Im in trouble I think, health wise

So about 10 days or so ago, I started getting GI sick.

Black tarry stool. Diarrhea.

The feeling of a brick being in my stomach area.

Today my urine is 'tea' colored.

Im on Ciproflaxacn and Metronidazol.

It tastes like there is a penny in my mouth.

The results of a stool test come in tomorrow I think but Im definitely not getting better and Im more worried than Im letting on here around the house.

Busy day at work tomorrow but much gurgling and discomfort in my mid to left belly, somewhat belchy. (not right or else I think that might be more apendix like)

As an added note, my friend Keith got sick, like this, but much milder but the duration is the same and now my 8 month pregnant wife is kind of talking about discomfort on that left side too.

Any doctors in the house?

Some generic thoughts, not relating to your care:

Lots of things can cause "tea colored" urine including the medication metronidazole. Other things such as dehydration or blood in the urine can also cause this.

Certain medications can leave a coppery taste in the mouth including Metronidazole.

Quite a few things can lead to black tarry stools. If a person took anything for the diarrhea such as Pepto Bismol, that can cause it. Of course, blood in the upper GI tract can also cause it.

With the many possibilities that exist, if it was me, I'd certainly follow up with my doctor ASAP, but I would do my best not to panic as it could be all relatively benign.

Black stool could also be an ulcer, no?

This all started off of a bad lunch I think about 11 days ago. Keith was at that lunch and so was ash and while they have similar symptoms theyre nothing like mine...nothing. Could an ulcer be why Im so much worse off than them?

That penny taste sure rang the "bleeding ulcer" bell for me.

BTDT, not fun.

Seriously, try not to stress Flasch as that won't help anything, but do follow up with your doctor.

Sounds to me like an excess of black bile. A melancholic humour requires balancing with hot, moist food and drink. It wouldn't be a bad idea to be bled either.

Have you tried any probiotics? Those things are great. Maybe you should get some Kefir to drink. When my gastro-intestinal system goes all funky on me, I bomb myself with probiotics, and it works wonders.

You should certainly see a doctor, though, 'cause probiotics won't help with an ulcer.

I'll get the leeches. It's a good thing you came to us.

On a serious note, it sounds like something contagious, so while that's not pleasant it at least is less worrisome.

Why would the fact it can be spread be something to worry less about?

If you've been taking Pepto Bismol it'll make your poops black and tarry.

Otherwise, if it keeps up, I'd keep following up with a doctor. As others have said, black is usually a sign of some blood in there. Could be something as simple as some GI irritation from whatever you have, but it could also be something serious (although unlikely).

The good news is that the stool test should tell you something, so I'd wait for that before doing anything rash (no pun intended).

However, please tell me your pregnant wife has gone to see her doctor immediately....

update:

So I called the doc's office and got the receptionist and asked for the results. She said that they havnt come back yet and I told her about the additional symptoms. She said she would tell the doc and they would call me back.

4:45pm

No call back.

So no call from my calls yesterday to find out if I should go to the ER (they were paged) and no call today from me calling in.

I think Im going to be switching doctors.

Just relax. If there was something to report the lab would have done so already. If the doctor thought your symptoms showed something urgent he would have called you already.

Spend a day with just clear liquids, avoid caffeine and let your system clear itself out like that. wait for your doctor to let you know what the tests said, call them again tomorrow if they haven't replied today.

Patience and rest will do far more for you than getting agitated and upset because you haven't heard anything right off the bat.

So what? There is nothing more frustrating than a doctor that won't tell you what's going on, and worse won't return a promised callback. I've ditched a doctor before myself (because I wasn't getting full explanations, and he was more interested in prescribing me a pill than really checking to see what might be going on) and am MUCH happier with the new doc.

He's free to do so if he really wants to, I was simply trying to reassure him that A) its probably not as bad as he's stressing and B) stressing is worse for any condition than taking a breath and relaxing a bit.

No call from the Doctor yet.

My guts dont hurt so bad but my bladder does, especially after urination.

The urine is normal colored now.

Im probably at about 60% of normal...

thanks for checkin in on me. Im quite disappointed that there was no call today from the doc. I wonder why its moved to my bladder?

To piggyback on both sides of this, I remember seeing studies where doctors with poor communication/bedside manner didn't make any more mistakes, but ended up with 10-12x as many medical malpractice suits. So it probably isn't anything serious, but if this is raising concerns about the doctor definitely switch - worrying too much risks agitating (or even causing) numerous ailments, so find one you're comfortable with.

Are you still having diarrhea? My initial thought was that you might have C. Difficile (more commonly known as C. Diff). You get it sometimes from antibiotics because they can kill everything including your friendly bacteria that keeps things in check so C. Diff can take over. If you do have C. Diff, they will need to put you on another antibiotic (usually Flagyl).

I read that study as well, and have always put aside 30-60 minutes at the end of each work day to return calls.

Flasch, I would call them again. They should have at least returned your call by now even if it was to say they don't have the test results yet.

Yeast infections can also be caused by antibiotics, but C. diff and yeast infections are very different. C. diff causes very smelly diarrhea (once you have smelled it, it haunts you) and yeast infections cause lots of itching and drainage.

called and they said they just got the results and will call me back. I prompted as to when and they said, "they have patients all day" and I asked if they could please call me today. She inferred that she would try to get a response today. Earlier in the convo she said it'd be either this afternoon or tomorrow morning and I mentioned the initial 3 day estimate and how it has now been 8. I didnt mention the nonreturned calls from Sunday when I thought I was dying.
