X-COM II: The Earth's Revenge (Part VI)

Welcome to Part Six of X-COM II: The Earth’s Revenge!

After a four-month break, the story continues. Quite a bit of the history segment here is the same as in part V, as we only progressed about three weeks past that date in thread five...

The History to Date
Despite strong performances on the battlefield during the first half-year of the X-COM II campaign, by mid-July human resistance against the alien horde was losing strength. The sheer numbers of UFOs were overwhelming our forces. Without strong fighter aircraft to take out the larger UFOs, X-COM had been limited to engaging only smaller ships in the air, and hoping to strike fast in attacking larger ones while they were on the ground. It was a strategy with mixed results. In short, too many UFOs were successfully completing their missions, and although X-COM had been winning the battles they fought, they had not been fighting enough of them. By early July, a bad situation was turning into a worse one: the enemy had established French and British controlled bases, and were able to convince the governments of those nations to betray their fellow human beings for the promises of the alien vision of the universe. There were rumors of back-room negotiations between other governments and the aliens, and the general tide of the campaign was swinging heavily in the aliens' favor.

But in late July, X-COM hatched a desperate yet bold plan to strike a retaliatory blow at the alien invaders. Code named Operation Turning Point, X-COM strung together a series of missions aimed at eliminating one of the two enemy bases. In the early hours of July 30th, the culminating assault was launched on the aliens’ British base in Norway. In the bloodiest battle of the war to date, X-COM forces earned their greatest victory, neutralizing the base and capturing key alien commanders. In terms of objectives the mission was a total success; but the price was severe: nearly half of the hand-picked, highly trained Alien Base Attack Force was killed in action.

The timing of the attack—one day before the UN monthly evaluation—could not have been better. The UN member nations were delighted at the news, the people of the world were delirious with hope, and in a sweep of joyous gratitude, the UN increased funding for X-COM operations. Infused with cash to cover at least the next month’s operations, X-COM immediately broke ground on a South American base, code named SAM COM, and scheduled to begin minimal operations by early September.

But the joy was short lived. Within 24 hours, aliens attacked Bogota, Columbia in retaliation, and over the course of the next three weeks the earth’s skies were inundated with UFOs, many of them scout ships vigorously hunting for signs of our European base. The flurry of activity made it clear that the alien base attack was not so much a stunning victory as a whack to the hornet’s nest. X-COM was now faced with a lethal and furious enemy seeking revenge for the loss of one of its bases. Adding to the sense of dismay on Earth, a new breed of alien, Ethereals, was spotted in some of the intense fire-fights of August. Faster and more intelligent than anything X-COM had encountered to date, these new aliens possessed PSI-abilities far more advanced than Sectoids. With X-COM forces still only on the verge of understanding the subtleties of PSI-combat, these foes pose the deadliest of threats.

It is here where we resume our story. The date is August 25; the time 12 noon. The aliens have just committed forces to what many pundits say is their most audacious strike in the eight-month-old war: a broad daylight terror attack on Berlin, Germany. Until now, the aliens have attempted to strike at night, when their superior night vision gives them strong advantages over X-COM agents. But this mission, touching off at precisely 12 noon, sends a clear message to X-COM command that the aliens feel they have the upper hand.

As to whether the X-COM story will be one of victory or defeat, well, only the future holds that answer. To find it we must drive on, slogging our way through tiny missions that will add up to either the earth’s survival or its destruction—each action, each shot, each mission, a tiny step towards one of those two outcomes.

The story continues...

By way of explanation
This "dynasty" is a participatory story using the Microprose game X-COM: UFO Defense. If you'd like to sign up, please just post here or in the sign-up thread and let me know. You don't need to know anything about the game, basically you just read along and post comments as you like, although at times there are decisions to be made where input is requested. In almost all of those cases, you don't need to know anything about the game to make an equally bad decision as I usually do.

August 25 (High Noon)
The UN hotline rings with some of the most stunning news we have had in our eight-month campaign: Aliens are terrorizing Berlin in broad daylight!!!

Since we attacked their base, the aliens have been like a rattled bee hive: the number of UFOs sightings has tripled this past month. But always, always, they have begun terrorizing cities when it's dark, and we have attacked to catch them at dawn. Never, until today, have they attacked in broad daylight. This current attack, coming at precisely 12 noon local time, is their most brazen ploy yet. Clearly it is designed to show the world that the alien infestation is gaining strength, and that we have accomplished little by eliminating one of their bases.

Clearly, we must meet force with force.

Ten minutes after the hotline rings, the EU COM Skyranger is airborne for Berlin. Inside are the following ten men...

Our men:
Daimyo II, Shorty, Mr. Bug III, Raven Hawk, Illinifan IV, Chief Rum II, Achilles, Lokugh, Blade II, AStott.

Apparently Blade II forgot to grab the Chinese food. It gets left behind, on a workbench near the launch bay.

GB, I think you missed my son's request to be transfered into the X-Com Ground Pounders.

Toss him into the on call force if need be. He wants some toe to toe action.

Coffee: Whooops. Yup, you're right. The on-call list here is old. I'll nuke this one, then insert the new one after the current mission.

With Coffee Warlord II getting transferred to regular agents that will leave the US Interceptor position open, if anyone on the waiting list wants it. Also, if Capn Morgan and/or Toddiec IV don't report back in by the 24th, their Interceptor jobs will be available to anyone on the waiting list as well.

I imagine we'll have a radio call from the Skyranger pilot soon...

Well, it’s reassuring to see that our Skyranger pilots have not lost much of their ability to give precise combat reports. This just in…

Skyanger Transmission

EU Skyranger to X-COM base. Repeat, EU Skyranger to X-COM base. Battle report from EU Skyranger to X-COM base. Transmitting official report, like, now…

Ahem. I was listening to Captain Shorty a while ago and he said “Aaargh!” He didn’t sound too happy, but then he was like, all excited and stuff, and said, “Holy shit! I’m alive!” But then he said “Aaargh!” again a little while after that and I haven’t heard him say nothing since. I keep going “Helloooooo, Shorty?” but all I get is this hissing sound on his line. Is that bad? Matter of fact, a lot of the lines to the men are doing that hissing sound now. Shouldn’t they be able to talk to me? Did we, like, forget to pay our phone bill or something? And this one is real strange, too: some of the men keep saying that they see “a cereal”, or something like that. Does that make any sense to you? I mean, what are they fighting, like, Cheerios out there? Ha! Get it? And since when did our men learn to speak like aliens? Lokugh and Blade II both were speaking, like, this funky lingo that reminded me of Jessica in The Exorcist, except it wasn’t English, you know? Is that like our secret code? How come no one told me about that? Sure was a lot of screaming after that happened though. Wow. You ever see The Exorcist by the way? That was so cool, when she spins her head around and vomits, like, a stream of goo all over the priest. I was, like, so scared when that hap—
(X-COM base terminates transmission)

As my son's parting gift from the X-Com Air Force, he will be setting a satchel charge inside the Skyranger cockpit. Any attempt to use the radio will result in the entire boat exploding.

Why does everything have to be so complicated?!?! (Avril reference) as long as it isn't Kennedy from MTV.

btw it's Regan, not Jessica in the Exorcist...bar none the best scene is the spiderwalk down the stairs...I'd start believing in Christ if I saw that

47th Mission: Battle of Berlin!

The EU Skyranger rockets through cloudless afternoon sky towards Berlin and the alien-infested terror site that awaits there. A silent, serious mood hangs over the interior of the craft. Shaking off their cryogenic sluggishness, the ten men inside go over weapon systems, check supplies, and only occasionally offer a word of encouragement to each other. Each man resides in a private world, thinking about the battle that lies ahead, trying to push aside the fear that wells up, yet all the while wondering if this will be the last day of his life.

Captain Shorty is leading the mission, but most of EU’s best are on board the craft. Raven Hawk, his hands shaking and his eyes burning holes in a medikit attached to a rack in the Skyranger, will be second in command.

Good luck, men!

The men are arranged as follows:

Left Side:
1. Daimyo II (Heavy Plasma, Power Suit)
2. Shorty (Heavy Plasma, Power Suit)
3. Mr. Bug III (Blaster Launcher, Heavy Plasma, Power Suit)
4. Raven Hawk (Heavy Plasma, Power Suit)
5. Illinifan IV (Heavy Plasma, Power Suit)

Right Side
1. Chief Rum II (Heavy Plasma, Power Suit)
2. Achilles (Heavy Plasma, Power Suit)
3. Lokugh (Heavy Plasma, Power Suit)
4. Blade II (Heavy Plasma, Power Suit)
5. AStott (Heavy Plasma, Power Suit)

The Skyranger begins its descent to the German capital on this sparkling afternoon day. We can’t see too much of the alien-occupied area as we come down: our pilot is putting us down on a grassy area on the northeast corner of the hot zone, so the areas at the Skyranger exit and to the right of the Skyranger exit are secure. To the left rear of the Skyranger exit, however, we can see a small house, and immediately to the left of our exit is the eastern edge of a medium-size, roofed shopping complex. At the nose of the Skyranger, there is a road running perpendicular to our Skyranger. Across the street we can just make out a small park. Not much cover as we exit the Skyranger, but all in all it might not be a bad position.

Our Skyranger touches lightly down in the grassy area, the exit ramp falls outward, and we are greeted with an eerie silence.

Our tank begins to exit the Skyranger, gets two feet onto the ramp, and the outside of the Skyranger erupts in a hail of plasma blasts coming from our left. Plasma streams slam into the side of our Skyranger; two blasts nail the tank and badly damage it. Other plasma blasts streak by the opening in flashes of red death. Our damaged tank drives on under this barrage, makes it to the bottom of the ramp, swivels left, and spots three aliens at the shopping complex! There are two Ethereals in front of the shopping complex, about 20 yards away, and some kind of huge robotic beast deep inside the complex. God no! Not an Ethereal terror mission!

Shorty orders Daimyo II to jump to the right side of the Skyranger bay, and then follows right himself. This gives Mr. Bug III a chance for a dangerous shot from inside the Skyranger with his Blaster Launcher. It’s a shot that has worked in the Crappydome, but never been tried in actual combat. Mr. Bug III plots a delicate course straight out of the Skyranger bay, then a sharp left, then a straight line into the shopping complex, then a quick left into a wall right near the robot beast. There is no room for error here: Mr. Bug III pulls the trigger. The missile flies straight out of the Skyranger, filling the bay with smoke, then banks sharp left and continues on course to the shop wall, where it goes off in a immense explosion that sends flames, smoke, and debris in all directions. The shopping center is gutted. One Ethereal is cut to shreds by the blast, and we can assume the robot thing is done for as well. A civilian on the second floor of the complex comes tumbling down to the ground floor about 20 yards from our position. Amazingly, he survives the blast! The other Ethereal keeps firing at our tank huddling behind the ramp. And then our tank spots the deep red eyes of that robot thing still gleaming amidst the black smoke pouring out of the shopping complex. The robot thing is still alive? It must have been right next to the Blaster explosion! What kind of evil have we run into today!

We’ve got to follow up this explosion with decisive action. Chief Rum II sprints off the right side of the ramp, dives right, and comes up firing at the remaining Ethereal from underneath the Skyranger. Chief puts two quick hits on the creature, and it falls backwards to the ground with a howl! Our tank now edges towards the robot monster in the complex as Daimyo II runs out of the Skyranger. But just as Daimyo hits the ramp, the robot opens fire on automatic! Damn it! These things can shoot too? Aargh! Daimyo comes under a hail of fire, takes a hit in the left thigh that tears a chunk of flesh out, and then takes another hit that blows a chunk of his left hand off. Daimyo II tumbles down the ramp and rolls to a halt behind the tank. Shorty is quick on his heels. He makes a flying leap for the back of the tank, steadies his Heavy Plasma on the back of the tank, and opens fire. As he does this, a stunned Daimyo II gets up, grabs his dropped Heavy Plasma from the ground, and using one hand adds his firepower to the barrage of green plasma that Shorty is pouring into the complex. The two men put numerous hits on the alien machine, but it just seems to absorb the fire! Can we even damage these things? As the two men continue firing, Achilles exits the Skyranger, drops to the left of the tank, and adds his Heavy Plasma fire as well. This entire exchange takes less than ten seconds, but finally, after what must have been 5 or more hits on the thing, Achilles drills it with one last plasma hit: the alien robot (a tank?) goes up in an explosion! Man, I hope there aren’t any more of those things! X-COM 3, Aliens 0.

Shorty turns to Daimyo II, slaps medipatches over the remains of his left hand and thigh, and orders him back into the Skyranger. He’s too weak to be of use unless things get critical, which judging by the level of our opponents today, could be a distinct possibility.

We then move the men out. Achilles and Chief Rum II head under the Skyranger towards the street at the nose of the craft. The tank swings to the left of our exit and heads toward the road as well. Illinifan IV and Blade II exit the Skyranger and head left, towards the shopping complex. Shorty heads towards the house to the immediate right of the complex. Mr. Bug III exits the Skyranger and goes straight back a ways to set up a firing position with the Blaster Launcher. Raven Hawk, Astott, and Lokugh shuffle to the exit.

Suddenly, we are hit with a tremendous wave of PSI-energy! Blade II immediately starts speaking in alien! He pulls the trigger on Illinifan IV from only three feet away. Five plasma blasts rip through the weak back of Illinifan’s armor, nearly cutting his body in half. As Illinifan IV falls dead and the stunned men in the Skyranger lift their weapons to shoot Blade II, Blade II turns right and opens up on Shorty. A single plasma blast slams into the left side of Shorty’s chest armor, and knocks him to the ground. That is all Blade II can get off before all three men in the Skyranger bay—Raven Hawk, Astott, and Lokugh—open fire on full auto from five feet away. Within seconds Blade II is a smoking corpse. Shorty looks down at the dent in his armor and takes a deep breath to check for broken ribs. He’s ok! Crappy’s Power Suit has saved him! But damn it, we lost two men in their first PSI-attack! X-COM 3, Aliens 2.

Our tank, Chief Rum II, and Achilles continue to advance on the street. Suddenly, our tank takes another damaging hit to its front armor! There’s an Ethereal down the street, about 50 yards away! Chief Rum II and Achilles, well behind our tank and under the Skyranger, open fire as our smoking tank pulls back from the edge of the street. Chief Rum II misses badly, but one of his misses draws a blood-curdling scream from further down the street! There must have been another alien down there somewhere and Chief’s miss picked him off! That’s the kind of luck we’ll need more of! Achilles shots are more on the mark though, and soon the closer Ethereal lets out a scream as a plasma blast removes a leg at the hip socket; the creature drops to the street, dead. X-COM 5, Aliens 2.

Chief and Achilles see another Ethereal in the street, about the same distance away, but closer to the back end of the gutted and still burning shopping complex! Before we can get a shot off it tosses a grenade into the complex and disappears from view. A large explosion follows that rips apart a different section of the shopping center: the Ethereal must be trying to kill a civilian in the shopping complex. We inch our tank closer to the street to try to relocate this alien. There it is, advancing on us through smoke on the sidewalk, about 40 yards away from our position! With all the damage done to the shopping area, there is little left except smoke that blocks anyone’s firing line on this creature. Astott exits the Skyranger, runs left, drops to a knee, gets a HUD sighting, and opens fire, as Shorty edges left and does likewise. Hard to tell who through all the smoke, but one of the two men lands two quick hits, one of which guts the Ethereal. It falls to the ground in a heap! X-COM 6, Aliens 2.

Our tank edges closer to the street again—more incoming plasma fire. Another blast hits our tank, and this time our luck runs dry: our tank goes up in a ball of black flame. Achilles and Chief Rum II will have to take the point. The two men edge towards the street. X-COM 6, Aliens 3.

Back at the Skyranger, Shorty and AStott head towards the ruins of the shopping complex. Raven Hawk exits the Skyranger and heads for the house to the right of that. He’ll head down the alley between the house and the destroyed shopping complex. Lokugh waits for the exit area to clear. Mr. Bug III awaits orders with the Blaster Launcher.

Suddenly we are hit by a ferocious wave of PSI-energy! Lokugh, inside the Skyranger, starts speaking in alien! He opens fire from the Skyranger bay on the men scattered around the exit area! Shorty takes a hit to the back of the head that blows away the back half of his skull and spews brain, bone, and blood in a five-foot arc in front of him. He’s dead before he knew he was hit! Lokugh then turns and fires on Mr. Bug III, drilling him in the stomach with a blast that punches through Mr. Bug’s Power Suit! Mr. Bug’s guts start leaking through the massive hole, and he slumps forward to the ground. Finally, a wounded Daimyo II, sitting in the Skyranger, manages to grab his Heavy Plasma and try to end this madness. Lokugh hears the movement and whirls to fire on Daimyo, but fortunately Daimyo II is a bit too fast: his first plamsa blast cuts through Lokugh’s heart, killing him instantly and sending a stream of gore out the rear exit of the Skyranger!

But oh, what a mess! Two more agents dead, and Mr. Bug III is down and screaming for help in the field at the rear of our exit. We are in deep shit! X-COM 6, Aliens 5.

Raven Hawk, who is fortunate to be alive, takes command. He orders Daimyo II to help Mr. Bug III, then tries to calm the remaining men down. There is still work to do. We can do this. Get it done. Remember your training.

As Daimyo II sprints towards Mr. Bug III, Achilles reaches the corner of the shopping complex by the street. Chief Rum II trails him by a few yards. AStott heads into the shopping complex. Raven Hawk reaches the alley, makes a quick check of the house on the right, and starts down the alley.

Achilles turns the corner and looks down the street! There is a robot beast in the middle of the street, about 50 yards away! Achilles jumps back. Chief Rum II’s HUD lights up, and the two men open fire from concealed positions. Shots slam into the beast, but it stays up, searching for the source of the fire. Finally, after taking five hits, it turns and runs away!

Daimyo reaches a now silent Mr. Bug III, slaps a medipatch on his stomach, and checks for a pulse: nothing. Mr. Bug III is dead! Achilles hears Daimyo II say this over the radio, and cracks. He drops his weapon and sprints for the front of the Skyranger. Damn it! Stop! We need you Achilles! Get your ass together! X-COM 6, Aliens 6.

Chief Rum II starts towards the corner of the shopping complex to take Achilles place. Daimyo II grabs the Blaster Launcher from Mr. Bug III’s death grip, stuffs a missile in it with his good hand, and waits for a target of opportunity. We still have five missiles left. We can do some damage if we must all die here today.

Raven Hawk continues down the alley unimpeded, and Astott continues his cautious advance through the ruins of the shopping area. Suddenly, he spots a large, hulking alien through a window at the back end of the complex! It’s standing on the other side of a wooden fence past the complex, and is just visible through the window and a broken section of fence. It must be one of those robots! Daimyo II punches in a quick firing course, and pulls the trigger. The missile races down the alley, goes up and over Raven Hawk, turns left at the corner, heads behind the shopping complex, turns right, goes through the fence, and slams into the robot! The robot, then fence, then back of the shopping complex go up in a massive fireball! As this happens, Raven Hawk sees a bloody Ethereal corpse come crashing into the far end of the alley as well! Daimyo II got two with that shot! Yes, some payback! X-COM 8, Aliens 6.

Back at the street, the good news helps bring Achilles back under control. He pulls out a grenade and slowly heads back up the street towards Chief Rum II.

All four men continue to sweep west. As Raven Hawk nears the back side of the shopping complex remains, he gets a look at a large apartment building that has been partly destroyed by our last Blaster launch. There, he spots another one of those robot things by a fence on the street side of the building. Daimyo II launches again. The missile follows its programmed course, slams into the robot, and obliterates it in a ball of flame and smoke! X-COM 9, Aliens 6.

Back at the street, Achilles confidence soars with the news of the fallen aliens, and Raven Hawk clears him to pick up his Heavy Plasma and resume full fighting duties. As he goes to pick up his weapon, Chief Rum II heads up the sidewalk and reaches what must surely be one of the last living civilians in this area: with these nasty aliens and us blowing up chunks of buildings, there can’t be much left alive out there. He exchanges a short word. The civilian’s head explodes as a plasma blast tears into it! Chief Rum II turns to look down the street, and sees an Ethereal drift behind the second-story wall of the shopping complex. It’s only a few feet from Raven Hawk’s position. He steps out of the shopping complex, looks up, spots the Ethereal, and opens fire. Astott runs the last few yards through the complex as well, and comes up right underneath the alien. The two men hit the petrified thing numerous times, and its smoking corpse drops to the ground a moment later. Wow, though! How lucky was Chief Rum II! X-COM 10, Aliens 6.

Things grow quiet over the next few minutes. The remaining four men of the sweep make a slow methodical advance down the street. Finally, Chief Rum II spots an Ethereal to the left of the large apartment building. Raven Hawk and Astott open fire from covered positions, pepper the Ethereal with numerous hits, and drop the thing for the kill! X-COM 11, Aliens 6.

And that was the last alien! Yikes! What a mission! Our worst nightmare: Ethereals on a terror mission, and toss in four of those killer robot beasts just for fun.

Raven Hawk, Astott, Achilles, Chief Rum II, and Daimyo II load the corpses of the fallen onto the Skyranger, and late in the afternoon it begins the short two-hour journey homeward.

Wrap-up

Promotions: Jeff Nights II, Captain; Astott, Sergeant.
Kills: Chief Rum II, 2; Shorty, 1; Mr. Bug III, 1; Achilles, 2; Daimyo II, 3; Astott, 2.
KIA: Shorty, Mr. Bug III, Lokugh, Blade II, and Illinifan IV.
Wounded: Daimyo II (33 days).
Attribute Improvements: Chief Rum II, Raven Hawk, Astott, Daimyo II, Achilles.
Final score: -2.
Mission Notes:
One of our bloodiest missions to date, and one of our costliest days.

Although losing anyone is tough, the loss of Captain Shorty is a major blow to our war effort. He was one of our top agents, never cracked under fire, and could always be counted on for a solid performance. It will be so very hard to replace him. A new hero will have to step forward.

Illinifan’s family is having a bitch of a time here, folks. They are already up to their fifthagent! Yikes! And one of their number has most likely gone over to the dark side. Maybe Illinifan V can restore the family honor?

Our score was the worst score for us in a long time. Only one civilian survived. Amazingly, we didn’t kill any civilians in the battle.

Go FOF X-COM!

Klayman: Just googled Avril. Wow. She is the quintessential pilot candidate. Nice find.

Sachmo: Have you been taken over by aliens too?

Kodos: Are you in charge of hiring the Skyranger pilots? Come to think of it, is anyone in charge of hiring the pilots? It's not me.

Superman: The job is yours! You are the new US Interceptor pilot.

Coffee: LOL!

Blade: Sorry about that. But don't sweat the spring rolls. You wouldn't have had time to digest them anyway. They would've just ended up on the streets of Berlin.

Qwikshot: That is a great idea! Celebrity X-COM Skyranger pilot! Maybe we could have people volunteer to write a segment? I could email them the mission results ahead of time, and they could write the Skyranger transmission.

Havok: You're ok. You're on the waiting list right now, and I'll put that in in the next roster update. Basically, someone has to die before you get called up from the waiting list to become an agent on duty. Given that the opposition seems to be tougher now, and I'm rusty from not playing the game for four months, you should be in the game in no time.

Aesyrqwe: Welcome! I'll add your name to the list! We can use the help!
___________

Update:

August 26
The enemy keeps up the pressure. In the early AM, ASIA COM picks up a UFO scout ship over China. Toddiec IV scrambles, catches the ship over Siberia, and downs it in heavy forest.

We scramble the USA COM Skyranger with the following ten men aboard:
Alf III, Thomkal II, Revrew, Rich, CTHomer, Fat Football II, Jeff Nights II, Wignasty, Naiwf, and Fonzie II

Note: This is a mission that I just finished before I had to stop to write up my thesis. I wrote this up as a mini-mission report. At the time, I was trying to speed up the game to finish before I needed to stop completely to write my thesis. I don't like the mini-mission formats, so this will be the last one. Every mission will be written out in full form again after this one.

Well, that was fast. With Superman transferring into the Air Force, and utter carnage in a single mission, Coffee Warlord Jr whips into active duty.

Let's hope he does a tad better than his Coffee Warlord Award Winning father.

Some thoughts...

...we need to use a new temp agency to get our pilots. These guys suck...

...when we stopped last time, PSI energy was our biggest problem, if I recall correctly. I hope Crappy's working hard at a defense for that...

...man, I swear, I have been on some bloody missions! That alien ship in England (the only place I got PSI-attacked successfully), this Berlin terror mission, the attack on the alien base where none of us expected to come home alive (and a few of us didn't). Ouch. Well, as I said before, I continue to volunteer for the roughest and the toughest...

...what's with me spotting and everyone else killing? I must have seen half of the aliens in that thing before anyone else did, and I only killed two of 'em. And the second one was a lucky stray shot. I need to work on my reaction time...

...I hope I get a promotion soon...

...DIE ALIENS DIE!!!...

Chief Rum,

I know how you feel. However, there is nothing wrong with calling in the tactical blaster launcher strikes. And just think, it's better that your friends fired before the alien did . . .

Hey, Boris is even trained in X-Com Radio equipment, as that's what the Meat Grinders were supplied with.

Unfortunatly, he'll need a little bit of medical attention, as he was KIA.

Arggh, I SO want to read this thread, but I'm only half way through Part IV. Got another four pages to go on that, then all of Part V. Ugh, wonder how long part five is.

Man, I can't wait to see how the base raid in Part IV turns out...

well....its pretty late...i can't sleep, as all thoughts pertain to little green sectoids and my heavy plasma rifle...the hot girls, then back to heavy plasma rifle....then to hot sectoid girls....OH GOD!!!!!!! IVE BEEN MIND CONTROLLED!!!! AHHHH!!! NOT OPRAH!!!!!!!!....kill me...kiiiillll mmmeeeee....

on a more serious note, if we do attack the birtish base in the future, i would love to volunteer to lead or be on the assault....no i demand it...with all my ancestors dying quickly, it almost feels weird to live....don't get me wrong i love it, but i know godzilla still hates me for ruining the phoenix dynasty we ran, and then i ran into the ground....paybacks a bitch, and im wondering when godzilla is going to exact his...I would prefer to live, with my history pretty grim, its nice to be doing well, so please disregard all rambling in this post...

P.S. Achilles and I are best friends, and he lives only a few blocks away....if theres any chance i could get transferred to EU COM to fight with him, great...if not, due to talent distribution or what not, im more than happy to be continue serving the asian powers....Just glad to be alive

At this rate will be on Illinifan XI in a few weeks. Hopefully we can find something to solve the PSI problem. As we saw at the Bloodbath at Berlin, mind control is a very effective tactic for the aliens.

Er, so in my last mission, I actually got three kills, right? They were just all on our side< sigh >. Oh well. Perhaps my son will do better.

Well, yes, and admittedly he would be the better part of a century old even if he were alive, but why quibble over petty details? Besides, corpses don't generally treat you to in-depth analysis of the Exorcist while they're meant to be reporting on the mission.

I have read all the threads beginning to end over the last couple of days and frankly I am absolutely amazed at it. From the humble beginnings to the disastrous Mission 23 and the follow-on chaos to the Bobby-is-alive-in-the-shower erasure of said disaster, through the base raid and now the bloody slugfest for Berlin, amazing stuff.

Where do I sign up?

I do want my first iteration to at least have a fighting chance so I'd prefer better bravery and no opting up for him. If he dies, then any follow-ons can go with whatever they get.

Alternately, it looks like a spot may be opening for an interceptor pilot at SAM COM, so I could do that as well.

Toddiec checking in!

Wow! Looks like I need to start checking the board more often! I am checking in for duty and ready to patrol the Asian skies! With all the carnage happening on the ground, I am happy to be safe in my Interceptor.

Hey, any chance we can spread some of the science guys over towards the air combat side of the war???

Just a couple of notes about the on-call list...

We've got 20 people on the waiting list now, which is a lot. Everyone is always welcome, but with 20 people in line, the wait could get kind of long. One thing I've noticed is that there are regular readers and fly-by readers of this dynasty, and to be fair to the regular readers, I think I'll institute a "Phone Call Call-up" from now on. What this will mean is that I'll make a post here saying that you've been called up when your turn comes. To officially get put on a roster, make a post here within 24 hours saying that you are reporting for duty. If you miss the first call, I'll just drop you to the top of the waiting list and call the next person in line, so it's not a big deal. If you miss the second call though, I'll take your name off the list, figuring that you are not still reading. In this way, I think we can get the people most interested in the dynasty and most interested in participating involved in the game quicker.

Also, the default entries for the waiting list are "Yes" if you will accept an agent with a bravery of 20 or lower (low bravery agents seem to be more likely to succumb to PSI attacks, and therefore are more likely to get left out of the big attacks), and "No" to opting up to take a low bravery agent that someone passes on. If you want to change these preferences, just let me know. If you pass on a low bravery agent, your name just gets dropped to the top of the on-call list. This keep happening until you get an agent with a bravery of 30 or better. If you say "Yes" to opting up, you take the first low bravery agent that someone else passes on. You'll get in the game faster, but be a coward. Then again, some of our best agents are cowards.

On that note:

Agent Call Up

Calling the homes of Tucker and Coffee Warlord II...

Ring ring ring.
