Pitcher of the Month Named in CL

Sunday, May 1st, 2072: Juan Jose Cerda has been around the league long enough to know that relievers are often overlooked. That has never stopped him from doing what he does best -- and he did it extremely well in April and stole away with the Continental League Pitcher of the Month award.

The Terriers bullpen ace collected 6 saves and 24 strikeouts in 18.1 innings, holding the opposition to a .111 average and posting a 0.49 ERA and a 3-0 record.

St Louis's Rosas Shines, Shuts out St Cloud
Monday, May 2nd, 2072: Emílio Rosas put a hex on St Cloud in a sparkling 7-0 shutout performance, mesmerizing them on a 2-hit gem.

"I feel good physically," he said. "Everything's comfortable. You should pitch well when that's the case."

It was anything but comfortable for St Cloud.

"Rosas used his changeup very well, very effectively," the opposing manager said. "He threw it in hitter's counts."

The St Louis Hops hurler fanned 7 and walked 1.

Season-to-date Rosas has rung up 3 wins and 1 loss in 6 appearances. He has an ERA of 2.75 and has fanned 26 batters in 39.1 innings.

Reese Hitless, Streak Ends at 36
Monday, May 30th, 2072: The Cleveland Naps did something to Elvis Reese no team had done for the last 36 games -- they held him hitless and stopped his consecutive-game hitting streak. But they didn't stop the Wolverines. Ann Arbor came away with a 5-4 victory at Ballpark of Cleveland.

Commenting on the demise of the streak, the 33-year-old left fielder told BNN, "Hey, I knew it wasn't going to last forever, but it was a good ride while it lasted."

This year Reese is batting .359 with 2 home runs. He has scored 51 runs and driven in 19.

Reese's 36 game hit streak appears to be the longest in FOOL-X since Spring's Bartolo Cortez hit in 36 straight 34 seasons ago!

Wednesday, June 1st, 2072: When guys like Ann Arbor's Elvis Reese win Batter of the Month awards, it just makes you feel good. In a productive May, the longtime Republic League veteran toyed with opposing pitchers all month long, collecting 45 hits in 114 at-bats.

Vélez Takes Best Bat Award in May
Wednesday, June 1st, 2072: Pedro Vélez battered Continental League pitchers all May and wound up taking home the Batter of the Month Award.

"I've been around FOOL-X long enough to know you really have to work hard day in and day out to be able to put up this kind of consistency," the 30-year-old Vélez told reporters. "I put in a lot of work, even on the days I might not take the field, and it's always nice when everything comes together for me like it did this last month."

RL Selects Rookie Star of the Month
Wednesday, June 1st, 2072: Ron Tolbert earned May's Rookie of the Month honors in the Republic League for last month's performance. The boyish Ann Arbor first baseman might be wet behind the ears, but he's proving that he has what it takes to play at this level.

Tolbert hit .305 with 4 home runs, 14 RBIs and 10 runs scored this past month on his way to winning the award.

In his season totals Tolbert has 5 home runs and a .254 batting average.

Continental League Names Rookie of Month
Wednesday, June 1st, 2072: Robinson Salinas was toddling around on his tricycle when some of the guys he's playing against were in their prime, but the 22-year-old first baseman definitely knows how to get to first, second or beyond. Today he was chosen May's Continental League Rookie of the Month for his remarkable month of hitting.

In 27 games Salinas batted .311 for Plantana, slapping 28 hits in 90 at-bats with no home runs, drove in 11 runs and scored 9 times.

This season Salinas is swinging the bat at a .285 rate with 45 hits in 158 at-bats. To date he has hit no home runs, scored 18 runs and driven in 21.

Stanley Jackson Winner in June
Friday, July 1st, 2072: June's Republic League Batter of the Month trophy was claimed by center fielder Stanley Jackson of the Ann Arbor Wolverines.

Last month he compiled a .356 batting average with 2 home runs, 15 RBIs, 17 runs scored and a .462 on-base percentage.

To date this year Jackson is batting .374 with 5 home runs.

London's Goyer CL #1 Batter in June

Friday, July 1st, 2072: Scott Goyer received the Continental League Batter of the Month trophy earlier today for his efforts at the plate this last month.

"He might be getting older," London's manager told reporters, "But he's been around long enough to know what it takes to put a stretch such as this together... and he doesn't keep that to himself. He's always talking to the younger guys in the clubhouse helping 'em any way they'll let him. Scott's value to our team goes farther than the numbers he puts up on the field."

To win the honor Goyer put up a .309 batting average, 6 home runs, 23 RBIs and scored 21 times in June.

Posting a .309 batting average to date, Goyer has 15 home runs and 55 RBIs.

Stafford Blanked by Morales
Friday, July 8th, 2072: Jesús Morales was dynamite today and just blew Stafford away in the 4-0 victory. The Washington Freedom starter had everything working as he hurled a 3-hit shutout over the Terriers, recording 12 strikeouts and 1 walk.

"He was pure nasty out there today. I don't think any team in the league would've had a chance against what he was bringing," said the Stafford skipper during his postgame press conference.

In 18 starts this season Morales has chalked up a 12-3 record and a 3.47 ERA.

July's Pitcher of the Month Goes to Ono
Monday, August 1st, 2072: When Yukinaga Ono takes the mound, a London victory is usually the result. At least that's the way it was in July.

He threw 14 innings over 13 relief appearances and collected a 1-0 record with 14 strikeouts and 12 saves while etching his 0.00 ERA.

This year his season stats show Pineda has 37 saves in 51 relief appearances with a 3-3 mark and 0.78 ERA.

July's Pitcher of the Month Goes to Ono
Monday, August 1st, 2072: When Yukinaga Ono takes the mound, a London victory is usually the result. At least that's the way it was in July.

He excelled with a 4-0 mark and a 0.52 ERA in 5 starts, tossed 34.1 innings, fanned 38 and held opposing batters to a .157 average.

That's why the Bishops starter was honored today as the Pitcher of the Month by the Continental League.

On the season Ono has compiled a 9-3 mark with a 2.42 ERA in 21 starts. In pitching 133.2 innings he has 133 strikeouts and 20 walks while limiting the opposition to a .217 batting average.

What is the record for most saves in a season? And how the heck did Pineda not make the AS team?

Kouyama at His Best, Whips Wildcats
Friday, August 12th, 2072: Relying on pinpoint control and a good array of pitches, Masuhiro Kouyama of the Ann Arbor Wolverines held the Las Vegas Wildcats scoreless today. He scattered 2 hits over 9 innings and fanned 9 on his way to the 4-0 victory.

Currently Kouyama has a 6-10 won-lost record in 28 starts with a 3.53 ERA. He also has 101 strikeouts in 163.1 innings.

We could definitely see that record fall this year.

No-Hitter for Hendrix
Sunday, August 14th, 2072: Excitement reigned at the ballyard today as St Louis hurler David Hendrix tossed a baseball rarity -- a no-hitter.

After defeating the Havana Banana Sluggers at The Brewery 8-0 he was swamped by reporters in the clubhouse for postgame comments. "I'm just glad to be here. I want to help the club any way I can. Today I just went right at the Havana as hard as I could, as long as I could."

Hendrix chalked up 10 strikeouts and allowed 2 walks in his superb performance.

The St Louis manager had his own analysis of the ballgame: "I don't think we could have hit him with a howitzer today."

This season Hendrix has a 5-11 record with a 5.88 ERA.

Hendrix is the first St. Louis pitcher to throw a no-hitter in 9 seasons
