the three seasons prior to Smith’s appointment, the Chargers struggled to a 13-35 record. Smith’s 91 overall wins in nine seasons rank second in team history among general managers, just one win behind Sid Gilman’s 92 wins in 11 seasons.

Since Turner took over as head coach, he has earned an impressive 52-34 overall record (including 3-3 in the postseason), the highest overall winning percentage in franchise history (.605). Other impressive numbers during Turner’s tenure include San Diego’s record in December/January under Turner (21-3), record after Nov. 1 (32-12), and record versus the AFC West (21-9). Only six teams have won more playoff games during that time and only five teams have made more postseason appearances.

“Despite the number of wins we’ve had, the net bottom line is it doesn’t mean anything unless you win a championship,” Spanos said. “That’s our goal and I am committed to winning a Super Bowl for San Diego.”

I wonder who the next Charger will be to join the Saints and go from good to incredible. Y'all have any good coverage LBs you want to let walk in FA for nothing?

You guys need a receiver? Vincent Jackson will probably be coming your way soon. If you don't, since AJ Smith is still there, there will be plenty of good free agents he will let walk.

So, when do we start hearing the complaining from Chargers management that the stadium issue in San Diego needs to be addressed or they will start looking elsewhere? I mean, what better way to make sure there is no outcry of support to keep the team there, other than to completely alienate the fans into apathy?

I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing, unless you were going to drop Smith for Polian.

I don't know much about Polian, other than he didn't pick Ryan Leaf.

How does a team that grew frustrated with Schottenheimer, stick with Norv Turner?

It's all part of the Grand Spanos Plan to move the Chargers to his home town of Sacramento.

Oh and I don't think Spanos grew frustrated with Marty (my speculation). It was AJ Smith that didn't like him. John Butler brought Marty in, but, when he died, I think everyone knew Marty's days were numbered once AJ Smith took over. Unless he gets extremely luck in the draft, resigns key players and actually decided to play the free agent game, nothing much is going to change for the 2012 season.

My sentiments exactly. Hell, he fired Marty because he couldn't win in the playoffs. Turner can't even win the the regular season.

Do the Lions not have cheerleaders? If so, don't feel too bad. The Charger girls are a 'relatively' new thing for the Chargers. They didn't have cheerleaders for a long, long time.

The Bears don't have them either. I think that the Honey Bears went away in the 80s sometime. Virginia thought it too sexist. Of course, she also thinks that Lovie is a great coach so there ya go.

And I feel your pain Dodgerchick. The front office finally figured out that Jerry Angelo can't draft. The amazing thing is that the new GM has to fit with Lovie's philosophy. Huh? He doesn't get any blame for playing Caleb Haney for four games? Talk about job security for a coach who can't win. But I digress...

Interesting. I never checked but had been told the Lions were the only ones without them numerous times.

Yup, so many ex-Chargers doing well on other teams is sickening. Oh no, but wait... the Chargers were 1 play away from the playoffs God, if I hear that one more time, I'm gonna freaking scream

Face it, Dean Spanos is afraid of confrontation and that's why he couldn't fire 'em. Nut the hell up man, you're the owner of the San Diego Chargers do your damn job. But wait, he's busy raising money for Rick Perry... now there's a real winner

That's it right there. AJ Smith has probably mentioned some of his mafia 'friends' from Rhode Island to Dean a few times.

And I have nothing to add to the SD fans' reaction. I just enjoy seeing Philip Rivers (NC State's favorite son) waste away.

No, there are others, a half dozen or so.

On that note though - The Lions do have a group who is making waves (I've seen them on TV, internet, and radio numerous times). They're really trying to get their squad formalized.

Jealousy. Never thought I'd see that coming from a UNC fan. I will concede TJ Yates has some potential, though, unlike just about every other UNC QB...well...ever. (Oh, yeah...there was Ronald Curry...but he ended up a WR...and then there's...um...Mark Maye?...no...Deems May!...no...hey what about that Paulus kid...no?...)

Well I definitely won't be spending any money going to watch a game or two in person next season then.

Of course, for an owner whose goal is to move the team or extort a new stadium, that is probably a pretty desirable goal. Bring back the most unpopular HC and GM in the league, watch fan interest and attendance plummet and then go cry to the league about how disadvantaged you are in your barely old stadium

He's the kind of disciplinarian that the Chargers players need. Turner (once again) is just too soft. Why you would need motivation to play in the NFL is beyond me, but, apparently, many players need it. I don't think Norv could motivate two rabbits to procreate.
