Magana Cops 300th Save, Napa Valley Tops Cyclones 6-4

"When I pitch, it usually means we have a chance to win the ballgame, so I have to always be at my best for the team to win," the 36-year-old reliever said after stopping the Cyclones on no runs and no hits in his 1 innings of work.

Toronto's Battle RL Top Pitcher
Friday, May 1st, 2133: When Clyde Battle takes the mound, a Toronto victory is usually the result. That was the the case in April.

That's why he was voted the Republic League Pitcher of the Month.

Battle throttled league hitters the whole month with an impressive 5-0 mark and 2.18 ERA in 5 starts. The Marlboros star hurler also rung up 22 strikeouts in 41.1 innings.

Kishita Snags RL Batting Honor in April
Friday, May 1st, 2133: To survive in the bigs, you've got to be a scrapper like Goro Kishita. It never pays to take a day off from the batting cages or to shrug off the advice of the hitting coach. It all paid off today as Toronto's center fielder pinned down the Republic League Batter of the Month trophy today.

He hit .430 in April collecting 9 home runs, 24 RBIs and 31 runs scored.

CL Honors Cornock, #1 Batter in April
Friday, May 1st, 2133: Tokyo's Daryl Cornock had a productive April and topped it off by winning the Batter of the Month citation from the Continental League.

The 28-year-old right fielder stood out at the plate with a .396 batting average, 5 home runs, 18 RBIs and 17 runs scored.

Republic League Names Rookie of Month
Friday, May 1st, 2133: José González is still a bit shy, but then, who could blame the newest Republic League Rookie of the Month honoree? He hasn't been around the league long enough to fully know the ropes yet, despite the fact that he's putting up veteran-like numbers.

In April the Chico hitter tagged opposing pitching for a .385 average with 42 hits, 5 home runs and 24 RBIs.

Anderson Voted April's #1 Newcomer
Friday, May 1st, 2133: Fred Anderson of the Apex Assassins went on a month-long hitting streak against Continental League pitching and hauled in the Rookie of the Month award for April.

He batted .326 and collected 28 hits, 2 home runs, 16 RBIs and scored 9 runs.

Mathis Launches Number 300
Tuesday, May 12th, 2133: Christian Mathis circled the bases and raised his arm in triumph. He had finally hit his 300th home run. It was a homer for a lot of people: himself; his teammates past and present; his former managers and coaches; and especially his family, who sat near the plate cheering his every at-bat during the past few games.

Mathis spoke with BNN and said, "I knew number 300 would come sooner or later. I had to keep reminding myself, 'Relax, relax, just let it happen, let it happen.' And it finally did."

His milestone homer came in the Hartford Harpooners 6-1 win over the Chico Rebels. Mathis went 2 for 3 in the game, scored 2 runs, and batted in 2.

Mathis has a career .293 batting average and .382 on-base percentage. He has recorded 1440 hits with 162 doubles, 7 triples, 301 homers, 919 RBIs and scored 821 runs since coming into the league.

Banfield Shuts out Hartford
Monday, May 18th, 2133: Before the game Howard Banfield liked his chances and his instincts proved to be right. In a superb outing the Winged Lingerines pitcher whitewashed the Hartford Harpooners 3-0.

Banfield said in the clubhouse afterward, "I just had a feeling it was going to be my day. My control was awesome. I could throw my curveball even when I was behind in the count."

The Ann Arbor starter held Hartford scoreless, giving up 5 hits while registering 12 strikeouts and issuing no walks.

"We didn't have very many good at-bats," the Harpooners manager said in his postgame interview.

"When that happens, you usually lose."

This year Banfield has gone 6-2 with an ERA of 3.66 and has 42 strikeouts in 64 innings.

RL Picks June's Top Pitcher
Wednesday, July 1st, 2133: A standout performance in June earned Derek Henry the Pitcher of the Month Award in the Republic League. When his name was penciled in to start by the Chico skipper, it meant trouble for opposing teams. For the month the Rebels star racked up 4 wins and no losses.

In 33.1 innings of work, Henry limited opposing batters to 22 base hits and a .188 batting average. He notched 21 strikeouts, issued 16 walks and had a 3.51 ERA.

So far this year Henry has compiled a 6-5 record with a 6.21 ERA.

Cyclones Reliever Cops Pitching Award
Wednesday, July 1st, 2133: Santiago Díaz has been around the league long enough to know that relievers are often overlooked. That has never stopped him from doing what he does best -- and he did it extremely well in June and stole away with the Continental League Pitcher of the Month award.

The Cyclones bullpen ace collected 7 saves and 16 strikeouts in 11.1 innings, holding the opposition to a .171 average and posting a 1.59 ERA and a 3-0 record.

This season Díaz has logged 30 relief appearances, 32 IP, 42 strikeouts, and a 4.22 ERA. His W-L mark is 3 wins and 2 losses, and he has 17 saves.

RL's Top Hitter Selected
Wednesday, July 1st, 2133: Free agent-to-be Goro Kishita has inflated his asking price over the past 30 days by winning the Republic League Batter of the Month.

In June, the 36-year-old Toronto center fielder hit .398 with 8 home runs and 23 RBIs.

If he keeps putting numbers like that up, he could be hauling in a big wad of cash at this time next year.

Thus far in 2133 Kishita is hitting .387 with 23 home runs, 73 RBIs, 80 runs scored and has compiled a .468 OBP.

Puddy Gets CL Batter of the Month Trophy
Wednesday, July 1st, 2133: Ryan Puddy let his bat do the talking in June and the Continental League heard him loud and clear. He made plenty of noise as he put together a .384 batting average and was named the top hitter of the month.

Puddy's month to remember saw him accumulate 38 hits, 1 home run, 13 runs batted in, 29 runs, 15 walks and a .508 on-base percentage.

Currently Puddy is hitting .319 and has collected 3 home runs, 29 RBIs and scored 62 times, while playing in 76 games.

June's Premier Rookie Named by RL
Wednesday, July 1st, 2133: A veritable toddler to the Republic League, José González just sewed up the Rookie of the Month trophy for June.

Over the past month the 24-year-old first baseman for Chico hit .440 with 44 hits, 1 home run and 19 RBI. He also logged 20 walks and compiled a .545 on-base percentage.

Currently González is batting .397 with 10 home runs, 69 RBIs and 69 runs scored.

Red-Hot Rookie Rewarded in June
Wednesday, July 1st, 2133: Youngster Jeff Corbin emerged as the latest Continental League Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Baltimore deserved the honor, batting .316 with 1 home run and 15 runs batted in. Is the month of June a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Corbin enjoy the limelight.

For the season Corbin has hit .306 with 2 home runs and 35 RBIs. He has played in 69 games and scored 22 times.

In the clubhouse, the Cyclones shortstop spoke about the milestone achievement. "To be honest, I don't even remember my first home run," he said. "But this one I don't think I'll forget. Who knows if I'll hit another hundred, or fifty, or even ten?"

Yes, It's a No-No by Fitter
Wednesday, July 22nd, 2133: Shane Fitter of the Winter Wolves was standing behind the mound when the scoreboard caught his eye, confirming what he already knew... he was one out from a no-hitter. He froze... for a couple of seconds he didn't move.

"This hitter is the last one," Fitter told himself. Then he collected himself and finished one of his greatest performances ever.

The Halifax hurler no-hit the Apex Assassins 7-0 at Howler Meadow, finishing with 2 walks and 12 strikeouts, facing only 28 batters.

Fitter admitted to the press, "I knew from the fifth inning on it was a no-hitter, but really didn't worry about it until the last out. I just wanted to win the game until then... then I wanted the no-hitter, too."

Fitter has a 4-12 season record so far. In 19 starts, he has fanned 84 batters in 100 innings with a 6.66 ERA.

Yes, that is right. A 4-12 pitcher with an ERA over 6 throws a no-hitter!

There have been only 3 hitters in FOOL history that recorded a .400 season. Both Gonzalez and Arriaga are threatening this year though.

RL's Top Hitter Announced
Thursday, October 1st, 2133: Roberto Betacourt was declared the Republic League Batter of the Month today. Colorado's first baseman stroked 31 hits in 90 at-bats for a .344 average in September.

CL's Premier Batter Picked
Thursday, October 1st, 2133: There's nothing like putting up good, solid numbers in the last year of your contract. Today Daryl Cornock helped his contract negotiations by nabbing September's Continental League Batter of the Month honors.

The Tokyo right fielder put together a .302 batting average with 6 home runs, 23 RBIs and 16 runs scored.

Someone will surely be opening up the vault this offseason if Cornock continues at this brisk pace.

Currently Cornock is hitting .333 and has collected 25 home runs, 104 RBIs and scored 105 times, while playing in 152 games.
