Even more of a shame considering NY could have brought him back and still been under the cap.

Morales Superb Against New York
Sunday, April 9th, 1972: The Legends tried, but could not solve Spring's Mauro Morales, falling to the Lions 12-0. New York managed only 4 hits off Morales, who kept opposing hitters guessing all day. In a strong route-going performance he had 12 strikeouts and walked 1.

Ken Bailey Drills 3 HR in One Game
Sunday, April 9th, 1972: Cleveland won't soon forget the display of raw power put on today by Ken Bailey of the Portland Grocers. He victimized the Naps by pounding three pitches out of Ballpark of Cleveland. The homers sparked his club to a 14-4 win and got him a spot in the league record book.

"I got three pitches down the pipe and popped them," Bailey told reporters. "Today I was in a groove... tomorrow I could just pop up the same pitches and go oh-for-three."

In addition to the homers, he collected 8 RBIs and scored 3 runs.

K. Bailey grounded out in the 1st, hit a GRAND SLAM off C. Young in the 2nd, singled in the 4th, flied out in the 6th, hit a solo-shot off I. Orosco in the 8th and hit a three-run home run off I. Orosco in the 9th.

In 9 games this season Bailey has batted at a .244 pace with 10 hits and 3 home runs.

Aoshima Shows Off, Hits for Cycle
Monday, April 17th, 1972: Most fans have never seen a player get a single, double, triple and home run all in one game -- but it happened today at Ballpark of Cleveland. Tsuneo Aoshima of the Cleveland Naps hit for the cycle against Ann Arbor. He went 4-4 in the 11-3 victory, scored 4 runs and had 3 runs batted in. It was a day to remember for both Aoshima and the fans.

T. Aoshima singled in the 2nd, hit a two-run home run off J. Warren in the 3rd, hit an RBI triple in the 5th, doubled in the 7th and walked in the 8th.

Currently Aoshima is batting .300 with 4 home runs, 12 RBIs and 8 runs scored.

Pérez Raps 3 Homers Against Wolverines
Saturday, April 29th, 1972: His swing was a thing of beauty. Three times Iván Pérez swung the bat and three times he delivered a home run. It was an awesome sight to behold at Legends Ballpark. But to no avail. As good as he was, his team, the New York Legends, couldn't bring home the victory. The Ann Arbor Wolverines prevailed 10-9. Pérez does have the consolation that his three home runs in one game will get him a place in the league record book.

However, his team was in a somber mood after the loss. They felt they had spoiled his special day.

But Pérez would have none of that, pointing out, "We win as a team and we lose as a team." In the clubhouse he described his home run explosion. "I got three pitches down the pipe and popped them," the New York catcher told reporters. "Today I was in a groove... tomorrow I could just pop the same pitches up and go 0-for-3."

In addition to the homers, he collected 4 RBIs and scored 4 runs.

I. Pérez flied out in the 1st, hit a two-run home run off K. Maeda in the 3rd, grounded out in the 5th, hit a solo-shot off K. Maeda in the 8th, hit a solo-shot off M. Pelletier in the 9th, walked in the 11th and walked in the 13th.

For the year Pérez is batting .327 with 8 home runs, 29 RBIs and 20 runs scored.

RL's Top Hitter Announced
Monday, May 1st, 1972: Manuel Zaragoza battered Republic League pitchers all April and wound up taking home the Batter of the Month Award.

"I've been around FOOL-X long enough to know you really have to work hard day in and day out to be able to put up this kind of consistency," the 29-year-old Zaragoza told reporters. "I put in a lot of work, even on the days I may not take the field and it's always nice when everything comes together for me like it did this last month."

In 28 games, Zaragoza hit .324 with 9 home runs, 33 RBIs and scored 25 runs.

Boston's Ontiveros Bags CL Top Batter for April
Monday, May 1st, 1972: Free agent-to-be Paco Ontiveros has inflated his asking price over the past 30 days by winning the Continental League Batter of the Month.

In April, the 30-year-old Boston third baseman hit .418 with 4 home runs and 21 RBIs.

If he keeps putting numbers like that up, he could be hauling in a big wad of cash at this time next year.

Well he did come up to the majors pretty young. He's only 27 and not even fully capped out ratings wise. So theoretically he only should get better.

At 26 last year he was 11/6/5, a year later he's 11/7/7, so yeah, I guess those 3 ratings points have made a big difference.

Durán Big Deal in Portland: Hits for Cycle
Thursday, May 11th, 1972: At Ballpark of Cleveland today José Durán led Portland to a 7-6 victory over the Naps by hitting for the cycle, one of baseball's most difficult feats.

The Grocers first baseman told reporters after the game, "Most people think the triple is the hardest one to get, but today, it was the homer... because the ball wasn't carrying. When I took it deep, I expected the ball to die on the warning track. Seeing the umpire give me the signal to circle the bases was sweet."

In addition to going 4-4, Durán chalked up 3 runs batted in and scored 2 runs in an exceptional performance.

J. Durán doubled in the 2nd, tripled in the 4th, hit a three-run home run off J. Alfonso in the 6th and singled in the 8th.

Thus far this year Durán is batting .267 with 2 home runs, 9 RBIs and 7 runs scored.

Huh.. this must be a new news story in OOTPX. I don't remember news stories for save milestones before!

New York Defeats Ann Arbor 2-1, Nichols Nabs 300th Save
Sunday, May 14th, 1972: Stephen Nichols has joined elite company. The New York Legends reliever earned his 300th save in a 2-1 victory over the Ann Arbor Wolverines at Ann Arbor Grounds. The newest member of the 300 club told reporters after the game, "I get the ball and I try to win the game. When I get a save, my team wins and really that's all that matters. I'm happy to reach the milestone but it's just that. The more important part is that I've helped my club win." While picking up the save, Nichols allowed 1 hit and no runs in 1 innings of work.

Despite the dejection of their team having lost the game, even a number of Wolverines fans were seen honoring Nichols as they joined in the standing ovation as he recorded the final out on his historic save. "That was pretty special," he said. "Something I won't soon forget."

During his career Nichols has converted 300 saves with a 61-49 mark and a 3.60 ERA.

2000th Hit for Aoshima
Wednesday, May 17th, 1972: It was a banner day for Tsuneo Aoshima, who collected his 2000th hit in the Cleveland 9-7 win over Spring. Aoshima went 1-4 in the game as both Naps and Lions fans cheered Aoshima, when he reached base after his hit.

"It feels great to get #2000," Aoshima said afterward, "especially since we won the game."

Lifetime Aoshima is hitting .301 with 2000 hits, 212 home runs, 1024 runs scored and 1085 RBIs.

Hey Cleveland, if you don't make the playoffs this year we could do a little "help me, help you" and send Ryan Cook my way for a slew of prospects. Just throwing it out there.

Ruíz Is King of Swing: Goes Deep 3 Times
Saturday, May 27th, 1972: It was a good day for London and an exceptional day for Octávio Ruíz. The 26-year-old first baseman sent three bombs out of the park to help the Bishops beat the Mexico City Aztecs 10-2 at Bishops Ballpark.

Following the game, he was asked about his performance. "When you're in the zone, the game really slows down," Ruíz commented, "I couldn't even tell you what pitches were thrown. Today feels great, but it is a long season and tomorrow is another day."

For the day he scored 3 times, drove in 7 runs and smacked 4 hits in 4 at-bats.

O. Ruíz hit a two-run home run off R. Nall in the 1st, hit a solo-shot off R. Nall in the 3rd, hit a two-run double in the 4th, hit a two-run home run off J. Smith in the 6th and walked in the 8th.

So far this season Ruíz has 7 home runs and a .313 batting average.

Don Martin's hitting streak I believe was only the third time anyone has ever gone past 30 games straight with a hit in FOOL-X.

The record of course is an incredible 47 games in a row by Roberto Ruiz of Ann Arbor back in 1963

RL Rookie Vote Goes to Cook
Thursday, June 1st, 1972: Youngster Rob Cook emerged as the latest Republic League Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Ann Arbor deserved the honor, batting .371 with 8 home runs and 27 runs batted in. Is the month of May a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Cook enjoy the limelight.

This year Cook has hit at a .348 pace and produced 56 RBIs, 17 home runs and scored 48 runs.

Best Continental League Newcomer Named

Thursday, June 1st, 1972: Don Martin is still a bit shy, but then, who could blame the newest Continental League Rookie of the Month honoree? He hasn't been around the league long enough to fully know the ropes yet, despite the fact that he's putting up veteran-like numbers.

In May the Indianapolis hitter tagged opposing pitching for a .355 average with 44 hits, 4 home runs and 18 RBIs.

So far this year Martin is batting .313 with 4 home runs, 32 RBIs and 32 runs scored.

The Continental League is starting to look like a run away. The Republic league has just 6 games seperating all teams from the playoffs.

Claudio Estrada becomes just the third player in FOOL-X history to get 400 Home Runs!

Estrada Rips HR Number 400
Saturday, June 10th, 1972: Cleveland's outstanding left fielder Claudio Estrada joined the 400 home run club today at Legends Ballpark with a booming blast in the Naps win over the Legends. They topped New York 9-3.

On his milestone day Estrada had 2 hits in 5 at-bats with 2 RBI and 1 run scored.

Tongue-in-cheek he told the press, "Don't tell me when I get close to the next milestone. Just tell me after I reach it. It will be easier to hit that way."

In 1678 career games Estrada is hitting at a .273 pace with 1756 hits with 324 doubles, 22 triples and 400 homers while scoring 1098 runs and racking up 1310 RBIs. He logged 788 walks and owns a .353 on-base percentage.

Morales Shuts out New York
Tuesday, June 13th, 1972: It was a quiet day for the New York Legends at Legends Ballpark today. It was Mauro Morales, the Spring starting pitcher, who made all of the noise. He shut them out 14-0, allowing 2 hits while walking 1 and fanning 6.

On his stats sheet this season Morales shows a 10-5 record, 18 starts, 135.2 innings, 124 strikeouts and a 2.32 ERA.

Republic League Announces Top Starter
Saturday, July 1st, 1972: Tom O'Reilly took home the Republic League Pitcher of the Month honors in June. After all these years playing ball, the 37-year-old veteran still enjoys the game as though he'd just broken camp for the first time a month ago. He's a bit older now with a few more aches and pains, but the old man has reason to celebrate, having gone 3-0 for Cleveland last month and claiming the Pitcher of the Month award.

He tacked up a 1.63 ERA in his 5 starts, tossing 38.2 innings and striking out 28.

So far this season O'Reilly has a 8-5 record, 17 starts, 138.2 innings, 100 strikeouts and a 2.66 ERA.

In 21 starts this season Bujold has compiled a 14-4 record and a 3.18 ERA.

New York Newcomer June's #1 Rookie
Saturday, July 1st, 1972: Michel Boulanger earned June's Rookie of the Month honors in the Republic League for last month's performance. The boyish New York first baseman might be wet behind the ears, but he's proving that he has what it takes to play at this level.

Boulanger hit .266 with 4 home runs, 20 RBIs and 15 runs scored this past month on his way to winning the award.

This season in 82 games Boulanger is batting .311 with 20 home runs, 66 RBIs and has scored 46 times.

June's Spotlight Falls on Rookie Star
Saturday, July 1st, 1972: Pat Granter's eyes seem to light up whenever he sees the baseball. The young Mexico City right fielder has been hitting everything in sight for the better part of a month.

In June he was voted the Rookie of the Month Award.

During the month he hit .348 with 5 doubles, 1 triple and 2 home runs. Granter also scored 16 times and drove in 17 runs.

Granter on the season is hitting .273 with 5 home runs. His stats include 42 RBIs and 38 runs scored.
