I think finishing the Main Event 4.5 months after it starts is ridiculous.

Raymer is already out.

I also noticed Jeff Sarwer has been playing several events this year. He's the real life version of the villain kid from Searching For Bobby Fischer.

Apparently they called a player today on a little known rule. If you have the absolute best hand on the river (say, QKc on a board of 9TJ all clubs), and you are the last to act, you CANNOT check.

Doing so is evidence of soft play/collusion. I bet it doesn't happen that often, but it happened today during the main event, and the player (who checked because he wanted to show everyone the straight flush he had), was penalized and had to sit out a round of hands.

I remember when Chad Brown checked down the nuts (quads on board and he had an Ace) in a Heads Up Championship Match against Kristy Gazes. It was especially bad because she had misread her hand and would have called whatever he put out there. There's nothing easier to do in poker than betting the nuts in position on the river.

I've made some updates here, but I'm sure there are more eliminations that I just haven't seen reported. I'll do some more checking tonight.

Another interesting incident last night:

Two players left in the hand, one bets enough to put the second player all-in if he calls, the second takes several minutes to decide whether to call. Finally, the clock is called, and the floor person comes over and starts the 60 second countdown.

With three seconds left on the countdown, the second player says "call". The dealer hears it, the other players at the table hear it.... however... the floor person does NOT hear it. He finishes the countdown and declares the second player's hand dead. Queue up the controversy.

As it turns out, it saved that second player's WSOP tournament. He was beaten, so he saved some of his chips (although, if I was the first player I would gently suggest that the floor person listen harder next time, or invest in a hearing aid)

So, Johnny Chan Is Basically Crushing This Thing
On the flop of , Johnny Chan bet 4,500 and was called in two spots. The turn brought the and Chan checked. His two opponents also checked behind him.
The river completed the board with the . Chan fired a bet of 7,700. The first player called and then the next player called before Chan tabled the for trip eights. His opponents both mucked and Chan moved to a whopping, field-leading 425,000 in chips.

Ouch. It's gotta suck to be Billy Kopp. Last year ran into higher flush when he was assured a final table spot. And now this...

Quote:
Kopp Coolered, Runs Second Nuts into Nuts
After a series of preflop raises, Billy "Patrolman35" Kopp and Nicolas Babel took a flop of [8s 8d 4c. They both checked.
Fireworks exploded after the turned. Kopp checked-raised Babel all in, and Babel snapped it off with the stone cold nuts.
Showdown
Kopp: [as ah
Babel: [8c 8h
Kopp needed the case ace to survive, but found no help from the on the river. Kopp hit the rail while Babel ballooned to 500,000 chips.

Remaining Scenarios

jbergey22 - Just needs to maintain lead. Rooting for everyone but Michael Mizrachi to take a quick dive. Especially rooting against Jason Mercier, Scotty Nguyen, and Allen Cunningham who are taken by his closest competitors.

Quiksand - Needs Jason Mercier to finish in the top 15 (but not win) and for Michael Mizrachi to get eliminated quickly.

rockboy70 - Needs Scotty Nguyen to finish in the top 12 and needs to dodge points from Allen Cunningham and Michael Mizrachi.

larrymcg421 - Needs Allen Cunningham to cash for at least $50,000 or he cannot pass rockboy. If he does make it that far, then a combination of good scorres from Cunningham and Nguyen could do it.

kingfc22 - Cannot win, since Jason Mercier is picked by Quiksand.

MollyMurphy - The previous champ cannot win since Scotty Nguyen is picked by rockboy and larrymcg.

Subby - Has no players left in the main event.

TroyF - Needs Selbst to cash for at least $720,000 to pass larrymcg, who also has Cunningham. If that happens, then a combination of those two could do the trick.

Lathum - Needs Jason Mercier to win the whole thing.

albionmoonlight - Eliminated because Scotty Nguyen is picked above.

cuervo72 - Eliminated because Selbst is picked above.

digamma - With 4 players left and only one of them picked by someone ahead, Digamma has the most dangerous roster left. He still needs them to score a ton of points or for. Timoshenko as ME Winner is essentally meaningless because if he wins, Digamma would almost certainly win on points anyways.

MIJB19 - In last place by a ton, but can still win in a tie with Lathum if Mercier wins the whole thing.

It's a few posts above, but basically he had AA against 88. The flop x88. Turn Ace. All the money in here. Ouch.

Except according to Poker News, they got most of the money in post flop.

I'll admit I would fold aces on the bubble of the ME as long as I had a decent M.

I understand why an amateur would do this to ensure $$, but my argument is if you're willing to fold Aces preflop, then you should just walk away from the table and blind yourself into the money.

I would likely do that as well and just play my BB for a walk or limped pot and hope to flop the nuts.

I wish I could've defended my title...but I didn't see it until much too late.

Mercier is out, by the way.

I had a pretty interesting bubble story two years ago in a $1500 WSOP event. Not quite folding aces, but I had to make a fairly tough call on "play or pray."

Well, there was a good deal of context... but as the money bubble was approaching, a hand was folded to me on the button, and I had AK. My stack was such that the BB was pretty much obliged to call with any two cards. In my head, I thought it was likely but not certain that I could just fold the next 6 or so hands and eke into the money... or I could push my AK and take my chances (fairly likely to be only something like 60/40 against two random unpaired cards below my K).

(This was after a couple tough hands pushed me from a solid stack to a weakling stack, and I had basically folded my way through about 75 minutes of play to get to this point)

Anyway... I really did agonize over it (maybe 2-3 minutes, I'm not an in-the-tank sort of guy really) and then pushed. He called with J2o, I won the hand, and I had enough chips then to actually last into day two.

Good choice! Which tourny was it? The one where you finished 27th?

That story was from the June 2008 WSOP event... the bottom tier of cashes was about $2800, but by virtue of that double-up+, I got enough chips to survive one level beyond mincash for a few hundred more.

Alas, Scotty Nguyen is out.

Picked players left:

Michael Mizrachi - 1,793,000
Theo Tran - 340,000
Eric Baldwin - 250,000

jbergey22 (with Mizrachi) and digamma (with Tran and Baldwin) are the only ones left with winning scenarios. Looking at those chip counts, it's gonna be a tall order for digamma.
