Question Where can I find NFL statistical data?

I remember reading somewhere about the massive amount of NFL statistical data that JG studied and consumed when he developed the sim engine for FOF. While the little sim I am putting together should not need near the level of detail that Jim went to, I still need SOME information in order to obtain realistic results. Does anyone know of locations on the internet that I can find historical statistics for the NFL? My searches to date have been mostly fruitless.

Some examples of the types of things I am looking for include the following:

- Total tackles by defensive position per game or season
- Total sacks by defensive position per game or season
- Total receptions/yards/ypc by position per game or season
- Avg. rushing ypg for all starting running backs
- Avg. passing ypg for all starting QB's
etc, etc.

Can anyone help? Thanks yo

I like http://www.profootball-reference.com for historical data.

But it's probably not detailed enough for your needs beyond YPC and some QB stats....and it's definitely offensively oriented.

Big ups to the 1925 Dayton Triangles.

The way Jim gets his data (the same way I do) is that he gets all of the stats from play-by-plays. From what I understand, he programmed a little program to go through a play-by-play file and gather data that way.

profootball-reference has potential, but it still needs a lot of work IMO.

I've always been so fascinated with the Dayton Triangles. I even bought a throwback jersey last year. Cool stuff.

An interesting concept, but where do I find play-by-plays? I assume you are referring to play-by-plays of actual NFL games? Just to reiterate my question, I am searching for actual NFL statistical data from which to base my sim off of.

Yes, play-by-plays fo actual games. I'm not sure where Jim got his, but I got mine off of the NFL website. Unfortunatly, they don't have play-by-plays of previous seasons, but they still might have last years.

I would also suggest the NFL Record and Fact Books. They are a good rexource for stats IMO. You can probably buy last year and the year before versions on Amazon. For previous seasons, try EBay. I found several on there.

If anyone is interested, I ran across a GREAT website for NFL stats. They have box scores of every NFL game dating back 10 years!
