OOTP5: Replaying Baseball History - The first 100 years: 1903-2002

This is a continuation of the dynasty I have started under this thread: 1903-1907

I’d like to get to the present day sooner rather than later so I’m going to try and get through the seasons faster by quick simming through each year. Generally, what I will do is report at the end of each decade with the World Series winners, MVPs, Cy Youngs, and ROYs. Then report any milestones (3000 hits, 30 wins, etc.) and list the career leaders at that point followed by the performances of each team throughout the decade.

To add a new twist, beginning in the 25th year of the replay, 1928, I’ll induct 3 players into the Hall of Fame each year at the All-Star break. I’ve set the automatic induction settings to out of reach levels so I’ll use my own criteria to choose the HOFers. If there is enough interest I may put it up for vote on the board. This way I won’t be just rattling off lists that I copied from in game reports and I can add a little personality to the dynasty.

Once I reach 2003, I’ll turn on manager mode and pick a team to play with and things will slow down considerably and I’ll go into as much detail, if not more, as I did with the 1903 Browns.1903-1907

The Browns maintained a top notch pitching staff throughout these 7 years, helping them to 3 World Series appearances and 2 World Championships. Ed Walsh and Barney Pelty formed arguably the top pitching duo in the majors in the late 00s while Elmer Flick and Davy Jones provided the offense.

2. New York Highlanders (1903-1909) 578-501, .536

The Highlanders finished in the top half of the standings in 6 of the 7 years and won both World Series that they competed in. They featured 2 MVPs in Tim Jordan and Wid Conroy as well as solid players in Spike Shannon and Willie Keeler. Barney Wolfe was a rock on the mound but they inexplicably shipped him to the A’s in 1907 though they dealt for a solid replacement in Frank Smith from Brooklyn.

3. Cleveland Naps (1903-1909) 571-507, .530

The Naps made it to the World Series in Year 1, losing to the Pirates but could never get back, finishing 2nd twice. Despite having top hitters Nap Lajoie and Charlie Hickman, their offense was generally anemic. Addie Joss was spectacular on the mound but due to a general lack of run support, his record was not as stellar as it could have been. Red Ames was acquired late in the decade and he could lead the Naps back to prominence in the teens.

4. Philadelphia Athletics (1903-1909) 524-554, .486

The A’s were pretty much a team under constant construction as players came and went. The only guy of any prominence to stick around was Topsy Hartsel. They also featured perhaps the top all-around catcher in Ossee Schreckengost. Same thing goes for the pitching staff as Rube Waddell, Hooks Wiltse, and Frank Corridon all made their mark but none were good enough to push the A’s over the top.

5. Chicago White Sox (1903-1909) 524-555, .486

With the exception of 1905 when they finished a game out of 1st, the Sox lingered in the bottom half of the standings. Their forte has been pitching as Doc White pitched to the top ERA of the decade and Roy Patterson won a Cy Young before signing as a free agent with the Pilgrims. Their Achilles heel has been at the plate as they have finished towards the bottom of most of the offensive standings. It didn’t help that they let offensive standouts Danny Green and Harry Lumley walk in free agency.

6. Boston Pilgrims (1903-1909) 516-562, .479

The Pilgrims finished second in their first year but it was downhill from there, bottoming out by finishing dead last in 2 of the last 3 seasons. Buck Freeman won the first 2 AL MVP awards and remained their top offensive threat for a few years before retiring in 1909. Jake Stahl and Joe Ward have carried the torch from there. George Winter was their top pitcher through the middle years and they also signed former Cy Young winners Roy Patterson and Noodles Hahn but it didn’t help their cause any.

7. Detroit Tigers (1903-1909) 512-566, .475

The Tigers started out well and won the World Series in 1904 over Brooklyn but from there spiraled downward finished no higher than 6th the rest of the way. Sam Crawford led the team in the 03-04 years but was traded to the A’s and the Tigers were awful after that with no hitter even reaching the .300 mark in a single year. They also lacked consistency on the mound with Rube Kisinger and Carl Lundgren standing out.

The Giants were a model of consistency after a sub-par 1903, finishing in the top 3 the last 6 seasons. Most of their success can be attributed to their productive trio of Frank Chance, Roger Bresnahan, and RBI machine Sam Mertes. Their pitching basically held them back from winning more championships. They let Christy Mathewson leave for the Cardinals in his prime and never really found a replacement for him. That could have been Red Ames but he bolted for Cleveland.

3. Pittsburgh Pirates (1903-1909) 575-503, .533

The Pirates took their fans on a roller coaster ride over these 7 years, going to 3 World Series, winning 2, but also following those up with comparatively bad years. The Bucs featured the top 1-2 hitting duo in the league in SS Honus Wagner and OF Ginger Beaumont, both have Hall of Fame aspirations. Pitching was another story, they saw Phillippe, Leever, Falkenberg, Thielman, and Pfiester come and go and had aging vet Sudhoff carrying the load at the end of the decade.

4. Cincinnati Reds (1903-1909) 560-518, .519

The Reds were always a team that I thought should be better than they were. They had undoubtedly the best position player of the decade in Mike Donlin, who batted .352 over these 7 years. A Reds player won the MVP 6 out of 7 years (Donlin 3, Danny Green 2, John Anderson 1) but they only made the Series once. Hahn, Reulbach, and Currie were the stars on the mound with Hahn and Currie each winning a Cy Young.

5. St. Louis Cardinals (1903-1909) 543-535, .504

The Cards were as average as you can get, finishing no higher than 3rd and no lower than 6th. They never really had a position player of note. They did manage to sign the great Christy Mathewson but he didn’t reach the level that he had with the Giants, though he didn’t have that offense either. Tully Sparks was actually just as good as Mathewson if not better and they did manage to squirrel a young Walter Johnson from the Cubs.

6. Brooklyn Superbas (1903-1909) 504-574, .468

The Superbas had 1 great season out of 7, making the World Series in ’04. Things fell apart after that as Sheckard left for Philly and pitcher Oscar Jones suffered a career ending injury while Frank Smith was dealt to the Highlanders. Miller Huggins has been their top star since the Series appearance while young pitcher Bill Burns appears destined for stardom.

7. Boston Beaneaters (1903-1906)

Boston sucked as the Beaneaters but cam out of nowhere as the Doves to make a trip to the Series in ’09. losing to the Browns. Pitcher Nap Rucker was the key to the turnaround as he won a league record 32 games in 1909. Their offense has generally been a collection of unsung types with George Stovall being the main guy that stuck through the tough early years.
