Windows 7 question

Okay, I am new to Windows 7. I am using the 64 bit WinRAR and trying to extract a file but I am getting errors that the stuff being extracted is blocked.

I am sure it's a small problem that I am just confused with but any help is appreciated.

Some more info, as I tried it again. It says the path is incorrect.

Okay, so I have googled and it looks like the issue is the fact the program I am trying to put the files into is in the x86 program files. So I assume this is the issue>?

Okay, I uninstalled the program and reinstalled it to the proper program file. I redownloaded the stuff I want to extract and tried it again to no avail. The path cannot be specified.

That, after all the posts it took, is the issue as unconcisely as I can be.

I would say check whether you have rights to the c:\Program Files (x86) directory structure if you are trying to extract there (if I am reading your posts right). I have had to do some manual giving my user account rights to some of the folders that Win7 protects, so I can work like I used to do in WinXP. I had to do some of the same things in Vista. Hope this helps a little.

Program Files is not writable by non-admins from XP forward. Everyone was an admin on XP, so no one noticed. Vista on even admins don't have rights unless things are "Run as Administrator".

So what are you RAR'ing into program files? You might want to extract it somewhere else.

See, I'm actually a fan of the security improvement of stuffing my exes in a folder that makes them harder to get to.

well you can always turn it off, un-rar, and then turn it back on

Security improvement isn't a sufficient reason?

Folks should be separating data (which is writable) from exe anyway. Makes it easier to back up for one thing.

this is true. but if you're modding games frequently it's a right PITA.

Which is why games should be set up for a friendly modding system, where mod data OVERRIDES instead of CHANGING existing data, and the mods can be stored outside of the exe area (either in the documents area, or allowing you to specify a path to find that data).

And yes, I've actually implemented this before.

Or go the Thirdwire route and put all your data in the documents area for folks to edit while leaving the critical non-changable exe parts in program files.

The problem here is games not thinking ahead about these issues.

Data is separated from exe in most cases.

I don't actually think protecting already installed exe's is that much of a security improvement.

Since UAC is so easily gotten around, it doesn't really protect anything, it only really protects users against themselves.

Thanks for the help guys. I just took some of the above advice and unzipped everything elsewhere then copied into the correct files.
