CLCS Game 1:

Rick Corcoran for Balzac vs Henock Thuku for London

Balzac jumps off to a good start vs this year's Continental League Triple crown winner by scoring 2 in the top of the first on a RBI single from Acevedo and a Sac Fly from Pedro Cortez. They score another in the third on a Juan Marrero RBI single.

London comes back however when Frank Hughes hits an RBI triple in the bottom of the 6th to score two, and then he hits another Run in on a single in the bottom of the 8th to tie it up!

Neither team can score in the 9th which means we are headed to extra innings!

In the top of the 10th, Balzac is able to break through against London Reliever Adelino Ticao when Juan Marrero hits an RBI single to score one and put Balzac up 4-3.

The TIcklers choose to stay with Dale Robinson in the bottom of the 10th to try to close out the game. Robinson gives up a single to Lee Robinson,Raul Ramirez and Ramon Matoza which loads the bases with only one out!

Chris Sutton comes to bat with the bases juiced.. He watches the first two pitches pass by and be called a ball. He then takes a cut at the 2-0 pitch, but swings and misses... The 2-1 pitch.. Hit hard towards left field... but it is speared by the third baseman, what a great play! Lee Robinson was way too far off the base and the third baseman gets there before he can get back for an unassisted double play!! That is the ball game!

Balzac 4, London 3

RLCS Game 1:

John Major pitches for Portland vs Craig Young for Virginia Beach

The Surf enjoy a big second inning where they score three runs, thanks in part to a Craig Cunningham RBI single that scores two of the runs. In the next inning, Virginia Beach scores two more runs on back to back RBI singles from Davey Holloway and Bruce Thurman which gives them a 5-0 lead.

Portland scrapes back three of the runs in the top of the 4th on three singles, a double and a walk but that is all they can muster as they fall in game 1 to the defending FOOL-X champions.

Virginia Beach 5, Portland 3

CLCS game 2:

Vincente Parra for Balzac vs Carlos Juarez for London

London jumps to the lead first this time when Chris Sutton scores on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the first to give the Bishops a 1-0 lead. Balzac immediately comes back swinging however when a Miguel Guzman RBI double scores two in the top of the 2nd followed by a Denny Wills RBI single that scores a third to give the Ticklers a 3-1 lead.

The game is tied up once again in the bottom of the third on a Jose Caro 2-run Home Run and that remains the score for a few innings..

In the top of the 6th, Balzac scores twice again, on a Wills RBI double and Marrero RBI single. London cuts the deficit by one when Rich Rooke goes deep in the bottom of the 7th, but that is the last baserunner that they will get on base for the remainder of the game.

Balzac wins a second straight game on the road to start off the league championship series.

Balzac 5, London 4

Balzac leads the series 2 games to 0.

RLCS Game 2:

Matt Powell pitches for Portland vs Wan-fang Zhao for Virginia Beach.

Portland strikes first this time around, when leadoff hitter Jose Guzman reaches on an error by the first baseman. He proceeds to take second base on a wild pitch, takes third base on a passed ball and then scores on a fielder's choice. After the top of 1, Portland has 1 run on 0 hits!

Virginia Beach ties it up in the bottom of the second on a Hank Lee RBI single.

Both pitching staffs are on their game and no other runs score through 7 innings. In the top of the 8th, Rick Campbell shows why he is one of the best players in the game as he takes a fast ball 418 feet over the right field fence for a solo Homer that ultimately proves to be the game's winning run.

Portland 2, Virginia Beach 1

The RLCS is tied at 1 game each

Henock Thuku for London (0-0 6.75 ERA this postseason)
vs
Jorge Lopez for Balzac

The Bishops bring back Thuku on short rest and then proceed to get him a huge early lead on a Pedro Perez 2-run Homer in the first inning and a Rich Rooke RBI single that scores two in the second for a 4-0 London lead.

London scores an insurance run in the 5th and manage to hold on through a late game Balzac rally to win. For the third straight game, the road team wins!

Thuku ends up pitching 5 innings and gives up 0 runs on 3 hits in the win for London.

London 5, Balzac 3

Balzac leads the series 2 games to 1.

RLCS Game 3:

Charlie Pepin pitches for Virginia Beach vs Jorge Perez for Portland.

In the top of the third, a Danny Barry double with runners on second and third scores one run.. Orlando Garcia, whom had been on second base rounds third and tries to score as well, but he gets nailed at the plate for the third out of the inning. Virginia Beach still leads 1-0.

Portland ties it up however in the bottom of the inning on a Bryan Pitts sacrifice fly which makes the score 1-1.

The Surf score two more runs in the 6th on a Holloway RBI single followed by a Bruce Thurman sac fly which gives them the 3-1 lead, but once again Portland ties it back up, this time in the bottom of the 7th inning on RBI singles by Cabanas and Pitts.

Virginia Beach threatens to win this one late with a Bruce Thurman 8th inning 2-run homer that gives them the 5-3 lead. Portland gets one of those back in the bottom of the 8th when Preston Lawson hits an RBI single but that was all that they could get in the 8th..

Virginia beach does not score in the top of the 9th, leaving Portland to have to face their closer Wyatt Loder.

The leadoff hitter Luis Cabanas starts off with a single. He is pinch run for by Don Jacobs. Jose Guzman, the next hitter sacrifice bunts him over to second, and then he advances to third on a ground out fielder's choice.

THe tying run is at third with two outs for Rick Campbell, whom had already been a hero once this series. Campbell takes the first pitch for a called strike.. The 0-1 pitch he hits hard.. but right at the third baseman. The Third baseman takes it and throws.. but he throws it away!! Jacobs scores from third and the game is tied at 5!

Loder gets Taylor to strike out next to end the inning, but the damage has been done, we are going to extra innings!

In the 10th, both teams manage a single, but neither are able to score. The 11th inning also passes by uneventfully.

In the 12th, Orlando Garcia leads off with a single, gets to second when van den Berg reaches base by being hit by a pitch. A walk to Aoshima loads the bases with only 1 out. Davey Holloway gets a pitch that he likes and hits it deep to right field.... but not deep enough for the grand slam, it is caught by the right fielder. A run will score though, and the Surf go up 6-5 in the top of the 12th! Thurman strikes out to end the inning without any further runs scoring.

In the bottom of the inning, Jose Zuniga leads off with an infield single. He is bunted over to second, and then reaches third on an error by the shortstop. With 1 out, the batter is Joe Knapp. Knapp swings on a 2-1 pitch and hits it deep to right field.. it is caught, but Zuniga scores from third and once again the game is tied at 6! Osawa grounds out to end the inning, but in an almost exact copy of the top half of the inning, Portland stays in the game.

In the top of the 13th, Virginia Beach scores again, this time 2 runs on a RBI double by John George, putting Portland's back against the wall for a third time this game... In the bottom of the inning, Guzman gets on as the leadoff hitter with a single. McLean strikes out, but a Sanchez Double puts runners on second and third with only one out! Lee Taylor, up next hits one right at the shortstop. Guzman scores to cut the Surf lead by one.. but Zuniga then grounds out to end the inning. Portland couldn't come back this time and Virginia Beach wins.

Virginia Beach 8, Portland 7 (13 innings)

Virginia Beach leads the series 2 games to 1.

CLCS Game 4:

Carlos Juarez for London (0-1 7.94 ERA this postseason)
vs
Xavier Flores for Balzac

Both starting pitchers are great in this one, Juarez pitches 6 innnings, gives up 0 runs on 5 hits for London and Flores pitches 7.1 innings, giving up only 1 run on 7 hits for Balzac.

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the 8th, Denny Wills hits a 435 foot solo home run to tie things up for Balzac!

Neither team are able to score in the 9th, which sends us to extra innings. Neither team is able to get a hit in the 10th either. London goes down in order in the top of the 11th, but in the bottom of the inning Marrero leads off with a single for Balzac. a Walk to Reyes puts runners on 1st and second with no outs for Sergio Acevedo.

Acevedo fouls off two pitches behind the plate before hitting one on the right side of the infield. It is just hard enough to get through the hold between first and second. The runner easily scores from second on the hit, and that is the ball game!

Balzac 2, London 1 (11 innings)

Balzac leads the series 3 games to 1.

Julian Campos pitches for Virginia Beach vs Colt Vogel for Portland

Akke van den Berg hits a 3-run home run to break a scoreless tie in the top of the 6th and Orlando Garcia hits a solo homer in the next inning. Although Portland's starting pitching was good, Vogel falls apart in the second half of the game and Virginia Beach easily cruises to a win.

Virginia Beach 8, Portland 2

Virginia Beach leads the series 3 games to 1.

CLCS Game 5:

Thuku pitches for London (1-0 3.00 ERA this postseason)
vs
John Edwards for Balzac

A game time decision pulls Thuku as he is not able to pitch and instead Matt Hickok goes for London in a must-win game. Hickok pitches well though, he goes 6 innings and gives up 0 runs on only 3 hits as the London bullpen inherits a 1-0 lead entering the bottom of the 7th.

In the 7th, a Luis Torres solo home run ties the game back up at 1-1 which remains the score entiering the 9th.

London gets a 1 out back to back doubles from Marrero and Vincent to score one, then a 2-out RBI single from Abreu puts them up 3-1 entering the bottom of the inning.

London brings in Jimmy Murdock to try to close the game out for them. Murdock strikes out Reed and then gets Torres to fly out for a quick first two outs. Acevedo and Sweet hit back to back singles though to try to start a 2-out rally.. Wills, the next hitter hits one to the gap in right-center.. it goes all the way to the wall and two runs score! The game is tied at 3!! A pinch hitter Pancho Castillo steps up next and grounds out to end the inning, but Balzac has forced extra innings once again!

Neither team score in the 10th, in the 11th claudio Garcia hits a Dale Robinson pitch over the right field wall to give London a 4-3 lead. Balzac once again starts a 2-out rally when Acevedo singles. This time Dave Sweet strikes out which ends the inning and the game.

London stays alive to force a game 6!

London 4, Balzac 3 (11 innings)

Balzac leads the series 3 games to 2.

RLCS Game 5:

Tadaaki Kato pitches for Virginia Beach
vs
John Major for Portland (0-1 5.63 ERA this postseason)

The Grocers score 1 in the bottom of the 2n on a Lawson RBI sacrifice fly, but Virginia Beach ties it up in the top of the third on a Danny Barry RBI single.

In the bottom of the 4th, Portland scores two more, but once again Virginia Beach ties it up at 3 a piece in the top of the 5th. Portland takes yet another lead in the bottom of the 7th inning on a Jose Guzman RBI single, but for the third time, the Surf tie it up in the top of the next inning on a Mauro Ramos RBI single.

In the top of the 9th, Virginia Beach takes their first lead of the game when Aoshima hits a RBI single that scores Barry from second for a 4-3 lead.

Portland, having to score in the bottom of the 9th to keep the series alive faces Virginia Beach closer Wyatt Loder. Loder proceeds to strike out Bobby Robinson looking, Preston Lawson Looking, and Joe Knapp swinging. Loder has struck out the side and Virginia Beach wins!

Virginia Beach 5, Portland 4

CLCS Game 6:

Rick Corcoran for Balzac (0-0 3.52 ERA this postseason)
vs
Carlos Juarez for London (0-1 3.86 ERA this postseason)

Acevedo scores in the top of the first on a throwing error by the London second baseman to give the Ticklers a 1-0 lead. Balzac extends the lead to two on a Wills sac fly in the second.

London gets back one of the runs in the bottom of the second when Jose Caro scores on a double play ball. The Bishops then tie it up in the bottom of the third on a Alfredo Castillo RBI double!

In the 5th, London takes their first lead thanks to a Frank Hughes solo home run, but Balzac comes back in the 7th on a Wills 2-run homer and then later in the inning Juan Marrero scores to give the Ticklers a 5-3 lead!

Balzac scores an insurance run in the top of the 9th when Pedro Cortez hits an RBI single. Trailing by 3, in the bottom of the 9th, London starts a 1-out rally as a single, fly out and then another single put runners on first and second with two outs. The tying run coming to the plate in the form of pinch hitter Guillermo Gonzales..

Gonzales fouls off a pitch and then swings through another one.. the 2-2 pitch... is low.. way low.. and way outside... a Wild pitch!!

The runners advance to second and third now, but they don't matter. The tying run is still the hitter. He fouls off another pitch.. Another 3-2 delivery, swung on... and missed!!

Balzac 6, London 3

The Balzac Ticklers are the 1963 Continental League Champions!

The Classic will run in a few hours. I have to run the FOOL sim, and then go pick up my daughters for July 4th weekend. I estimate roughly 10am - noon time frame depending on traffic.

The pitching sure took today off as Balzac has a 7 run 2nd inning on 5 hits, including a bases loaded triple and three walks, including one with the bases loaded.

After Balzac had a 12-2 lead, Virginia Beach started a mini-comeback, but still ended 5 runs short.

Denny Wills went 2 for 5 with a Triple, a Home Run and 5 RBI for Balzac while Aoshima goes 3 for 5 with three doubles and 5 RBI for Virginia Beach.

Balzac starts where they left off, with an Acevedo RBI single in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead. Virginia Beach however finishes things this time around thanks to an Orlando Garcia Solo homer in the bottom of the inning and a Davey Holloway 3-run homer in the 4th.

Virginia Beach score 2 more in the 5th and another in the 6th to run away with this one.

Garcia ends up hitting 2 for 4 with a double a homer and 2 RBI for Virginia Beach in the win.

Virginia Beach 7, Balzac 2

The FOOL-X Classic is tied up at one game each.

Davey Holloway hits a solo Home run in the top of the second for Virginia Beach to give them a 1-0 lead. Balzac erases that lead however in the bottom of the third when Pepin walks two in the inning, including Sergio Acevedo with the bases loaded to bring in the tying run and even the teams up at one each.

Balzac jumps ahead of them in the bottom of the 5th on another Acevedo RBI, this time a Sacrifice fly to center field that gives the TIcklers a 2-1 lead. They score one more insurance run in the bottom of the 8th on a Miguel Guzman RBI double that extends the Balzac lead to 3-1 entering the ninth inning.

Balzac closer Dale Robinson enters to pitch the ninth, but he gets into immediate trouble, giving up a single to Orlando Garcia and a walk to Danny Barry before getting the first out of the inning. Robinson quickly gets a second out on a Thurman ground ball, but both runners advance a base.

Hank Lee comes up to bat with runners on second and third and two out, the Surf trailing 3-1... He works a 3-1 count.. the pitch... he takes it.. outside for a walk!

That loads the bases for Aoshima.. and you couldn't script this any better for Virginia Beach.. the second pitch he sees, he sends on a line hard to left field.. that ball really is carrying... and there it goes, just barely over the wall.. but it still counts! a GRAND SLAM HOME RUN!! Just like that, Virginia Beach takes the lead 5-3. That will also be all for the Balzac closer as they bring in Christian Simmons to try to get the last out of the inning.

The first batter that Simmons faces is Cunningham, and he gives up a double to him... then a single to Cardenas that brings home another run. 6-3 now, the lead.

Ramos follows with a single of his own, but finally Balzac gets the last out of the inning on a popup by Orlando Garcia, the second time he batted in the inning.

Virginia beach now has their turn to bring in the closer, Wyatt Loder.

Loder gives up a weakly hit ball to Wills that he manages to beat the throw on for a single. Marrero follows by flying out to right field and then Reyes hits into the game ended doubleplay.

Virginia Beach seals the 9th inning come back and wins this one!

Virginia Beach 6, Balzac 3

Virginia Beach leads the series 2 games to 1.

Virginia Beach starts this one out with 2 in the top of the second, on RBIs from Thurman and Aoshima. They score another run in the 4th on year another Aoshima RBI single.

Balzac gets one of the runs back in the 5th, but Virginia Beach runs away with it in the top of the 6th, thanks to a Van Den Berg Solo homer, a Holloway RBI triple and another Aoshima RBI that makes the score 6-1.

The Surf offense is just too strong for Balzac to handle once again.

First baseman Bruce Thurman goes 4 for 4 with 3 doubles for Virginia Beach in the win as well.

Virginia Beach 7, Balzac 2

Virginia Beach leads the series 3 games to 1.

Virginia Beach starts off the scoring in the top of the third when Mauro Ramos bangs a triple to right field that scores one. He then comes home on the next hitter thanks to a ground ball out. The Surf take the early 2-0 lead.

Balzac ties it back up in the 4th on a Pedro Cortez two-run homer, but Virginia Beach starts to run away with it again in the top of the next inning....

Ramos hits an RBI single and then later in the inning van den Berg crushes a 420 foot 3-run Home Run that puts the Surf up 6-2.

Balzac doesn't give up in this one, they respond in the bottom of the 5th scoring two runs on only one hit and a walk to cut the lead down to 6-4.

Virginia Beach just keeps on scoring though, in the top of the 7th two singles, a double, two walks and a bases loaded error help the Surf score three more runs for a seemingly insurmountable 9-4 lead.

Thanks to the long ball, Balzac ships away at the lead. Solo home runs from Guzman and Wills in the 7th and a 2-run Homer by Reed in the 8th put them within 1 once again, the score entering the 9th is 9-8 Virginia Beach.

The Surf threaten to score more in the top of the 9th, but Robinson gets out of a no-out jam to get the Ticklers to the bottom of the inning where they face once again the Virginia Beach closer Wyatt Loder.

Loder is on his stuff once again, he gets Marrero to ground out, then strikes out Reyes and retires Acevedo on a fly out to end the game.

Virginia Beach 9, Balzac 8

Virginia Beach leads the series 4 games to 1.

Despite Young's poor showing so far this postseason, he pitches good enough in this one. He pitches into the 8th inning, and gives up 7 hits and 6 walks, but only 2 runs cross the plate against him. He leaves the game with a 3-1 lead in the 8th for Virginia Beach..

Virginia Beach brings in Robby Hammond to pitch in the 8th for him, after young start off the inning with a walk to Victor Ortiz. Hammond pours gasoline on the fire however, as a passed ball allows Ortiz to reach second. Then Esquivel lines one past third which lets him score to make the game 3-2 Virginia Beach lead.

Reed bunts the runner over to second in time for Guzman to line a pitch to right field and score another run. That ties up the game 3-3 in the top of the 8th for Balzac!!

Wills strikes out and then Marrero flys out to end the inning, but they have at least tied it up!

The Surf get two hits in the bottom of the inning, but can not get anyone to cross the plate. Then in the 9th, Pedro Cortez hits a 444 foot solo shot to give Ticklers the lead in the 9th inning!!

Virginia Beach enters the bottom of the 9th, trailing by one. Two runs will give them the FOOL-X championship here. They will once again face the Balzac closer Dale RObinson.

Hank Lee leads things off with a single to start off the inning and is instantly pinch run for by Juan Bernal.

Lucio Cardenas steps up to the plate and will be a pinch hitter. He squares up to bunt, but he pops it up.. what a lousy bunt! THe catcher lunges for it and makes the catch for the first out!

Mauro Ramos, the next hitter strikes out swinging for the second out and the last chance for Virginia Beach here.

Orlando Garcia is not ready to give up yet, he lines a shot over short stop for a single, that puts the winning run at first, the tying run at second for Danny Barry!

Barry this season hit .356 with 41 HR and 146 RBI. With runners in scoring position he hit .371 and had an OPS of 1.004! This is his chance to once again be the hero for Virginia Beach...

Robinson gets a quick lead in the count.. the 1-2 pitch swung on... hit hard.... right at the second baseman.. the throw over to first, and that will do it. Balzac hangs on to win this one!

Balzac 4, Virginia beach 3

Virginia Beach leads the series 4 games to 2.

FOOL-X Classic game 7:

Jorge Lopez pitches for Balzac (0-2 11.37 ERA this postseason)
vs
Wan-fang Zhao for Virginia Beach (1-0 1.64 ERA this postseason)

A seemingly possible mismatch of epic proportions here have Balzac pitch their 5th starter vs the two time all Star Zhao for Virginia Beach in another must-win game for Balzac. We will see if this strategy pays off for the Ticklers as a win here will have their top two starters ready for a possible game 8 and 9..

The "strategy" somewhat flew out the window in the bottom of the first when Barry hits an RBI double to score one, but then later in the inning Halloway hits a bases loaded Triple that brings in several more. After all is said and done, Virginia Beach gets 5 runs on 4 hits and a hit-batter to take an early commanding lead.

Balzac begins to chip away at the lead in the top of the second as Acevedo scores on a fielder's choice that cuts the score to 5-1, but the Surf keep on scoring, this time a Bruce Thurman 2-run homer in the bottom of the third that makes it a 7-1 game.

The Surf add another insurance run in the 5th and 2 more in the 8th to seal the Balzac fate.

Holloway ends up hitting 3 for 4 with two triples and three RBI in the Virginia Beach win, while Zhao pitches 6.1 innings, and gives up only 1 run on 2 hits!

Virginia beach 10, Balzac 2

Virginia beach Surf are the 1963 FOOL-X Champions!!

Damn, so close. Game 3 was a heartbreaker, losing a 3-1 lead in the 9th, but I'm happy to have pulled off the upset over London again

The new league file is up! HTML will be updated shortly as well as Statslab.

We are off for the weekend, make sure to do your arbitration cases and set your draft list for Monday morning's sim!

I will also be posting a vote regarding possibly moving the draft to a different part of year and some of the reasons for doing it as well as some of the complications that come up from doing so.

I hope all of our Canadian friends had a great Canada day, and I wish the rest of you a great 4th of July!

Hey, it's THE Balzac Ticklers. When you say it like Tasan did it just makes us sound like a bunch of preverts!

Didn't want to start a new thread just for this, but I have this bum SP on my roster makin 8mil, he's old and has declined. If I release him am I still on the hook for his salary? Does it just cost me from a money standpoint or does it count against my cap? I want to cut him but if I have to pay him under my cap I may as well keep him and let him rot.

It won't count against your cap next year, but it will come out of your money pool.
