Watching CNBC. Not seeing it linked anywhere yet. Darren Revel quoted NBC sources and had a press release.

It's already on his wiki page.

John Madden (football - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

"On April 16, 2009, NBC Sports announced Madden was retiring from broadcasting."

Forever, why would they changed the name when everyone has known it as Madden?

Who's with Michaels next year then? Collinsworth? Is he under contract to NFL Network?

Good riddance to bad Faider garbage. He's been horrible at his job for the last decade or more. And he's always good to make sure to snark the Steelers at least once or twice per game.

Anyways, I believe this was not unexpected. There had been talk that the Super Bowl would be his last segment of torture around the time it aired.

+1

Even though he never said anything all that inspiring, he was a lot better than some of the junk out there now (see: Tony Kornheiser as "color analyst" on MNF)

I wonder if NBC would be interested in stealing him.

Things I like about Madden as a commentator:

1. You can tell he really loves the game. He's not a journalist or comedian trying to be a color commentator.

2. He doesn't hide his biases (i.e. he likes the line guys more than the skill guys).

3. He's not interested in non-football discussion during the game (note how he zones out when Michaels has to entertain a "special guest".

I still liked him, mainly because I (and I think most of us here) know enough about football that we didn't need him to explain the rules or breakdown the last play. And for the "other stuff," I'd gladly listen to him over the Tony Kornheiser's of the sports world any day.

Yeah -- his obvious love for the game and his enthusiasm go a long way with me.

Absolutely agreed on all of this. I'll miss him as well, although I also like Billick.

If he ever decided to actually watch the game he was broadcasting, I might have liked him more. He made way too many comments that did not match what was actually happening on the field for me to have much respect for him as a commentator.

I like John Madden and I will miss him.

My wife loves to hear him talk because he puts her right to sleep for some reason. When he was with Summeral, she was asleep before the 1st quarter was half over,

I would not be surprised if he comes back to the Raiders in some type of consultant capacity. There were rumors last year that he would.
