Stern Open to Legalized Gambling?

So I'm flipping through the channels and stop on PTI, and the topic they are discussing is "Stern open to legalized gambling?". Ummmm, isn't it already legal to gamble on basketball? I caught the ass-end of their discussion, but I'm trying to wrap my mind around what the hell they were talking about.

Maybe he means that he's open to referees gambling on games and influencing the outcome. That will save a lot of headaches next time around.

FWIW here's an SI online article with plenty of Stern comments on the subject. And after reading it I still don't get the distinction any more than you did.

About all I can see that this changes is whether the league would discourage it or not (i.e. the Maloofs didn't allow NBA bets in their casino, the league avoided Las Vegas until a couple of years ago, etc).

Unless I am mistaken the Maloofs aren't allowed to offer Kings bets, likewise Harrahs properties aren't allowed to offer betting on Celtics games because a high ranking exec owns a stake in the Celtics.

I think it is more a gaming commission regulation and less an NBA compliance thing.

But until 07-08, you couldn't bet on the NBA at the Palms at all, apparently part of the agreement with the league when the Maloofs bought the team.
It's referenced in this article today.

After reading this one, and then reading the first one I posted, all I can gather is that the league is willing to consider supporting something that would somehow legalize betting on them nationally instead of only being available in Vegas & a few other places.

I mean, I don't know how else to interpret this interpretation
Stern told SI.com’s Ian Thomsen that legalized NBA gambling could be a “possibility” that “may be a huge opportunity.” Rest assured, there are massive financial incentives for the NBA to consider the possibility. This discussion could someday take sports betting, which is legal primarily in Nevada, out of the hands of neighborhood bookies and organized crime syndicates and turn it into a mainstream, taxable industry.

Still though, I think it is more of a NGC thing and less an NBA thing.

As for National Sports Betting not really up to the NBA, it is up to the voters in the communities. They tried a few years back to legalize it in Atlantic City and it failed.

But in the Kings case it wasn't about that until recently. Their original prohibition on all NBA betting was between them & the league, it wasn't specific to the Kings, it was on all NBA period.

Looks like what these stories are trying to say (without coming right out & saying it) is that the league might consider backing a move to legalize it on a national level.

A bit of this news came out last week and I also couldn't figure out what the hell they meant, especially when they talked about opening up a huge revenue stream. I get it if they mean the extra money coming from the increased interest in the game once bets are being made, but it seems like they're trying to make a more direct connection than that...

...like the NBA itself would offer a sportsbook's line and act as the house.
