Hops Luis Nalasco Chalks Up 300th Save
Friday, April 28th, 2034: St Louis Hops relief ace Luis Nalasco earned a spot in an exclusive club today when he picked up his 300th-career save in the 6-3 victory over the Havana Banana Sluggers at The Brewery. "When I pitch, it usually means we have a chance to win the ballgame, so I have to always be at my best for the team to win," the 33-year-old reliever said after stopping the Banana Sluggers on no runs and no hits in his 1 innings of work.

Nalasco has 300 career saves with a 61-42 record and a 2.65 ERA.

Zamora Pounds HR #300
Sunday, April 30th, 2034: Plantana's 10-5 victory over St Cloud was highlighted by Manuel Zamora's 300th career home run. His teammates congratulated him at home plate after he circled the bases.

"I didn't see all of them out there," Zamora said with a chuckle, "until I rounded third base." He added sheepishly: "It was only a home run. It's not like I won us a World Series!"

In 5 at-bats the Pirates third baseman collected 1 hit in his historic game, scored 1 run, and had 1 RBI.

Zamora has played in 2253 games and is hitting .291 lifetime with 1341 RBIs, 2265 hits, 555 doubles, 43 triples and 300 home runs. He has scored 1188 times and stolen 16 bases.

Smart Hits for the Cycle
Tuesday, May 23rd, 2034: "How sweet it is, when the good part of the bat makes contact with the baseball." That's how Brian Smart, the Ann Arbor left fielder, described what happened in today's 10-3 victory over the Maricopa Rattlers -- hitting for the cycle. In baseball, a player hits for the cycle when he hits a single, a double, a triple and a home run in the same game, though not necessarily in that order. Collecting the hits in that exact order is known as a "natural cycle," something that almost never occurs.

"I heard that sound every time I hit the ball -- it really was a special game for me." It was a game good enough for him to make a little history. He bombed Maricopa pitching for 4 hits in 5 at-bats and his name will now go into the record book. Smart also racked up 1 run batted in and 4 runs scored in the game.

Brian Smart hit a solo-shot off Rafael Chávez in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, tripled in the 5th, grounded out in the 7th and doubled in the 9th.

Thus far in 2034 Smart is hitting .339 with 10 home runs, 23 RBIs, 49 runs scored and has compiled a .430 OBP.

Southpaws Hurler Named CL's Best Starter

Thursday, June 1st, 2034: Wicaksono Layar is the latest Continental League Pitcher of the Month trophy winner. The Chicago starter sparkled on the diamond time and again last month and finished May with an outstanding 5-0 record.

Washington's Moore Bags CL Batting Award
Thursday, June 1st, 2034: Richie Moore battered Continental League pitchers all May and wound up taking home the Batter of the Month Award.

"I've been around FOOL-X long enough to know you really have to work hard day in and day out to be able to put up this kind of consistency," the 26-year-old Moore told reporters. "I put in a lot of work, even on the days I might not take the field, and it's always nice when everything comes together for me like it did this last month."

Joly Belts Number 500
Thursday, June 22nd, 2034: The crowd roared -- they knew they were seeing history -- and Bob Joly was delighted, too: The 36-year-old Southpaws catcher was making history with his 500th career homer. The crowd buzzed and roared again when Joly stuck his head out of the dugout for a curtain call.

"Never, as a kid, did I ever think I'd hit even one," he told BNN after hitting No. 500 in a 5-2 victory over Stafford. Joly went 2-5 in the game, had 3 runs batted in, and scored 1 run.

Lifetime Joly has connected for 500 home runs, hit .309 and driven in 1649 runs.

New York Third Baseman June's Best Rookie
Saturday, July 1st, 2034: Takanibu Inoue is still a bit shy, but then, who could blame the newest Republic League Rookie of the Month honoree? He hasn't been around the league long enough to fully know the ropes yet, despite the fact that he's putting up veteran-like numbers.

In June the New York hitter tagged opposing pitching for a .355 average with 33 hits, no home runs and 19 RBIs.

Saturday, July 1st, 2034: Paul Jones was toddling around on his tricycle when some of the guys he's playing against were in their prime, but the 23-year-old left fielder definitely knows how to get to first, second or beyond. Today he was chosen June's Continental League Rookie of the Month for his remarkable month of hitting.

In 27 games Jones batted .295 for St Louis, slapping 31 hits in 105 at-bats with 4 home runs, drove in 17 runs and scored 11 times.

So far this season Jones has gotten 74 hits in 282 at-bats for a .262 batting average with 13 home runs. His stats include 38 RBIs and 36 runs scored. He has played in 78 games.

Valdéz Shines in Gem
Monday, July 17th, 2034: Jorge Valdéz of the Maricopa Rattlers was on top of his game today. He tantalized the Las Vegas Wildcats with crisp curves and changeups, mixed in with just enough fastballs to keep the batters honest and came away with a 4-0 shutout.

In the postgame comments, the Las Vegas skipper said, "He had the changeup working. You knew it was coming and you still grounded out -- and then he threw it even slower."

The Maricopa hurler had 9 strikeouts, gave up 2 walks and surrendered 1 hit in his complete-game effort.

Valdéz told reporters after the game, "To be successful in this league, you have to keep the ball down. If you don't, they'll make you pay."

This season-to-date, Valdéz has fashioned a 2-11 mark and 9.10 ERA in 89 innings. Opposing clubs are batting .343 against him and he has logged 75 strikeouts.

July's #1 Hurler Announced: López Wins Award
Tuesday, August 1st, 2034: António López has been around the league long enough to know that relievers are often overlooked. That has never stopped him from doing what he does best -- and he did it extremely well in July and stole away with the Continental League Pitcher of the Month award.

The Freedom bullpen ace collected 9 saves and 12 strikeouts in 11.2 innings, holding the opposition to a .053 average and posting a 0.00 ERA and a 1-0 record.

Thus far this season López has registered 45 relief appearances, worked 43.2 innings, struck out 54 and issued 18 walks. He has 31 saves with a 1.85 ERA and a 4-2 won-lost mark.

Wildcats Francis Named RL's Best Pitcher
Friday, September 1st, 2034: Tynan Francis's been around the league long enough to appreciate the honor he received today. After going 4-2 in August, the 31-year-old Las Vegas hurler has been named Republic League Pitcher of the Month.

He fanned 21 in 38.1 innings, logged an ERA of 1.88 and allowed opponents to hit .229 against him.

To date this season, Francis has registered 31 starts, 13-10 won-lost mark, 3.34 ERA, 183 IP, 128 strikeouts and 47 walks. Opposing teams have hit .236 against him.

CL Pitcher of the Month Goes to Carpenter

Friday, September 1st, 2034: Capping off a whirlwind month in which he went 5-1 with a 2.92 ERA, Jermaine Carpenter was selected as August's Continental League Pitcher of the Month today. Reporters caught up with the elated St Louis starter as he left the clubhouse.

"I know it's difficult for pitchers -- when you have a bad start or two, people start wondering if you've lost it. Then you ride stretches like this one for all you can. You find it easier to come to the park every day because know you're contributing to the club, not just waiting for your turn in the rotation to make up for your last start."

Jermaine Carpenter definitely contributed to the club. He had 6 starts, throwing 37 innings, striking out 20, and holding the opposition to a .250 average.

This year in 27 starts, Carpenter has recorded 14 wins and absorbed 7 losses. He has pitched 161.2 innings, allowed 134 hits, struck out 87 and has a 2.67 ERA.

August's Best Rookie Named by RL
Friday, September 1st, 2034: None of the pitchers could figure him out last month. Salvador Flores was pure poison to them, lashing out hits with in such abundance he was voted the latest Republic League Rookie of the Month.

In August he hit the ball at a .305 clip, popping off 36 hits and no home runs with 8 RBIs and scoring 16 runs.

Waikiki opponents have to be thinking about pitching around this guy until he cools off a bit.

Flores's current batting average stands at .318 and he has chalked up 2 home runs and 50 RBIs.

Hernández Receives August Rookie Award
Friday, September 1st, 2034: It was an excellent month for Julián Hernández. He really swung into action! The center fielder for the St Cloud Raindrops was named August's best newcomer in the Continental League.

He captured the honor by hitting .317 with 40 hits, 7 home runs, 27 RBIs and 20 runs scored.

So far this year Hernández has hit .254 with 11 home runs, 61 RBIs and 80 runs scored.

Payton Gives St Louis Goose Eggs
Sunday, September 10th, 2034: Washington's Julius Payton breezed through the Hops lineup today, collecting a 2-hit shutout and a 13-0 victory along the way. Payton fanned 10 as well.

"I didn't really feel like I had my game today," Payton confessed, "but some days are like that -- you just gotta go with what you have."

This season-to-date Payton has 16 wins and 10 losses and a 3.48 ERA.

Carmelo Rips HR Number 300
Wednesday, September 13th, 2034: Oshawa first baseman Carlito Carmelo blasted himself into an elite group of baseball players. Today he joined the exclusive 300 home run club in the Mullets 4-3 loss to the Plantana Pirates.

"As soon as I hit it, I knew it was gone. I was happy to move on. Now I can go and have some fun. It is a weight lifted off my shoulders," Carmelo told the press. He admitted just how much pressure he had been feeling. "Especially every time you'd get out of the hotel, everybody would say, 'Hey, when are you going to hit it?'"

In his milestone game, Carmelo went 2 for 4 with 2 runs batted in and 1 run scored.

In 2050 games Carmelo has a career .336 batting average and a .409 on-base percentage. He has hit 300 home runs with 1382 RBIs and 1325 runs scored.

Alomar Tags Number 400
Sunday, September 17th, 2034: 400 home runs is a lot of home runs to hit. It's a number that very few players reach. Today Manny Alomar became a member of that exclusive club. He belted it at Waikiki Beachpark against the Beach Boys. But sometimes milestone homers don't win the game. The powerful New York right fielder got all the headlines, but Waikiki came away with the victory. They beat the Legends 8-3.

During the postgame interview he told the press, "It's a big relief to get it over. I tried not to think about it, but it's kind of hard when you have a huge sign on the scoreboard staring at you every time you step up to the plate. The home run was nice, but I would have preferred to win the game."

His batting totals for the game showed 1 hit in 5 at-bats, 1 home run and 2 RBI.

The hardworking and dedicated Alomar also said, "I'll celebrate a little with my family tonight but not too much. This is not the last home run I will hit. I think I have a lot baseball left in me and have other goals. I'll get back to work tomorrow."

Lifetime Alomar has played in 1768 games with a .242 batting average. Among his 1718 hits are 409 doubles, 28 triples and 400 home runs. He also has scored 1025 runs and driven in 1305 runs.

It's no fun watching a team that I'm not even running...even if it's only been 2 days without them.

New York clinches a playoff spot and homefield advantage in the RLCS, while Spring loses 6 straight, including a season ending sweep to Portland to force a best of 3 playoff matchup against the same Axemen that just swept them.

Portland led the regular season series vs Spring, so will have homefield advantage for the best of 3 series.
