Tiger Woods to speak Friday

Tiger Woods to speak Friday about behavior, future - ESPN

Quote:
Tiger Woods will break his silence Friday, at which time he will speak to a small circle of confidantes in Florida and apologize for his behavior and discuss his plans for the future.

According to a statement issued by his agent, Mark Steinberg, and his spokesman, Glenn Greenspan, "Tiger Woods will be speaking to a small group of friends, colleagues and close associates at [11 a.m. ET Friday] at the TPC Sawgrass Clubhouse in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. Tiger plans to discuss his past and his future and he plans to apologize for his behavior."

The news conference will occur during the middle of the Accenture Match Play Championship, one of the sponsors that dropped Woods during his sex scandal. His agent said media will be limited.

Woods has been on an indefinite break from golf and hasn't spoken publicly since crashing his SUV outside his home on Nov. 27, which was followed by media reports detailing extramarital affairs. Woods has since said he's been unfaithful to his wife, Elin.

"I have let my family down and I regret those transgressions with all of my heart," Woods said in a December posting to his Web site. "I have not been true to my values and the behavior my family deserves. I am not without faults and I am far short of perfect. I am dealing with my behavior and personal failings behind closed doors with my family."

Woods, who has 71 PGA Tour victories and 14 major titles, announced on Dec. 11 that he was taking an indefinite leave from golf.

I wish he would just divorce his poor wife and embrace life as a millionaire playboy.

According to the rules, once he's divorced, he's cured.

This will fall short of my expectations if he doesn't stroll out like Thulsa Doom, with his minions below him chanting 'Wooooooooood'. Bonus if Phil Mickelson tries to take his head off with a broken golf club while he is talking.

Obviously scripted, but you couldn't have expected anything less from him. He seems heavily coached and he must've watched a lot of Obama speeches, because that's who he sounded like in the way he talked -- obviously without the rhetorical skill -- and so...hmm...I dunno.

I think it was pretty candid and bold by and large, even if it was milquetoast.

I thought it was comical. Ok, now use your hand and put it over your chest. Now talk about finding religion. Now go hug your mom. Now talk about finding help for the fifth time.

I don't think he has to apologize to anyone but his sponsors and family, but whatever.

Is anybody really surprised that it was carefully scripted?

It would have been idiotic, after all this time, to go in there and just wing it -- especially when the subject matter was so tough, and he's not a public speaker.

Granted, his delivery was ridiculously robotic, but I don't fault him for a second for following a carefully crafted script.

You can still sense an attempt by Tiger to control the situation as he did before, from the closed news conference to the comments about any decisions being a private family matter.

This just in, Tiger. The situation has changed dramatically whether it's right or not. If he thinks he can control this situation, we're almost guaranteed a meltdown by him at some point.

Also, the ending where he hugged his mom and others came off as very weak. He could have done all that behind the curtain after the statement. Taking time to make sure it's done in front of the camera made it appear very self-serving, which is the exact behavior that put Tiger in this position in the first place.

I'm waiting for the first time someone screams 'I slept with Tiger too!' right after he smacks a drive. It'll be a big test for a control freak like Tiger as to how he reacts because it's going to happen in some form many times when he hits the links again.

Without his wife present, how can this not be an epic failure? He talked about her a lot, told us what she was thinking, what she was saying, how she was feeling, everything but where the fuck she was at!

What P.R. team thought it would be a good idea not to have his wife present?

The PR team that his wife hired that suggested that she tell him to 'F Off!' if he asked her to be at the press conference. Kudos to her.

Hug his wife at the end?
Hold hands with his wife during the press conference?
Hell, right now I would have been happy if his wife was even in the same damn room as Tiger!

Don't you think everyone was wanting to see Tiger Woods admit he was wrong and then publicly apologize to his wife? To me that is the moment everyone was waiting for, and without his wife present we never got it. Everyone just assumed his wife would be there by his side for this.

Tiger Woods Announces Return To Sex | The Onion - America's Finest News Source

Quote:
PONTE VEDRA BEACH, FL—In an announcement highly anticipated by sex fans around the world, Tiger Woods told a small gathering of reporters, family, and lovers Friday that the most dominant fornicator on the planet would soon return to sex.
"Not being able to get out there and have sex has really been tough on me," Woods said. "I've missed it. I love fucking with all my heart."
Woods said that during his brief time away from sex, he couldn't stop thinking about one day resuming his daily regimen of sexual intercourse with random women who look vaguely like his wife, only skankier.
"When I am out there having sex, I am in complete control," said Woods, an acknowledged master of the long game who claims he is only truly at peace when he is between the legs of a woman. "It's just me and my thoughts. And a high-end escort. And the lounge dancer. And sometimes [caddie] Stevie. And probably some stewardess I just met."
"I'm so into it that I usually just block out all the cameras," Woods added.
Saying that fucking is his "calling and [his] one true passion," Woods spoke of how he has always adored the sight of a neatly trimmed mound, the smell of fresh stank early in the morning when the labia glisten with dewy juices, and the feel of a perfect impact with a woman's vagina.
"That sensation just flows right up the shaft, through my hands, and quavers up and down my spine," Woods said. "Ever since I was 16, I've loved that feeling. It's like new every time."
"To be honest, I'd do this for free," Woods added. "I'm the luckiest guy in the world."
During his announcement, Woods released an aggressive touring schedule that reaffirmed his commitment to sex. He is slated to take part in a three-day lovemaking session in March at the Clarion Hotel in Orlando, and confirmed that he would join a foursome at the Doral Resort and Spa in Miami as a tune-up for his first major fuckfest in Augusta, GA.
In addition, Woods said he will not renege on his annual stop in Dubai, and said he looked forward to boning a prostitute on the roof of this year's venue, the Burj Al Arab Hotel.
The 34-year-old sexual superstar said he is "far from satisfied" by his previous erotic achievements and that he expects to return to sex even stronger than before. However, Woods admitted he may not be in top form at first.
"I'll probably be a little rusty," Woods said. "But once I swing the old cock around a few times and get it in the first couple holes, I'm confident that I'll still be able to drive it as deep as I always have."
"There will be times when I get into some thick muff, and I'll have to set my jaw and hack my way through it," Woods continued. "Just keep my head down and hit that with all the force I can muster. I welcome the challenge."
Woods believes that his long game, which relies on innate strength and stamina, has probably suffered the least from his hiatus, but that his finesse, iron control, and deft touch around the hole are aspects of his game that may be slow to come back.
"I just have to take my time, visualize the line, and read the grain and the slope of the vulva correctly," Woods said. "It's really all mental at that point."
Reaction to Woods' announcement has been generally positive. Many of his closest friends, including Mark O'Mera, said that Woods' return would undoubtedly be great for sex, and that, selfishly, he loves to watch Woods out there doing his thing.
Woods' fans have also been supportive.
"I'm so glad Tiger is coming back," said 27-year-old Florida resident and cocktail waitress Brandi Hughes. "He's the best."
Woods concluded his press conference by saying that he is looking forward to chasing Jack Nicklaus' record of fucking 18 major babes at one time.

Not hold the press conference. It was a zero-win situation, even if he had his wife by his side.

He has allowed the media's verdict on his conduct to become the story here. Now he appears to be following the media down this path.

The Onion piece nails it. No one should be surprised that a professional athlete is a shameless womanizer. Some even admire it. What makes this funny (or sad, if you're related to Woods or his income) is the media circus surrounding his exploits.

Woods needs to find a way to change the story back to his golf game, not acknowledge that the story remains about infidelity. He makes mistake after mistake here. The first was in leaving the tour in the first place.

Ain't that the truth.

Apparently there's people making millions of dollars, guiding him step by step through this, writing this stuff for him to read. Those people are incompetent dolts. I wonder if they high-fived each other after the speech, if that's their idea of perfect PR.

If he just kept playing golf America would probably be over this story by now.

I think it's clear that his handlers are awful at this and if he had any sense at all, he'd fire them. But he can't, because he's been with them forever and IMG controls so much of his professional identity, etc.

If they were gonna do this, it should've happened in December, not February. I mean, nothing he said was new and everything he said -- save for the therapy part -- could've been said back in December. But I guess he had injuries, so he couldn't go before the cameras then.

He just put this thing back into the news cycle and by not saying when he's going to play again, it's just going to keep people speculating, which is dumb. But maybe, in some strange way, the reason this is all so fumbled is because Tiger is the one really controlling it and doing what he thinks he ought to do, rather than listening to people around him.

I mean, it's what got him into this mess, maybe that's why it seemed so bumbled, because he's the one bumbling it.

Umm, I don't think so.

There was plenty of speculation about whether she would or wouldn't be but I don't think there was any sense of expectation about her doing so. Would have been fun to analyze the visual cues afterwards though.

Personally I would have been more surprised if she had made an appearance than by her absence, and would have been shocked if she was there playing the Tammy Wynette part.

Tiger's situation is a textbook example for a psychology class. Up to the incident that set this all off, Tiger portrayed a perfect picture of self-control and family to the media. Behind the scenes, it was the exact opposite. There was a total lack of self-control. Now that it's all out, Tiger and his posse (which includes the PGA because they'd do anything to get him back quickly) is trying to continue this farce of control in his life. It's counter-productive and it's failing badly.

I'd be extremely interested in EF27's take on this situation.

Right. He needed to give the media something new. Even if he said he was going to rejoin the tour in 6 months, that would be the major takeaway. Without that, we know nothing new, so we can only talk about what we do know: he cheated, and he continues to come across as extremely guarded (no questions please) and robotic.

The best part was the fact that his mom wouldn't look at him the entire speech, the guy one row behind her and screen right seemed to nod off.

She hit him up side the head with a 9 iron, I didn't think for a second she'd be there either. Oh, sorry Tiger, I know she didn't do anything. I know if my wife found out I was sleeping with porn stars and bimbo after bimbo she would find something to throw at me, but yours is different. She calmy asked you to leave the house, which is why you were speeding out of your driveway half asleep. Sorry for the accusation buddy.

Good lord. I keep thinking he'll be smart enough to just shut his mouth and play golf again so everyone will let this slide away. Instead he seems to want to find a way to make this a bigger train wreck. Pathetic.

Bah, he gave a good ten minutes of saying he sucks and apologizing, robotic or not. He didn't need to do that, its none of our business what he does.

He is a golf star, and a terrible husband. The consequences should be his wife leaves and takes a chunk of his money for the trouble, and he loses a few sponsors that are image concious.

He cleans up his public act and gets back to golfing no one would care. There are a lot of sleazeball sex addict sports superstars out there, it is nothing new.

Only our gossip obsessed culture would give a crap about this story, let it die already.

Please read the last part of my post. Or just about anything anybody else wrote above it. Most people think he should just keep his mouth shut for all of the reasons you say. Our gossip obsessed culture is not letting this story die BECAUSE Tiger isn't letting it die. He shuts his mouth and plays golf, this isn't a front page story anymore. We all get it. Tiger doesn't. Amazing.

I don't agree. I think that the best way for him to get rid of this is to answer everyone's questions about what happened outside his marriage. If he does not supply the answers, the press is going to continue to look for them elsewhere. He thinks he does not owe the media or public those answers, and I agree. That does not mean people will stop wanting them and looking for them elsewhere. Once he gets all the salacious details in front of everyone, this story is gone in 24 hours.

I think that what he's not getting is that he doesn't get to tell everyone what to do, especially the media. Stop taking pictures of my wife. Stop asking random skanks if I slept with them and printing every yes (Uhh, Tiger, you were not available for corroboration). Not your decision

By not answering questions, he is perpetuating the public's interest in the details. Sure, if he plays golf, ESPN covers that, but the sports obsessed public is way smaller than the celebrity obsessed public, and they won't give a shit if he plays golf or not (they'll barely notice). they won't stop consuming this story until they feel they have all the details and his side of the story.

In any case, I think the worst thing he can do is make more public statements chiding the media. Renews the story and public's appetite for details without sating it at all. And, has a bonus side effect of making it personal with those media members - more determined to make him look bad.

I think that what he's not getting is that he doesn't get to tell everyone what to do, especially the media. Stop taking pictures of my wife. Stop asking random skanks if I slept with them and printing every yes (Uhh, Tiger, you were not available for corroboration). Not your decision

What questions does he need to answer? And what media organization is going to stop searching for woman #21 if he says he only had 20 women on the side? Will YOU believe him if he says he only had 20?

Tiger Woods had almost 15 years of being perfect in the public's eye. That is what is driving the media. They were duped and they are going to garner their pound of flesh. He can't control that even if he sits down and answers questions for 24 hours straight. He only has one shot. Shut up, play golf and wait for the next "perfect" athlete to get caught up in their own controversy.

I could give a rats ass if there were two (I admit to be interested in learning about the first, but ceased being interested after that). I was talking about celebrity obsessed America - which has driven this story more than sports obsessed America.

Profit is what is driving the media, not some sense of being duped. They know if they produce a salacious story about Tiger Woods, people will buy it. Hell, most of the media aggressively chasing this story were not covering him the last 15 years.

I watch now because he's made such a train wreck of it, and I admit to being unable to look away from a train wreck.

At least it was a heartfelt apology. Makes you feel for the guy. He needs a hug or something...

That's what got him into this trouble in the first place.

Personally I would have been more surprised if she had made an appearance than by her absence, and would have been shocked if she was there playing the Tammy Wynette part.
I have just never seen one of these Adultery Press Statements where the wife was not standing or sitting by her husbands side. From Presidents, to Senators, to Congressman, to Mayors, to PReachers to Basketball players, to everyone else that has ever had to issue a public statement because they couldn't keep their dick in their pants, the wife has always been there close by their side when they issued their written heart felt apologies.

But at no point is Tiger going to be able to say enough. Hell, most people don't need to hear anything from Tiger because well why would we believe him? The collective "we" wants to hear from the porn star and the waitress etc. So let's say he gives the sit down with Oprah, and then what? The media will stop? No they will still keeping chasing the story because there will always be more. The media will still chase his wife to see if she will actually stay with him and then will make a judgment after the fact. They will evaluate whether or not the kids are developing normally etc. His words mean absolutely nothing and only serve to make things worse IMO. Hell even don't think he is truly sorry. I think he is sorry he got caught. I think most people have a similar feeling. Nothing he says will change that. However, on the other hand, I am also one of those people who likes to watch him play golf. So for me, if he shuts up and plays golf and wins, he will get me to a TV to watch him play. He will still be a adulterer, but he will be a golf playing/winning adulterer. Right now, he is just an adulterer.

Tiger owes no-one an apology but his family. Go back out and play golf and it's end of story as far as I am concerned. What he did is far from an issue in my eyes. He had a problem keeping it in his pants, big freaking deal. No-one is saying that he raped or assaulted them, that would make it a different story. He had consentual sex with someone other than his wife and people act like he is the first person to do this. The general public needs to get a life.

I must have the wrong group of FB friends as I saw nothing but crap posted about this yesterday "oh that poor woman" "he's such a scumbag" "he's the lwest of the low". Got to love the hypocrisy of the religious (a lot of FB friends are from school and went to a christian school) with no talk of forgiveness which is supposed to be preached.

To be honest I give him credit for self control but that never gets discussed. She went insane and tried to take his head off with a club. Instead of reacting he tried to leave the situation (possible, and most likely probable in my opinion, he even crashed on purpose to try to come up with a excuse for his injuries). If he is a true "scumbag" as the word I have been seeing thrown around (see the FB reference) what would stop him from beating the crap out of her after she attacked him? With accusations of abuse, assault or rape against other athletes I rate wat Tiger did as far fro the worst yet media and general public perception wants to treat it like he is Hitler reincarnate.

Why? What does it matter? How does it affect you if she was there or not. This is a woman that tried to take his head off with a golf club when finding out about it, would you want that risk of instability in the room? Or on her side, why should she have to stand and listen to this? Any apology to her should have already been done and done in private. There is no requirement for her to be in the room for this.

Not going to happen. I would imagine there is a prenup and her act of assaulting him probably is covered in their somewhere (if he was smart).

After purposely not watching this yesterday, I was unable to avoid it as every third segment on Sportscenter was related to it.

First off, Tiger is sorry, he is sorry he got caught just like any other man/woman that cheats or does something else destructive to their family, so spare the dramatics. If it was a one time thing then maybe his apology would be more "credible" but he did this shit habitually.

However, it is his issue to deal with and as others have said nobody elses business. Yes stuff like this comes with the territory of being a star, but this whole highly scripted press conference and the resulting over the top media coverage is ridiculous. Tiger could have learned from Charles Barkley when he was caught driving drunk on his way to get a BJ here in Arizona. Charles owned it, addressed it right away, then put it behind him and went back to work like nothing happened and guess what....everybody moved on.

Instead, I am watching Mike Tirico this morning and the guy sitting with him chimes in with something to the effect of.

"This will be one of those events when everyone will always remember what they were doing with Tiger Woods spoke."

Are you fucking kidding me? He puts an apology (that really should not garner half the attention it has) on par with other "remember where you were" events like. The assassination of JFK, the first man on the Moon and 9/11? That ludicrous statement gives a whole new meaning to sensationalism, what a joke.

Tiger is a scumbag for what he did to his wife, but leave him alone and let him deal with it in private. If his wife chooses to forgive, then so be it, she can get over it and the public should too, if not they divorce.

Sportscenter was no better than TMZ this morning.

My son was messing around on his iTouch and looked up at the TV (ESPN) and asked, "What's going on? Is Tiger Wood entering the Hall of Fame or something? Give me a break."

I laughed.

Mark Sanford's wife didn't do it.
