FOOL 2130 Offseason Thread

For those that missed it in the other thread, please welcome back Mckorski and ShoelessJ03 to the league!

Mckorski is taking back over control of his old team Ann Arbor Winged Ligerines (Mckorski was previously known as allpro)

Shoelessj03 is taking control of Los Angeles Bruins.

Mattcubs stepped down from Ann Arbor but is not leaving the league. He is rumored the top candidate for a new position to be announced in about a week or two!

Hmm.. looks like the old way I used to pull in the Best Fielders won't work in OOTP12... So this year is a surprise, you will have to go look to see who won. I'll figure something different out for next year

One of the additions in OOTP12, is you will see stats like this pop up in your "Newspaper" in-game. They happen too often for me to post them all here. So I'll leave these for those that enjoy reading through the in-game file. Here is an example of one that came up this sim:

BNN Stats: Active Career Pitching Leaders

Monday, November 21st, 2129: Which active pitchers are leading the Front Office Offseason League in career strikeouts?

Mario Gómez, TOK, 3362
Matt King, NVY-AAA, 2400
Pedro Lugo, TOK, 2300
Seth Turpin, LAN, 1971
Esteban Lizaraga, -, 1930

Also, something to keep an eye out for this upcoming sim. The international free agents have entered the pool. We get three of them every season and sometimes they are pretty decent, other times not as much.

Best one this year is Israel Segona (as far as i can tell. Haven't found the other two yet). He is a good hitting/poor fielding 2B from Cuba.

You don't have to look anywhere special for the international free agents. They are just in the FA pool along with everyone else you may be bidding on.

Ok, new file is up! The files will be smaller now than in the past. This file was only 3.78MB in size, which should help make your downloads quicker in this version.

Tomorrow is Free Agency sim. Nothing special than previous versions of OOTP. Just bid on the players you want and remember we still have free agent compensation turned on.

If you encounter problems or see anything weird, please let me know so I can look at it!

So here is what I did now. I deleted the fool.lg folder and updated on the main screen. It downloaded successfully but upon opening the game somehow the league date is incorrect. And here is what it looks like when I try to download a new league date inside the game

Eddie, are you by chance behind some kind of proxy or something when you connect? Just trying to figure out why you seem to be having issues with this new download. It uses HTTP instead of FTP, so if you have a proxied connection, I wonder if it is caching it somehow.

What type of connection do you have for your computer (wired/wireless) and what type of ISP do you use?

I sent you a PM with a work around for now. It should at least let you keep exporting while we figure out your problem. (I don't want to slow down the sims right now unless we absolutely need to).

Is it possible for you to try on wired connection and see if you see the same thing? I doubt that is the problem, I am thinking something is caching your web connections (to speed things up), but it is also causing problems with the ISP proxy not giving you the current updated information.

Reading through technical forums, this seems to be a common issue with comcast HSI for people hitting web sites that have constant content updates.

Trying to not get too technical here, even though your system is not set up to use a proxy, Comcast appears to send all traffic meant for web servers through proxies that they have automatically. These proxies allow them to monitor traffic for purposes of your TOS, but also allow them to cache content to try to help improve download performance for its users.

OOTP uses HTTP to download league file updates. Your OOTP on your computer saw there was an update and went to download it, but the comcast web cache appeared to give you the old version of it. That is why your game updated the version, but the content and game date was still old.

I don't know how long comcast caches this information, but it shouldn't be more than a few hours I would hope (or it would be a really really poor design on their part). So your options would likely be one of the following:

1) Try not to download the new file too quickly after last time. (ie: if you downloaded it this morning, don't download it again only 3 hours later). Wait till later in the day to try it perhaps.
2) Use a free internet proxy for your system to tunnel all traffic through. I don't personally know if OOTP pays attention to system proxy settings or not, so we would have to experiment some with that.

I guess if you wanted more information, you could likely call or write your ISP for help on the issue. Explain to them that you have web content that gets updated regularly and you are having a problem with old content still being displayed. You likely want to use the term web content instead of game, or it would confuse them. The first level of support there might still not be very helpful or understand what you mean though. I'm not a comcast user myself or I would call to try to figure out how to work around this.

In the mean time, I can try to upload the bare-bones files for you to make sure you can work, but I am hopeful we can figure out another way this can work for you without having to do that.

Think we have found a bug in the game, unless injuries were not turned off yet. On the news page it says Jackson James fell down stairs and is out for two months, but he is not listed as injured (nor should he be with injuries off).

That is because storylines was accidentally left on. I turned it off when I saw it earlier too.

The new file is up!

Tomorrow morning we will sim the amateur draft and spring training.

Something new in OOTP12 is during this sim as well. This is the only sim that you can set your team's player development budget for the season. To do so, go into Front Office -> Player Development tab

This money that you will spend on this comes from your cash/budget. It does not affect your salary cap directly at all. So you can spend $65mil on salary and another $5 mil on this for instance. However if your team does not make enough money to cover it, you could go into a negative balance for next year meaning less money for either salaries or player development.

So you have to choose where you want to spend your money.

No luck Alan same errors as before. I put a call into Comcast yesterday and they said they'd forward it to Level 2. I know I have proxy preferences on my MAC but it looks like it asks for information that I have no idea what I should put in. Off to Church and maybe we can get this figured out sooner or later.

What I'm seeing here is we have a 65 million budget total. 62 payroll, 5 million draft expenses, and 2.2 mil for player development. It's telling me that since i'll be overbudget, I don't have 5 million to spend on player development, despite having cash. We are only allowed to spend 2.2 on player development.

Is this how it is supposed to work? as the draft expenses is a number we really have no control over.

Yeah, I see what you mean there. I don't recall seeing that in the testing before. I double checked and advanced draft signing features is turned off, so I am not sure why the $5mil number is in there. Looking through the league though, every team has the same issue with the negative projective balance thanks to that draft budget plus the game doesn't consider cash on hand there.

For now, teams shouldn't mess with the player dev budget then unless they want to decrease it. Lets just leave it as is, and if the same thing pops up next offseason, I'll modify the financials to give each team more money in revenue to cover for the draft budget being figured in there. I have to think about how to balance it so it doesn't mean more cash on hand though as well.

Speaking as an outsider (you know, since I'm not in FOOL ), the budget is 65 million TOTAL, yes.

The draft expenses still happen whether advance negotiations is on or not, so no, you don't really have any control over it.

Hmm.. I think I have an idea of something to try to fix Eddie's comcast issue with the league file. I don't want to do it on this file since it is the regular season sim tomorrow. I have a work around for Eddie for now, but I'm going to play with the file after the playoff sim to see if I can trick Comcast's proxy servers to stop being punks.

Both sound about right.

I guess the good thing about sucking so bad though is that I didn't build the team to be this way. haha

So, when I turn this F into a C (championship), I'll have that to remember.
