Question My own sick curiosity

OK, there have been more pro war / anti war postings than I care to count. but one thing I'm having a hard time adding up is this:

What do you think are the major motivations for this conflict?

I'll add a poll with some options

feel free to toss your own in here.

Bush got into a game of chicken with Saddam and couldn't back down without losing face.

Shouldn't there be an option for "The US believes Saddam has or is close to obtaining WMDs, and the use of force was the only best for disarming him"?

You know, the reason they said they were doing it?

What the heck is French opposition? I've never heard of it and it doesn't show up in any history books I've read.

1. Saddam Hussein was meant to disarm following his invasion of Kuwait in 1991. He never did. If somebody doesn't put some teeth in these UN resolutions, then all they're good for is sucking dictator schlong.

2. Saddam Hussein has killed, tortured, and oppressed his people for 20 years. I say, when we're done with him, we work on liberating China and North Korea. Commie bastards.

3. After the fall of the Taliban, Iraq was one of the few nations left that was an open haven for terrorists. We ought to steer the tanks towards Syria and Saudi Arabia and hunt down the fundamentalists in those countries, too. (Forgive me if I'm leaving a few other nations out... this is an impromptu post). Terrorists have declared war on the US, and it's time we showed the world that when you fuck with the bull, you get the horns. Period.

If I were going to fuck a bull, I'd probably try the end opposite the horns.

I agree with the ideas, if not the exact verbiage , noted by franlkinnoble, but perhaps in a different order. In my opinion, #1 on the list is by far the most crucial, with #2 being less important, and #3, while not necessarily a reason in my mind, is on of the resulting benefits of a regime change.

1. Iraq is a sponsor of international terrorism and harbors and trains terrorists. Even if Iraq is not directly implicated in the 9/11 hijackings, it is tough to doubt that they have the capability to support a similar attack. President Bush said multiple times flat out that the US would be coming after those who supported and harbored terrorists.

2. Saddam lost the Gulf War, he signed the surrender treaty. One of the key components of the cease fire was Saddam's complete removal of WMD. Iraq should be bending over backwards to show the world they have rid themselves of these weapons, yet the world has tried to shift the burden of proof to the US to show he has some. I think there is clearly enough evidence to suggest that Iraq maintains a significant supply of chemical and biological weapons and was agressively seeking the means to nuclear weapons.

3. Liberation of the Iraqi population from Saddam Hussein's dictatorship. People can cite civilian casualties resulting from this war ad nauseum, but it is likely that the US will save far more people from death at Saddam's hands then will be killed from this entire campaign.
