Concepts that seem outdated

So, I drove back from Maryland today and got to thinking. On my drive, extremely bored, I notice all the power lines and just think to myself, "this just seems so old school, all these large poles sticking out of the ground with so many wires". Kinda seems like there should be a more modern way to go about this.

Heh...well, the wires are still required, and it's a lot cheaper to hang them in the air than to dig up thousands of miles of ground, two feet width, the whole way.

Taking the bad kids to the edge of town and stoning them. Your sweet girls wouldn't get knocked up by these assholes and left heart broken so she finds another guy but he wasn't as exciting as the other, before you know it she is the town slut. Bad seeds just bring the society down and this outdated concept needs to be brought back because before you know it she tells all her friends to try it and most do, wait maybe I should have used a different example on a male dominated board.

Most of the bad kids I know go to the edge of town to get stoned.. The more things change..

I would like to see the concept of paying out the nose for electricity be replaced by reproduction methods that cost little to nothing like wind, solar, tidal, and geothermal energy. That would conceivably drop the cost of everything, not just lower the electric bill.

As far as I know, there is no law that says you have to wait for everybody on the planet to do this at the same time. Hook up a windmill in your backyard, or solar panels on your roof and cancel your electric companies committment to your home.

Same goes for Porn stores. I mean who buys Playboys or Hustlers anymore when it is free on the net.

Writing checks.

VCR tapes. My wife's Dad could clear up an entire room if he would just get rid of these things especially those that he replaced with a DVD years ago.

For most of my adult life, I just assumed, in blissful ignorance, that the words "nuclear power" implied some kind of grand, scientific process, whereupon the genius of man harnesses the direct power of the molecule, through some sort of super elegant process, involving a bunch of zigzagging glass tubes, and bubbling technicolor liquids, and turning lead into gold, and pumping smashed atoms directly into the home as sweet, sweet electricity.

...until about a year ago, when my pea-sized brain eventually figured out that they're smashing atoms together in order to make something really hot, with which to boil a lot of water, and THAT'S where the power comes from...not unlike a really big, radioactive 19th century steam train.

Sending a fax.

These days to send a fax you are more than likely taking an electronic file, sending it to a printer, putting it onto an analog device, which then is probably scanned back into an electronic file on the receiving end.

Shut up, really? Why are nuclear power plants dangerous then? Or is that still my mind not in the current times.

Well (my incredibly shallow understanding is that) the nuclear reactor doing the heating is radioactive, has potential to 'meltdown' in all sorts of catastrophic ways, and does produce nasty radioactive waste....but the actual power being generated is steam power.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_power

Isn't it odd to think that whether we're talking about the world's coal, natural gas, or nuclear power, in a lot of cases we're still just talking about different ways to boil water?

This part can still be tricky --> "smashing atoms together in order to make something really hot"

Hm, learn something new everyday. That's pretty interesting, I had no idea.

I have no clue how to quote multiples posts, but well done on the Carlos Beltran and "Project Vulcan" comments, "No no no, I'm going to leave them alone and not actually witness them dying, I'm just gonna assume it all went to plan. What?"

I think the point (since I go through the same thing from time to time) was that there's rarely an original to fax anymore, that the document often only existed in electronic form to begin with and will end up in an electronic form in the end, so creating a physical something to fax is pretty fucking stupid.

I think there's still enough compatability problems between versions of word, pc/mac, and email clients to prefer to print something out and fax it, even if they're just going to scan it in on the other end.

Also, the fax is useful if you need to get something with a signature somewhere. In that case, a fax might be quicker/easier than a scan/attach/hope the other party can open it.

Finding a FAX is a pain in the ass unless you work in an office consistently. Otherwise, it's irritating and far more trouble than it's worth.

I only fax things when I'm required to -- luckily there is one like ten feet away from my cube.

Once I was at a computer lab sending out resumes for teaching jobs, and all ten schools needed my resume faxed. So I stupidly printed out ten copies (which cost a lot at that computer lab) before realizing I could just print out one copy and fax that.

My boss single handedly keeps fax machines relevant. He's a complete luddite, so he never brings his laptop with him anywhere because he couldn't set it up properly. So, we fax him everything.

He was once on vacation on some Island in the Florida Keys and had received so many faxes that they had the send a boat to the mainland to pick up more fax paper and toner.

The best was a few years back when I had to come in on the Sunday over Memorial Day weekend to work on stuff. It was midnight and I had to fax him some 60 pages while he was in China. Obviously, I was the only one in the office and trying to master the fax machine and get confirmation from China that the fax went through was a complicated process.

I hate faxes.

Are you serious? 39 teams in your league? So what do you do? Just bowl each of your opponents once during the season or what?

This probably isn't the thread for me to continue this discussion. I did start a bowling thread, after all.

Just an FYI, most methods of producing power use the fuel to heat the water and turn it into steam which turns a turbine.

Had to laugh. I spent the week writing a new payroll report so Chesterfield County can more easily apply to FEMA for reimbursement.

Brief public service announcement:

Remember, if you work for the County, the Work Order number is E103 and you need to enter it on the Detail Panel of your Timecard Online.

End of Public Service Announcement.

...until about a year ago, when my pea-sized brain eventually figured out that they're smashing atoms together in order to make something really hot, with which to boil a lot of water, and THAT'S where the power comes from...not unlike a really big, radioactive 19th century steam train.

Actually, pretty much all electrical production goes to that end. You're smashing an atom to heat water and turn a turbine or using steam to turn a turbine or burning oil/coal to turn a turbine or using wind to... well, you get the idea. At the end of the day, electricity is just turning a turbine. Kindof takes some of the magic out of it

Honestly- toilet paper. Really? It's kindof nasty and you can't tell me there's not a better way out there to get ones ass clean than wadding up a bunch of paper and flushing it.
