Video Game Collection (Help Wanted)

Most of us collect things and this one is mine. For the most part, I was trying to get quality games for the system but I have also had quite a few that were part of an ebay lot, etc.

We have a lot of gamers across different eras here and I'm looking for holes in my collection. For instance, when I was making my Sega Genesis list, I showed it to SackAttack and he pointed out that I was missing Mutant League Football. Similarly, I've had other people point out other games that my list would have been remiss without.

However, I'm trying, for the most part, to have quality not necessarily quantity. If I just wanted to have pure numbers, I could go rummage around every vintage store's sports bin but the idea is that I'm trying to play all of these games. For instance, I've played at least a few minutes of every NES, SNES, N64, and GB/GBC/GBA: Play the ones I don't like for a few minutes and play the ones I like for much longer.

So, I'm kindof trying to make one last push to finish out my "vintage" collection (btw, DS and Wii are current gen in my mind so there will be holes there and I don't have any PS3 or X360 yet). To you, loyal (and patient) readers, are there some quality games that I'm missing from some of your favorite systems listed?

I didn't see Warsong for the Sega Genesis. One of my favorite tactical strategy games of all time.

Not familiar with Warsong. Genghis Khan- I have seen that on a few lists. I guess it's time to look into it. For some reason, I was thinking it was fairly expensive but vg price charts has it at $9 so that's an easy enough pickup.

Amazon.com: Warsong: Video Games

One of the most underrated video games of all time, IMO. Not a lot of people have heard about it or played it, but one of the happiest video game purchase moments of my life was when I found it for $15 at Electronics Boutique in Gurnee Mills. It was damn difficult to find when it was new.

Not sure of your opinion on sports games (you do have some) but I loved Tony La Russa Baseball for the Genesis.

It's been in the making for quite a while. Some are from when I was a kid growing up and I've been pursuing the collection a little at a time for the last 15 years. I made a big push over the last year to fill in some gaps and that's where we find it now.

(A bunch of the Gamecube stuff is with my wife in her apartment as are some GBA games- so that's why you don't see all of them in there. I guess one could argue that part of this was as a substitute for us living in two separate states)

I always kinda liked the NES game Xenophobe. Not on your list and you can usually find it for like a dollar. Granted the arcade version was a little better. I can't remember why.
Still this version is passable and really a blast with 2 players.

I have a bunch of games for XBOX 1, ps2, ps1 and nintendo. Want em?

One of the best games for the Gamecube. I never beat it, tho. I had a save where my sanity was too low and I just could never get past that point or build some of my sanity back up.

That said, if you're saying that's all that's good on the Gamecube, it's just not true. The XBox was easily the weakest of the three platforms in terms of game library- it had Halo, KOTOR, and a couple of others but that's it. Now, granted, I went for it last from that generation so multiplatform games, I have for the GC and PS2- but the list of good exclusives from the Halobox is short.

EDIT: I think I could make a pretty good argument for the Dreamcast having a better library, even tho it only lasted a couple of years.

Nah I wasn't saying that, I just think that once I played that I didn't need to see another game on any other system hehehe
It was THE game!

For the Wii I'd say Resident Evil Wii and Mario Kart Wii were the main standouts for me.

XBOX, I totally agree. KOTOR and KOTOR 2 were all that is needed for that system. Sure HALO but I'm so sick of HALO. Liked the first one a lot but all the sequels were just not as entrancing and just old hat. The pretentious storyline just got too heavyhanded.

XOBX did have DOOM 3 and Thief 3 (Deadly Shadows) that were both PC crossovers. Exclusives too. I've always been a huge Thief fan so that game was pretty good. I'm currently playing through The Thing on XBOX actually. It's a "SEQUEL" to the Kurt Russell movie.

But I agrtee. XBoX never could hold a candle to ps2.

I had a massive collection of NES games when I was a kid. About 6 months after the SNES came out, my dad traded them all at a flea market for money to take to the horse races.

I was crushed.

NES - Super Dodge Ball and Tecmo Super Bowl (Unless thats what Tecmo Bowl actually is)

N64 - Rush 2 (For the stunt track alone)

Genesis - Beavis and Butthead was actually pretty good, way better than the SNES version for some reason.

Skitchin' was very good

I was going to say Langrisser 2, but apparently that is Warsong here in the U.S. That game is REALLY good.

NES:

Base Wars - A pretty fun baseball game where instead of tagging a runner out on the bases, robots would fight each other to determine whether the runner was out or if it could keep running. You could also win prize money in games and to spend upgrading your robot players' parts.

SNES:

Uniracers - One of my favorite SNES racing games, fun 1p or 2p. You controlled a unicycle on various side-scrolling courses, there were stunt tracks, doing stunts in the middle of normal races would give a speed boost, it was a lot of fun. Nintendo had to stop producing cartridges shortly after the game came out and it's never been released on the Virtual Console due to some lawsuit from Pixar, apparently the design of the unicycles were too close to ones in some short film years ago.

Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen - An RTS and RPG hybrid that I had never played until it came out on the Virtual Console a few years ago. Quite good imo.

Wii:

PES 20xx - I know sports titles that are updated yearly aren't really collection worthy. But you have pretty much all the games I like for Wii other than this. It has a cool control scheme, using the IR pointer to pass and direct off the ball runs from teammates. One of the better uses of the Wiimote and something I kind of miss when playing FIFA on PS3.

DS:

Dragon Quest V - Unless I went through the list too quickly, you have every DQ game released in North America except for this one, which happens to be my favorite. I think it has the best story in the series and some memorable characters. And it has the party talk that was cut out of the DQ4 port for DS. One of my all-time favorite games.

Dreamcast:

Virtua Tennis - A great sports game, especially in multiplayer. I got this during my freshman year of college and we'd have a lot of fun playing 4P games of this while pregaming for a night out. The sequel might be better, I haven't played it though.

Genesis version of Aladdin was better than SNES version IMO.

PlayStation - Tomba. Really hard to find game, but was a fun platformer type.

I'll second the Tecmo Super Bowl (NES) and Ogre Battle (SNES) thoughts. Sadly, Ogre Battle for the SNES is insanely hard to find. They made a re-release on Playstation, not sure how hard that is to find.

I have Tecmo Super Bowl on the SNES and just Tecmo Bowl on the NES.

Ogre Battle for the SNES was just too much for me to justify just as a couple of others for the SNES were knocked off my list (Harvest Moon, Castlevania: Dracula X). I have Ogre Battle 64, tho.

I have Base Wars and it's quality fun. It has some long oddball name, iirc. I also have Virtua Tennis but I haven't played it. Poor Dreamcast...

DQV is on my "to get" list for the DS but they released it in a really short print and it was going for $50-$70 for a while. They printed another run and it's down into the $25ish range and I'll run across a copy one day that I'll buy.

Tomba and Klonoa are a couple of PSX platformers that I ended up drawing the line on. I guess if I can find them for cheap, great, but unlikely. There are two categories that most of my "high end" stuff falls into. I have some oddballs from Nintendo (Electroplankton, Pokemon Box, Ikaruga on Gamecube since it was never released in the US on Dreamcast). And I have RPGs, particularly SNES and PSX- tho I had a lot of those when they initially came out or, for instance, some like Earthbound and complete copies of the Lunar games on PSX I got in college before the prices exploded. Like I said, I've been working on this for a while.

Speaking of oddball, the only big ticket item I'm still really after is a copy of Segagaga. For those unfamiliar, well, I love the idea even tho I've never played it and probably never will as it's only Japanese and was released at the end of the Dreamcast's life. Wiki has a good summary of it: "Segagaga's storyline parodies the commercially unsuccessful Dreamcast console - the player is recruited by Sega in a last-ditch effort to stop the evil DOGMA company from taking over the console market. The game, interspersed with animated cut scenes, features numerous cameos by Sega characters and games, as well as a variety of gameplay styles."

You can get one for $70 pretty easily on ebay but there's an awesome collectors edition with a t-shirt and little collector pins and some other silliness that goes for over $200. That's a collection capstone right there, but it really would only be worth it if I could play it

How in the world do you get so many games? Goodness me.

I guess there's always worse hobbies.

Like running a haunted winery

Seriously, tho, like I said- perseverance. I feel I have a pretty good appreciation for the history of video games and my "win-the-lottery dream job" would be to start and curate a History of Video Games museum*. As that one is unlikely to happen, I have a small slice of it in my home.

*I still don't get why this has never happened in somewhere like, say, Seattle. It should be easy enough to get sponsor money by being a giant advertisement for Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, and others. You have rooms for each of the major historical systems with museum information displays about each system and blowups with info about 10-30 major games on each system. In a part of each room, there's a lounge with a few systems where people can play said system (or some sort of virtual console setup like Nintendo on the Wii, etc) as well as a glassed in wall with one of every game for the system. There would be space to house famous memorabilia like old Nintendo hanafuda cards, one of the gold cartridges, etc. And you could have giant rooms for current systems where the current gaming system companies could set up what they want for ads and to allow playing. Again- how has this not happened? Wouldn't it be nearly as big a draw as the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame these days (and if not now, in 20 years)?

Yes, you need to try them both. Kind of the precursor to Civilization in a way. A little more focused to the time periods & China/Japan but very cool games especially for their time.

$50K does not a museum make. Also that looks vintage and stops at the Atari 2600. I would argue the "golden age" of gaming has happened since then

I remember renting one of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms games when I was younger but it was too complicated for me at the time

I count 1281 video games. That's 1281 more than I have. Amazing collection.

Being a cheap bastar-- frugal gamer helps. For instance, you notice that only the Wii and DS are "current generation" and even those have quite a few holes. For instance, Donkey Kong Country will definitely be there but I have yet to see it under $25.

It's a lot easier to bulk up a collection by going to Disc Replay and dropping $50 on 25 NES/SNES/N64/Genesis games than going and getting one new one at that rate. So, once the regular price for PS3 and X360 games drop toward the end of the generation and I can go pick them up at $20 or less on Gamestop B2G1 sales or find them for $10 or less apiece, I'll start hitting that collection hard. But that way, I can get a whole system's games for under $500 rather than only getting a fraction for that. So, you aggregate out $500 over the course of a 5+ year release cycle and that's not so bad. Even if you are trying to buy for 3 systems, that's only $300 a year or, as the "must have it when it comes out" gamers call it- 5 per year.

There are still some things I get at release like Pokemon, for instance, or games with great pre-release bonuses. I used to worry about or games that are likely to only nudge slightly downwards in price before shooting back up, but that's really rare now.

See I would rate KOEI's NES historical grand strategy games like this:

Genghis Khan
Romance of the Three Kingdoms
L'Empereur (sp)
Bandit Kings of Ancient China (which I've only been able to play via emulator, sadly)
Nobunaga's Ambition

Oh oh oh oh!!!

That reminds me.

Did you have Uncharted Waters or Uncharted Waters II for the SNES?

If not, I'd put those on there. Best.sea.exploration.game.ever.

Very Impressive. Does you NES work without having to use all kinds of tricks to get it going?

A couple I dont think I seen on your list
NES
Baseball Stars 2
Mighty Bombjack

Mighty Bomb Jack - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I cant remember the system but I thought Tecmo Bowl 2 was a great game. I was thinking Sega.

I see you have RBI baseball but the sequel was better. The hitters didnt look 400 pounds and it had every team.

On NES -- Genghis Khan -- fantastic game. There was another game by KOEI about the American Revolution on NES but the name escapes me.

I've seen Uncharted Waters for sale around town at Disc Replay- it's one of those in the $20 range. Didn't know anything about it.

I should add a historical strategy game for the NES- and I should figure out which one. Sounds like Genghis Kahn is a leading candidate

You know it can be had for under $10 on ebay or Amazon, right?

I picked it up from a roommate of mine when he got rid of his old games about 10 years ago.
