Obama Goes Mr. Miyagi; PETA Miffed

Quote:
The president has been getting lots of kudos for a lightning-fast, Mr. Miyagi-worthy swipe he employed to slay a pesky house fly that was buzzing him in mid-interview during a taping with CNBC that aired Wednesday.

But now People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, calling it an "execution," wants the commander-in-chief to show a little more compassion to even "the least sympathetic animals."

Yep. They called this on the morning radio yesterday.

"Just you wait. SOMEONE, probably PETA, will complain."

It seems we were right to think our Commander-in-Chief had been learning a trick or two from this fella.

I don't have the link, but they're also pissed at the guys who toss the fish around at Pike Place Market in Seattle.

Saw him nail that fly. Impressive.

Dear PETA. Flies aren't animals.

Do these folks not drive cars? Because if so, they are part of a bug genocide.

Yeah, I didn't realize PETA had become Jainists.

But PETA is pretty much predictable, anything for publicity. Obama snatching flies out of the air, that might even be better than Bush dodging that shoe.

Nah.

Nah.

Yeah, saw what you will about Dubya, and I know I do, but the ninja shoe dodging was a pretty impressive feat of unexpected agility.

PETA may have started off with good intentions, but they've been way off the deep end for a while now. And yeah, they like doing this kind of stuff because of the publicity, regardless of how ridiculous their positions may sound.

And I blame them for turning my fiance vegetarian after she volunteered for a while at one of their shelters...

PETA has done a lot of good for animal rights and there still is an arm of the organization that does really good things.

The problem, however, is the radical element. That element is the by far the most vocal and is constantly pulling stunts that set back the organizations goals. They essentially give people an easy "out" for discrediting any positions they don't readily agree with.

PETA and Palin are both way craftier than you guys give them credit for. Both of the threads about them are going to go way over a hundred posts. (I admit being completely fooled when I started a thread about the Joe Buck Show that is looking more and more like a massive publicity stunt)

PETA has zero credibility and usually I ignore everything that they do because, like panerd said, it gives them some sort of publicity that they do not even in the remotest of remotes, deserve.

And with that, it is lunch time. I think I'll have a burger.

But here's what I don't get about the "any publicity is good publicity" strategy, at least as far as PETA is concerned - I'm sympathetic to the basic idea they have, which is preventing cruelty to animals. Obviously we differ in what we consider "cruelty", but I could live with that to a certain extent if I wasn't confronted so often with examples of extremist views on their part of what constitutes animal cruelty.

Swatting a fly? Tossing dead fish for the entertainment of tourists?

It just makes them look stupid, and the sympathy that I might otherwise have for them goes out the window.

It is shitty when groups that can and have done good let their radical elements take over. They lose credibility and hurt the overall cause.

But see you're assuming there's anyone there capable of stringing together consecutive rational thoughts. Once you realize that isn't the case, suddenly their strategy makes a lot more sense.

The problem with these groups is that if you have that much time to dedicate yourself to it, you're probably not normal. A normal person has a job, family, and other hobbies. Sure they may dedicate a little time to a cause here and there, but they don't put their lives into it. So you end up with groups that can only get crazies to run them.

I suppose what happens is the most fanatical elements in these movements are the ones most dedicated and thus are the ones that end up running things.

Rational animal rights people probably end up with the Humane Society.

Actually, Mr. Miyagi never caught the fly. He kept trying, and then Daniel sat down and caught one after a few seconds, pissing Mr. Miyagi off.

LMAO, just heard a parody commercial on the radio for PETA (some mumbled division I didn't catch)

"What's next Mister President? You're going to throw a dwarf ... or midget, or little person, or whatever they like to be called ... into the engine of Air Force One until it's all chunky & red like salsa? Then dip a tortilla chip into it? You heartless bastard"
