To anybody on the East Coast, stay alert and stay safe.

As far as tropical cyclones go, this one looks like the real deal. Most models still have it staying just offshore, but it's always wise to be prepared if things get dicey.

We're a couple miles inland from Long Island sound, but elevated enough that flooding shouldn't be an issue. Curious to see what happens. I've never experienced a hurricane before. Hopefully it avoids populated areas.

So - can I be all a-hole about the wimpy north easterners with regards to hurricanes like some of them were about the snow storms?

I should have posted one of these instead:

- A real deal hurricane that is category 1? Bwahahahahahaha!!!!!!!

- even Category 2 = pfft. Let me know when you are Category 4.

- They're pussies.

- They call them umbrellas......

Use Them.....

Honestly, a little wind and everything is going to shut down?

- Okay..I concede that point...but at least we dont start bawling and crying and wringing our hands". Too many people up that way break down when the drop hits. We get our ponchos on and go sandbag

- Lol...the words civilization and Long Island used in the same post......

Ok, I'm stretching now.

I do seem to remember a little bit of a snarky attitude towards 2' snow storms last year. Is it worth tracking them down to prove the point?

Right, that's what I was saying - but Kodos is saying no one in the Northeast is freaking out about the hurricane.

I should have given it time until they did, because it was starting to move that way I think and I was just trying the preemptive joke.

Only things I'm worried about are my flight tomorrow morning not being disrupted and not wanting to kill people who make "My Name is Earl" references.

That stupid hurricane better not ruin my drunken holiday weekend in New England.

I'm sure it won't. Hurricanes in New England just mean, "Rain, possibly some wind". Unless you have a boat tied up somewhere, they're meaningless.

It's "Earl has to die" references around here (which I was guilty of).

What airline? Read an article that several airlines are allowing you to reschedule flights already with no penalty.

I'm trying to find the article with the list, but I know that Delta and Airtran were on it.

It's JetBlue, but its an 8 AM to DC, so I'm thinking I'll be fine.

Well lately.

Back in the 80's it was different. Used to take down some pretty big trees.

Um, you might want to look - 8 AM departure from MA, or 8 AM arrival in DC? The hurricane will be right around DC at 8 AM.

8 AM departure from MA.

According to this DC isn't going to get hit at all.

http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/...weekday=Friday

Of course I realize that that doesn't mean the flight won't get disrupted, but I have to think if its clear in Boston and clear in DC my chances are good.

Huh. I have to watch this stuff a lot because of how it impacts stuff at work and WUndeground seems crazy to me. They have a Tropical Storm Warning for DC right now. The National Hurricane Center puts them at about a 30% chance of Tropical Storm force winds.

I don't think DC is going to "get it bad" - but I would think the Tropical Storm force winds make it pretty risky for air travel.

Both the Weather Channel (http://www.weather.com/weather/hourb...Fri,%20Sep%203) and AccuWeather (AccuWeather.com - Washington Hourly Weather | Hourly Forecast for Washington, DC) show little effect in DC.

What, its almost like you've never been in a hurricane before the way you're getting so worked up.

Heh. I just hate the "unknown" around weather with flights - so if it's me I'd rather not risk it, but that's me.

My sister lives in Rockville, works for NIH. Her husband works for BAE. My dad grew up in Wheaton. So, lots of family visiting for the long weekend.

Love DC incidentally, I'm there three or four times a year.

Maybe this gets at the DC thing better (Chances of getting hit with 39 m.p.h. or higher winds):

So, looks like DC has about a 25% chance of getting hit with 40 mph winds.

Perhaps one of these times we can schedule an FOFC DC gathering around one of those visits. Did we ever have that one a few months ago we were talking about?

No crap, same here - Lexington had less than .6 of an inch of rain for the entire month of August. Looks like scorched earth here.
