Gary Grigsby's War in the East

I haven't gotten an old fashioned hex grid war game in a while. I remember there was a thread on the board about Grigsby's Pacific game. That one scared me away with the size (and I don't think I had a good machine at the time that may have worked well enough with it).

Has anyone given this game a try?

I've just been playing some of the "Road to..." scenarios in WitE, but I've been enjoying it. I'd say that WitE is right where I like my wargames (somewhere in between War in the Pacific and Hearts of Iron). The scope of the Pacific game scared me away too, BTW.

I'll probably give the 1941 grand campaign a try pretty soon. I believe the developers are trying to iron out some balance issues for the '41 blizzard with a patch sometime in April, but the game as a whole seems to be very playable. The AI (especially for the Soviets) has been pretty decent since the initial launch.

Just in case anyone doesn't know, Bruce Geryk is doing some War in the East game diaries over at Quarter to Three.

I find it less complex than WitP, and more enjoyable because of that (it's still a hardcore wargame, not for everybody).

I even created a flag graphical mod for it when it was released.

Quarter to Three is a great site. It's been on my list since it started up.

I just picked it up. Can't believe I shelled out that much for a game, but I expect it will hold my interest for a long, long time (and I might even learn something)
