MLB: Pitcher Suspensions

Something I have wondered... Do they increase pitcher suspension lengths so they actually miss a few games, or do they suspend a pitcher for 5 games the same as they would a player who plays every game? As I see it, if you lose your LF for 5 games it can hurt. Your ace pitcher? His next start is moved back 1 game.

Most suspensions with starting pitchers do seem to be at least five games for that reason, although they sometimes get reduced (and thus become irrelevant).

Relievers, for obvious reasons, can hurt a team by their absence with shorter suspensions.

Agreed that its not much of a suspension. Should be something where the starter is suspended for 9 games but loses 5 game checks.

I've wondered the same thing in the past...and haven't really found any real policy or rule on it (not that I've honestly looked very hard).

You would think it would be taken into consideration when dishing out suspensions, namely when dealing with beanball fights (i.e. pitcher gets 10-15 days and batter gets 2-3 days).

The minimum you'll ever see a legitimate starting pitcher suspension is 5 games.

We were talking about this at work yesterday too - I imagine Foo is right in that a starter probably always gets at least 5 for something like that, since then he is pretty much guaranteed to miss at least one start.

Earlier in the year Josh Beckett got suspended for five or six games, and everything I read about it said that it was so he actually missed a start.
