When(what) to eat carbs for energy?

I have a nice long run to do Saturday morning, it's probably gonna kick off around 8 am, I'm wondering if anyone know how this whole carb thing works, because I have no clue. Is there a certain time the night before I wanna load up on certain carbs, or do I want to do it that morning? If so, what kind?

there should be websites that tell you that sort of thing. check for example the boston marathon site - i know they have a whole bit on training and carbo-loading for it.

I usually carb load the night before a long run the next day. For example, for my half marathon on May 10 I went out for dinner the night before and carb loaded. Pasta, beer the whole deal. Then for breakfast something light like toast, maybe scrambled eggs...nothing greasy. And hydrate yourself before you run too.

Isn't it bad to eat eggs and dairy products within a couple hours of a race?

I usually load up the night before - pasta.

Thats my plan. Gonna do that and stick with my oatmeal and english muffin breakfast, might get a little crazy and add a bagel in there too.

I had a 32 mile bike ride this weekend and I made steel cut oatmeal in the crockpot so I could just wake up and eat it. It was pretty awesome.

You can do tons of reading on this, but my opinion is that overall diet matters more than carb loading the night before a race or run. I also subscribe to the Nothing New Theory. If you don't generally eat pasta or drink beer and then try to load up for the first time before a big event, you really don't know how it is going to make you feel. Same is true, but even more so on the morning of the run.
